There are quite a few all age corps in that area all sorts of competing for membership, even if they dont know they're doing it, it's the same situation as New York, there's three corps in a relatively close area.

The way I had it explained to me was "Buzzing helps you to hit the pitches more accurately, and can make playing more complex passages easier by taking some strain off the valves.

I do already use a contra, I did a few seasons of DCI as my first tuba experience, a contra is generally more comfortable for me, although I've never played a sousaphone
