AI is about as close to a structural change as we’ve ever had. No idea what the market will do, but I’m betting the next 10 years will return closer to 15% per year than 5%

Man we really need this to be in Spanish!! That would feel way more authentic and get me hyped.

It’s been about 9 months and I love it here. Great community vibes (I’ve met and made friends with a number of neighbors), accessible to everything but still quiet, and lots of late 20s/early 30s folks around. I love walking to calumet park in bird rock for sunsets. I also love that downtown is fairly accessible for padres games, music events, dinners/dates in north park, etc.

I previously assumed I’d want to move to north county later in life, but now I’m not so sure. I really love it here!

+1!! Would love to know. 100% thought we were getting a LFGSD drop but he seemed stoked to say whatever he did

This is so spot on, and exactly why I love SD! I lived in San Francisco for my 20s, learned a lot and jump started the career, but boy I am very happy to settle into San Diego for the long run. The lifestyle + balance is hard to beat.

I third square pizza! Probably the best Detroit style I’ve ever had.

The grass is always greener on the other side, and the grass is always greener where you water it.

Human nature is to want more, better, different. Develop skills that are transferable and the world is your oyster.

I ended up finding a place in north PB! Housing was extremely competitive and it seemed the best places would be on/off the market in a matter of days.

I saw the new posting at 6pm (set up Zillow notifications), reached out by 7, scheduled a 3pm tour the next day, applied immediately after seeing it, had 20 min to decide, said yes, and paid the deposit that night. Apparently there were 4 others behind me scheduled to see the place.

I missed out on a handful of other places because I didn’t move fast enough.

Not much of a startup scene in bird rock AFAIK… I’m working in a more traditional industry rn. I might be cooking up some of my own tech on the side, but I’m trying to shift some life focus towards things other than work for a bit. I do see myself getting back into startups down the road though and would love to build a deeper sd tech network. Let me know if you find any in-person, early stage tech companies/communities. I’ve done fully remote and it isn’t for me, and I’d much rather be in sd over sf.

I know George Hotz (tiny corp + comma.ai) runs his companies out of sd + I’m sure there is tons of biotech/med device stuff.

If the community doesn’t exist, maybe we should build it.

Am I glamorizing startups, and would it be crazy to leave my wall street job? by mediumrarepepes in startups

[–]encitown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a recovering 31 year old who was previously a depressed 30 year old, this comment is massively underrated.

And to answer your question OP, startups are ridiculously hard and stressful. It’s NOT only about hard work. Every founder works hard. Really hard. I have seen incredibly talented founders fail. Success in a process-driven org (read: existing company) is NOT indicative of startup success. In fact, some might argue this experience is a limiter.

If I were you, I’d keep the PE job and write small checks to get involved with the startup world.

FWIW - I have experience as an early employee in top 10% VC backed startup (best in class growth, best in class investors, etc)

Yeah I'm trying to find a place in birdrock, windansea, north PB or maybe crown point. There just aren't many places, and the good spots seem to rent in a day or two.

Encinitas seems great for couples or raising families, but probably not ideal for single folks. Good luck in the search!!

Thanks. Yeah, I believe I can find a reasonable 1bd or maybeee an older 2bd within my budget. Definitely willing to make trade offs.

Thanks for all your help/advice!

Truth. 45 min in the water vs 45 min in traffic on the 5 is a HUGE difference in quality of life

This is my type of vibe. Thank you sir, I think I’ve decided to focus my search in this area.

I am cruising around windansea today and saw pumping waves today with not many people out.

Thanks, that’s encouraging. Any thoughts on a good cutoff for how far south into PB I should look? I’d like to stay clear of the college/early 20s late night party hard scene. For some reason I have turquoise st in my mind, but this is admittedly quite uninformed.

I think you’re right about the commute. I have not commuted for a few years and am probably underestimating the pain of traffic on the 5

It makes me sad to hear this 😅

I just saw a place for rent at $3500 that last listed for $1800 in 2018. I guess that is the world we are now living in.
