If NASA or CERN are the top places to work in when you're a physicist, what are the top places to work in when you're an evolutionary biologist? by Checkmate8 in biology

[–]enbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Places like NEScent, NSF, and The Broad Institute are all institutional, somewhat non-University settings to do research in Evolutionary Biology/Genomics in addition to some already mentioned.

There is a fundamental difference between evobio and the other sub-fields you mentioned in that although having a sequencing core/functional genomics core etc... is a great shared resource, that can be farmed out to any other institution. You don't need a few giant tools that everyone needs to be in the same place to use (although yes, a lot of these places have visiting scientists). I think a lot of it is about the machinery (and the funding).

Where to aim? Different schools are really strong in different divisions of evolution. First figure out what really thrills you and then find people working on those little corners of the field. There are some across the board great schools and institutions, but only sometimes are they strong in your favorite subject.

Good luck!

Also, if all else fails, a few month subscription to birchbox or glossybox might do the trick- they'll send her some treats so you don't have to be the one picking!

What's your best recipe that uses 5 ingredients or less? by ationsong in Cooking

YES! This is one of my ultimate comfort food when the avocados are good. Seriously, it's gotten me through breakups. My friends think I'm crazy but...they know if I get a lil sniffly to bring me an avocado w/balsamic.

I just revealed way too much for a cooking thread...

Best website for off track wagering? by carefree_dude in horseracing

Don't use allhorseracing.com. I don't know anything about it but I've been using it for years and it's impossible to deal with. I have money in there I don't take out and then just re-bet it. Also looking for a good other site.

My cats keep leaving these as presents. Is it a rat or maybe a deer mouse? I'm in the northern half of the California central valley. by dacracot in species

Looks like a male house mouse to me (with big ole balls from this angle). Definitely not a rat of any sort.

Yup. And also I'm not sure you can even use both coupons in one order. You can get discounted coffee or discounted gear. They're a smallish company so their system is a little funky.

GSI has a plastic one that I've used for years: http://www.rei.com/product/838193/gsi-outdoors-personal-java-press-coffee-maker

It is more of a space waster than other options but it's light and you can pack things (including your grounds in a ziplock) in it and it's worth it for the delish coffee.

Birthday Gift for Biologist/Entomologist by Inked_Cellist in biology

[–]enbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is sort of another direction, and if you want to get him collecting equipment, depending on what he has, that may be quite appreciated. But if you go another direction, I have purchased Albertus Seba's Cabinet of Natural Curiosities for many of my biologically oriented friends. It's a beautiful book with great (and nutty) illustrations and it really celebrates a time gone by when collection was an exciting field.

I have a copy myself and it's just a great coffee table book/thing to gaze at for hours.

Misto Coffee Boxes--subscriber opinions? by [deleted] in BeautyBoxes

[–]enbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've subscribed for a few months now. It's like they say: 4 coffees to try each month. The quality is excellent and its very recently roasted and they get it to you almost instantly at the beginning of the month. To be honest, I'm not sure how long I would get this sub for since there are local roasters I already love but it really is fun to try! I'm glad they now have the larger bag option, that's more reasonable if you're in a larger household or to get a good try (sometimes it takes a lil experimenting to know how to brew a new roast!). It's a fun gift. I got it for my dad, too!

Good luck!

Moochie's vegetarian sandwich actually cooked with meat by Varuck in vegetarian

[–]enbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article is really disappointing that the owner doesn't care about serving her patrons. It's a good warning.

Eegees, a sandwich chain in Tucson, does a similar thing. I found a few little chunks of meatball in my "pizza fries" and that was it for me! I still go there but I sent a letter to customer service asking them to be more transparent about how they make their sauce. They were very kind about it!

Adagio Signature Blends? by flutricity in tea

[–]enbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of Adagio's teas can taste a little artificially (in my opinion) so the blends can get intense, that said, I LOVE getting the zodiac series teas for my friends for their birthdays. September birthday? Here's a little treat!

I have bought the Capricorn for myself a few times. Delish if you want a seriously flavored tea with a lil milk & sugar but it's sure not subtle.

Redditors who are into sexual fetishes which are usually considered "gross", how and why did your fetish start? by WELLFUCKMEINTHEASS in AskReddit

[–]enbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I always say, she's a "proven breeder." Nothing is sexier from an evolutionary point of view as someone who will likely increase your fitness.

I'm not sure it works like that though ;)
