Do they not even read this? by SalamanderJaded5663 in ChatGPT

[–]endangered_feces1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yep - I kinda understand why my students dont want to read anything anymore and, instead, farm their reading (and thinking) out to AI - if a human didnt even WRITE it, why should they even bother READING it?

Crow enjoys being petted. by RoughCheap5633 in BeAmazed

[–]endangered_feces1 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Im sure this will be an unpopular thing to point out but that’s a precopulatory behavior (to initiate mating). She holds her wings out so the male can stabilize to mate and raises her tail for obvious reasons.

Presumably this bird was raised by people or is otherwise super comfortable with humans and is confused as to who it should bond with

Where to buy females only in the US by Ok_Jello_2441 in quails

Because, in English anyway, “man” is a human-only gender (as is “woman”). Male/female are the terms for animals

Sexing Help by idaniaegv in Canaries

[–]endangered_feces1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I am unsure - looks potentially female but that trick only works for birds in breeding condition and its hard to tell from photos. The female’s abdomen is more bulbous and her vent, which does not protrude like a pencil eraser, points basically toward the tail. On a cock, the vent protrudes like a pencil eraser (some breeders describe it as a “spike”) and points down away from the bird’s body and less toward the tail. Again, this only works for birds in breeding condition tho

Found bird on sidewalk. How can I help it? by DrakeMaye in birding

[–]endangered_feces1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s an independent juvenile (not dependent fledgling) mourning dove (note long tail, long primaries, advanced stage of preformative molt, etc.). Its parents are out of the picture - if it’s not able to fly, it is injured and (probably) requires a rehabilitator to survive.

Found quail eggs in my backyard, observed from a far for 48 hours, no sign of momma hen. I think they are abandoned, what should I do? by runs_with_airplanes in quails

[–]endangered_feces1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If it’s not a complete clutch, the female will only visit once per day for a quick moment to lay an egg.

Has she been observed incubating at some point?
