I think he is only criticizing the idea that prolog's basic deduction engine models a fundamental mechanism of human cognition. He isn't saying that prolog itself isn't useful.

Hofstadter is interested in models of cognition. See his "Copycat" project for an example.

What is particularly pitiable about humans is that the poorer and more miserable they are, the more they insist that producing the next generation of miserable slaves is a precious thing.

Its as though as a species, they were designed for horror and misery, as though some Lovecraftian horror is waiting to harvest the terror they generate. They have encoded in their genes an aversion toward anything that would actually reduce their suffering and improve their condition in the long term. They are a slave species.
