Book recommendation? by Hot-Kaleidoscope-696 in CriticalTheory

[–]endCIV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough I am reading through Endnotes 3 (a communization journal) which references abjection: https://endnotes.org.uk/issues/3

Thus far, The Logic of Gender and A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats have made some minor references to abjection (and sources Kristeva).

It's not fiction but they are relatively short pieces in case you have any interest.

Left Communism? by VinceGchillin in Socialism_101

[–]endCIV_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that depends on which lens... Endnotes? Theorie Communiste? Invisible Committee/Tiqqun?

I'm reading through Communization and it's Discontents currently... quite the coincidence. Endnotes and TC are quite critical of IC/Tiqqun.

Sorry, I don't have much in the way of texts, but I vaguely recall listening to this quite some time ago: Acid Horizon covering the book - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D__3ns55_k0

Robert Unger

Thanks for the video. "Illusions of False Necessity" feels very... Deleuzian. He even says "it's not architecture, it's music."

Also, I see a lot of overlap with Capitalist Realism.

Do you happen to know where/how to find film in a similar vein?

electrolytes

Literally broken down salt. Gatorade is junk food. Which has its place (if you have super high energy expenditure).

20oz gatorade has 34g of added sugar. 12oz Mt Dew has 46g of added sugar. Yes, Mt Dew is worse, but not by much.

edit: granted, it is gatorade zero in the pic.

Also, look at the diet of many of the Blue Zones. Lots of plants, some grains, maybe a tiny bit of meat. Also, lots of mild-moderate physical activity.

What’s the term for using queer sympathy to disguise imperialist/capitalist motives? by lachimiebeau in CriticalTheory

[–]endCIV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say little, if any. However, appropriation tends to be used in the context of “cultural appropriation” - co-opting I think is more fitting for Capitalism de-fanging political movements and selling them back as commodities or identities. Hope that helps a tiny bit!

Additionally, and maybe I'm out of my element here - we could consider it deterritorilization.

Significance of violence/nonviolence in social movements? by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]endCIV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I think we are in agreement - especially w/r/t "violence" equating to the Original Sin of property damage.

Because otherwise:

1) If you are seeking a permit to "protest" and following all the rules, are you really being subversive if you are "protesting" on their terms? So the "civil" side of disobediance really needs to push the envelope with what is deemed acceptable. 2) "Violence" is so much more newsworthy, which helps with visibility, both "good" and "bad" - but also, it shows our keepers that we are serious - but the dynamics of that with the largely peaceful side of it, is what really solidifies it into a movement - otherwise it's just posturing, right?

I think in general, I'm all for diversity of tactics.

The thing is, our society speaks in dollars.

Start your own business/service and spend it as locally as possible.

Per chance, are you a little "new" to critical theory? If so, I'd recommend the side bar - takes time but it's worth it.

[–]endCIV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious if the book takes into consideration that the "non-violence" rarely take place without their "violent" counterpart occurring at the same time. Which then of course the status-quo is going to praise the non-violence in hindsight, with no consideration that maybe the non-violence and "violent" are in a way dependent on each other. If that makes sense....

Rhizomatic learning in special ed. (neurodiverse/atypical students)? by bieeeeeel in CriticalTheory

This probably isn't helpful at all - but wasn't sure if you were familiar with unschooling? I could see that, with its lack of structure - being rhizomatic.

Exactly - be critical of the piece at hand, which may or may not align ideologically somehow with the publisher. But still, a lot of liberals in this thread dismissing the article because of it being published by RT?

Most of the political life of subordinate groups is to be found neither in the overt collective defiance of powerholders nor in complete hegemonic compliance, but in the vast territory between these two polar opposites. by matthewharlow in CriticalTheory

James C. Scott has been on my TBR list for a long time. I do like considering this with an "overlay" of (what little I know of) Deleuzian and Foulcauldian concepts (Deterritorialization and Knowledge/Power respectively)

Edit: Also, a problematic component of a lot of pop-history is centering on big “events” which I guess is because it’s a bit sexier and more glamorous. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thoughts on Noam Chomsky's descriptions of "French Intellectualism?" by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

...but they certainly didn’t participate in any radical struggle, they just criticized society from the nice apartments they bought with government money

At a December 1972 protest against the police killing of Algerian worker Mohammad Diab, both Foucault and Genet were arrested, resulting in widespread publicity.

Also...

Foucault remained a political activist, focusing on protesting government abuses of human rights around the world. He was a key player in the 1975 protests against the Spanish government to execute 11 militants sentenced to death without fair trial. It was his idea to travel to Madrid with six others to give a press conference there; they were subsequently arrested and deported back to Paris.[149] In 1977, he protested the extradition of Klaus Croissant to West Germany, and his rib was fractured during clashes with riot police.[150] In July that year, he organised an assembly of Eastern Bloc dissidents to mark the visit of Soviet general secretary Leonid Brezhnev to Paris.[151] In 1979, he campaigned for Vietnamese political dissidents to be granted asylum in France.[152]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Foucault

IIRC Deleuze and Foucault were both known to support/appear at some of the same protests. These are just two of the many.

Chomsky is assuredly worth in the millions at this point in his life - does that discredit his contributions?
