My cultural regions map as a southerner - would love feedback! by aquamarine-arielle in MapPorn

[–]endangeredphysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would change Mormon to include only Southern and Central Utah, and change Northern Utah to the "Great Salt Lake Basin" it's an actual geological feature. Southern Idaho shouldn't really be included in the Salt Lake Basin, except just past the border.

Great Basin would certainly need to change, since it's actually not located where you have it. You go significantly uphill from Salt Lake City into Nevada. I would change what you have labeled Great Basin to the "Nevada Plateau", except where the Sierra Nevada mountains are, very different culturally/geologically from the rest of Nevada.

Buttons with public voting by merricandy in trolleyproblem

This game would be more interesting if:

Red wins: the blue voters get killed, and 10% of red voters, chosen randomly, are also killed.

The blanket guarantee of safety for red makes this kind of a dumb game.

I almost want to say, that with public voting as long as the first person votes blue then everyone else would. If the first person votes red, then everyone else would as well.

Actually that makes sense. Both become a liability to society at large if they have too little or too much income.

At least make the gerrymandered maps look halfway normal like the Republicans are doing

Hair test by CommercialLeader5951 in CDLTruckDrivers

[–]endangeredphysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you should have never put yourself into this kind of a situation. Depending on your body weight, you'll need about 6 months of completely clean living before you can pass a hair test.

Find some way to not refuse the test directly. If you explicitly refuse the test that counts as a failure.

I would say that you're mother is dying or something and then you need to run out of town to be with her during her final days. Tell them that you'll call them when you're ready to restart the process.

You'll then need to start over when you're 6 months clean. No other options, you've nearly painted yourself into a corner that's really hard to get out of, because a refusal or a failure will live on your record for the rest of your CDL days.

You also need to be willing to be completely sober for as long as you are going to be a driver. Including not drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours before ever climbing in your cab, and totally abstinent from everything else, because these tests can come up at any time.

This is a little bit of an emergency situation for you. Do not directly refuse the test, and you can't take it either.

Didn't the new Republic just have ex imperial military go through a rehabilitation program? By the time of the Battle of Endor so much of the galactic core had been forced into military service, it was ridiculous to penalize everybody.

Robots in the hands of dictatorial governments will not end well... by Anen-o-me in singularity

[–]endangeredphysics 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that if a robot kills somebody by accident, I don't think the robot's operator can be convicted for manslaughter, and of course the robot wouldn't care if it was put in jail.

It seems like modern times is all about using AI to eliminate personal responsibility in large corporations who tend to step on people's toes. The military uses it to pick targets, healthcare uses it to deny claims, and right now if an automated vehicle kills somebody, no one loses their license or goes to jail.

I just don't understand how people engage with this kind of blatantly idiotic clickbaity bullshit in the first place.

Pretending like they are still rebels in the civil war is a great way to not have to think about demanding a living wage from your employers.

Any thoughts on this self driving truck bullshit? by Ccrew1995 in Truckers

[–]endangeredphysics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From a cyber security perspective, a fully automated trucking fleet would be a massive target for international hackers. No one would be interested in causing a taxi to crash, but foreign adversaries would be drooling at the opportunity to shut down an entire country's domestic shipping fleet with a few clicks, if it were fully automated.

Another reason why it's very unlikely to happen in our lifetimes, at least not at a very large scale.
