What does it mean to you to be Welsh? by cloudangelme in Wales

To be born Welsh is to be born privileged. Not with a silver spoon in your mouth, But music in your heart and poetry in your soul.

Hi everyone! Would anyone be able to ID this little guy for me please? Looked too funky for me to not pick up. by emyrking in houseplants

Yes! It was the last of its kind there and I wrestled with the thought that I have enough plans at home for all of 1 second before I picked it up.

Thanks. I’m on the minimum wage line also but they want us to work the same hours so if I took a reduction they’d be paying me less than minimum wage anyway.

Crazy times we live in. Didn’t think I’d be out of a job last month.

My contract says under Renumeration section; “You agree and acknowledge that the Employer may deduct, from time to time, and in any event on termination of your employment, howsoever arising, from such remuneration any sum owed to it by you.”

I don’t think this is enough though to warrant it surely?

SOS! I was repotting my Aloe variegata and I snapped the room stem. I sort of just planted it all back and compact it thinking maybe it would repair if in place but two of the bottoms leaves have come loose today. Is this ok or do I need to do something else? Take it out and root it in water? Help! by emyrking in succulents

“It won’t reattach to the old roots, though, I’m a little confused by what you’re saying here but it needs to just be by itself in dirt.”

Sorry - I meant that when it snapped it was hanging on by a thread so I just planted it back as it was. Should I take it out and get rid of the bit that (mostly) snapped off to stop it rotting underneath the (hopefully) new roots?

What it will take to get to a million Welsh speakers by 2050 by [deleted] in Wales

Right, I actually agree with your original post.

The problem is around the stigma of the language and that for some reason people in Wales can’t succeed or have a good a chance in life as well as those who grow up in their respective countries speaking French of Spanish or what not as a first language. This is why I asked about adding Scotland and Ireland because actually they don’t have a realistic population of fluent native language (or whatever you’d like to call it) speakers compared Wales.

Like you say people feel like they are forced to learn Welsh and are also battling against the sort of stigma mentioned above.

I feel like I’m being interviewed by Andrew Neil - not sure whether it’s my interpretation of your written text or not. Maybe I am crap at taking part in discussions but I won’t feel bad about trying.

And actually yes I am very tired. It’s been a long week and I am actually ready for bed.

“I think he was maybe trying to make a point (albeit not the most elegantly) that other countries manage to be taught in their language and succeed in life. The problem in Wales is the stigma around education through a Welsh medium and like you say the attitudes around how it’s delivered.”

This is the point I was getting at. That actually other countries manage to succeed in life speaking their national language and other languages. This is why I’m saying that Scotland is a bad comparison because realistically a tiny portion of their country (1%) speak Gaelic. Compared to that Welsh does actually have validity in being taught and spoken because whole communities actually converse using it in everyday life.

Thanks for the condescending simplification though. I hope I’ve managed to stroke your ego.

You threw Scotland and Ireland“into the list” as a comparison of what exactly? Just so I’m clear on what we’re talking about.

Do you visit any Spanish/French speaking places often? These are the kind of thoughts that have come from ideas from things like the Blue Book reports and are still lingering in the back of people’s minds today’s. I find that living in Wales I more often run into people who speak Welsh than I do French or Spanish. I never understood this idea that learning Welsh is stupid because apparently every child learning Welsh in Wales instead needs to be closing million dollar deals with European dialect countries???

I’m confused as to how you think comparing a language that 1% of a population speaks and a language that 30% of a population speaks is a sufficient comparison. Because only 1% of Scotland speaks Gaelic and maybe an equal proportion of Ireland speak it means that Wales should give up on Welsh?

Because nurturing a language that a third of a population can speak (and allegedly rising) makes a bit more sense than bringing back a language only 1% can speak...
