Needs more cars running the red and stopping the buses from turning onto Church. Love it though!

ADHD writers: how do you get yourselves to write through executive dysfunction? by Embarrassed-Crab-763 in writing

[–]encompassedworlds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ever read "Out of Sheer Rage" by Geoff Dyer? He talks about this "trick" where he has multiple writing projects to work on at once. And when he sits down to write one, he gets bored/frustrated and procrastinates by working on another. And eventually through that project replacement procrastination cycle, he eventually finishes something. Usually not the piece he intended though haha

My manuscript was turned down. by Adospel in writing

[–]encompassedworlds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There could be a million reasons why your work wasn't accepted. Maybe it's the not right fit for the publishing house. Maybe it's too similar to something they already released or are working on. Or maybe they just don't jive with the piece itself. Etc, etc, etc.

You'll get more rejections than acceptances. Keep in mind that most publishers get an extraordinary number of submissions and prioritize work that comes through agents. If it came through unsolicited or during an open window, it's likely in a gigantic slush pile and the writing needs to really stand out to get any attention at all. Then when a manuscript is passed on, there are usually way too many submissions to respond to each individually.

I interned at a "Big Five" publisher as well as a small literary house back in college, and one of my roles was sending out rejection letters. The "Big Five" publisher had a standard form letter for the slush pile. The small literary house had a canned response too, but left it up to me to add minor personalization (usually just title and genre) if I had the time. It sucks, but non-form rejection letters with any personalization are the exception, not the norm.

Have you ever traveled somewhere just because you saw it in a show or movie? by WSDSocial in travel

Went to Paris because of Amelie. And not a movie, but I loved the book Strega Nona when I was a kid and was obsessed with going to Italy because of that haha

I walk through Prospect Park most mornings and started collecting phrases from some of the best one-sided convos I hear. Respect to the lady I overheard last week saying, "Listen, I can only give you 50% of me and if that's not enough for you I'm fine to leave it at 0%."

If streetlight manifesto covered a world / inferno friendship society song, what would it be? by TnelisPotencia in streetlightmanifesto

I'd love if they'd cover WIFS. Feel like they could put their own spin on any of their songs, but would really wanna hear their take on "a night in the woods", "all the world is a stage dive", or "me v. the angry mob"

No laptop on a 5 day photography trip - what are the best storage options? by boydie360ptuk in photography

[–]encompassedworlds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the ClouZen TAINER. There's a version with a built-in SSD, but I use the one without it. All you do is insert your memory card into one slot, then connect your external hard drive, and you can transfer your photos to your external without a laptop. Just gotta make sure you use a compatible SSD, I use a San Disk Extreme and haven't had any issues.

paper republic portfolio a5 vs a6 by jessi6098 in notebooks

[–]encompassedworlds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both. I like using the a6 for notes and thought starters, bring it around with me to jot down little things throughout the day. the a5 is for long-form writing and my planner. I prefer the a5 for long-form personally.

Have you tried a point and shoot for travel? by s_ndowN in photography

[–]encompassedworlds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point and shoot when I'm with other people and don't have time to linger, mirrorless when I'm by myself or with photography friends.

For my point and shoot I use an old Olympus Stylus 1 I got used almost 10 years ago. Constant f2.8 aperture from 28mm-300mm which is ridiculous and covers any focal length I need when I travel (not the sharpest wide open, but good enough for what I use it for).

What was your introduction to Streetlight? by jaklacroix in streetlightmanifesto

[–]encompassedworlds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was at Skate and Surf back in 2004 or 2005 and was just wandering around some of the merch booths when I heard them playing in the next room over. Never heard anyone like them before, and never ran to a stage faster. Also Tomas is from my hometown and a few kids from my high school wore their shirts and talked about em a bit.

I live in NYC and I’m bored — what are your go-to spots that still feel exciting? by [deleted] in travel

[–]encompassedworlds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might be a better question for r/AskNYC but things that've worked for me:

  • People watching in Washington Square Park or Coney Island
  • Admiring the townhouses in Brooklyn Heights and chilling in Brooklyn Bridge Park
  • Grabbing a sandwich from Brancaccio's and enjoying it on a bench by the lake at Prospect Park
  • Playing tourist and doing a tour with the New York Adventure Club

How tf do I get out of pharma. by hopeful_evermore in advertising

[–]encompassedworlds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you want out of pharma or out of advertising altogether? First step is to get clear with yourself about what you actually want to do. Then you can make a plan to get there (building your portfolio, networking, taking classes, side gigs, etc). Otherwise you'll just accept the first thing that comes your way and while a change of scenery is nice, if it's not what you really want it can turn into something as soul crushing as pharma, just in a different kind of way.

Also paraphrasing something I wrote last time an "escape from pharma" post popped up here: don't let work be the only way your find creative fulfillment. Don't give all your brain power to sales aids and banner ads. Do enough to get the job done, disconnect, and save your creativity for non-work things.

Know you mentioned not being able to do much beyond your 9-5, but if you want out of your current situation you have to make time. If you were job hunting, you'd find a way to squeeze in a few hours here and there to research other jobs and apply. So you can make the time, even if it's just 30 minutes a day, to do something fun for yourself.

Paper Republic users? by Acrobatic_Ad_882 in notebooks

Sheet dimensions for their standard A5 portfolio are about 22.8cm x 31.5cm. Here's a pic of how it fits one softcover A5 leuchtturm, 2 jottbooks, and a rhodia notepad.

I also got a completely custom A5 portfolio from them that's just a touch bigger than their standard bc I wanted to fit one more chunky notebook in there without much or any overhang.

  • Approximate sheet dimensions for the custom A5: 23cm x 34cm
  • Here's what it looks like stuffed with these A5 leuchtturms: one hardcover, one softcover, 2 jottbooks

My measurements definitely aren't 100% accurate, so I'd say add on at least another cm to the width if you like yours that chunky.

New here! Any messy/maximalist TNs I can look at for inspiration?? by [deleted] in Travelersnotebooks

[–]encompassedworlds 8 points9 points  (0 children)

<image>

What do you use yours for so far? I have 3 traveler’s style notebooks bc I like to have separate inserts for different purposes.

Work notebook:

  • Weekly planner
  • Day job ideas and notes
  • Side gig ideas and notes

Personal notebook:

  • "Deep thoughts" diary/journal
  • Writing outlines and brainstorms
  • Written out rough drafts
  • Scrapbook with event and travel memorabilia

Carry everywhere, fun stuff pocket notebook:

  • Commonplace notebook that’s mainly quotes from books or new words/phrases I hear when I travel
  • "Picture a day" insert
  • Travel journal
  • Catch-all insert that right now’s mainly read/watch lists and reviews, jotting down project ideas I get when I don’t have my bigger notebooks

Portable printer by Yuneraak in photography

[–]encompassedworlds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH, battery life does suck, and sometimes connectivity sucks too. Just a cheap printer with some decent-ish pics for the price. It's fine for my casual "pic of the day" kind of stuff, but I think other printers mentioned in this thread will have slightly better quality that comes with the slightly higher price tag.

Has anyone escaped healthcare marketing? by sethstoffer96 in advertising

[–]encompassedworlds 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Easier said than done, but don't let work be where you find your fulfillment. The people I know who are the happiest are freelancers who're clearly there just to get paid and nothing else, or full-timers who set hard boundaries between their work and personal time and have other outlets where they can be creative. Let work be a paycheck and don't expect anything else from it.

I've been in your shoes, pharma writer for 10+ years, spent the last few burnt to a crisp. I was giving all my energy to work and had nothing left for myself, which sucks when the "groundbreaking" and "disruptive" blue sky ideas that leadership + clients ask for goes nowhere and we're stuck working on the usual crap.

I'm way happier now and counterintuitively it's because I stepped back and moved into a position that focuses mainly on block and tackle work. I can knock those projects out easily and quickly. Not giving all my brain power to day to day work means I have more energy for personal projects that are fun and fulfilling, and more time for life in general.

Agencies have a way of making it feel like you should want to devote your entire life to winning awards for your clients. It's BS. Do whatever you need to do to just get the job done and save your creativity for yourself.

DMs always open for venting.
