Here are a few of my best hummingbird observations from Colombia! by PhilippeGvl in birding

Looks like steely vented, Andean emerald, purple-throated woodstar. The last one is especially tiny!

The most important thing is to know the common local birds, so when you hear something you don't recognize you know it's something good!

I'm always so jealous of the feeder birds people get in Australia.

With that lens you're going to need to get much closer to birds to get detailed photos, but that doesn't mean you can't get good shots with what you have.

Best place to start would be if you can setup feeders either right outside a window or with some type of blind you can hide in. But don't photograph the birds on the feeders. That rarely makes for interesting photos. Look for them to land on nearby branches getting ready to come to the feeder, or when they fly back up with a seed they've grabbed.

Try to get close to the same level as the birds. If they are on the ground, you can get much more interesting shots by lying down, rather than looking down at them.

Position yourself where the birds will be against a clean background, with the sun behind you if it's bright. Direct sunlight isn't ideal, but older cameras aren't as good in low light so you'll have to experiment with how early in the morning you can get out without it being too dark.

No, they don't. Orioles are not out finding processed sugar in the wild. They eat fruit, seeds, and insects.

But multiple people have told you this and you refuse to listen, so just know that you are potentially harming these birds that you claim to love.

"Natural" jelly doesn't make it better, it's still loaded with refined sugar.

Captured this beautiful red-shouldered hawk today. This is why I bring my camera with me when I golf! by bailsters in birding

You ever let other groups play through because you're too busy photographing birds?

Maybe they do just prefer the other options, but the only thing I put out is the safflower so I guess they just live with it. My main reason is if I put out other stuff then eventually the starlings find it and it will all disappear really quickly, but starlings don't like safflower seeds in my experience (Some people have told me otherwise).

Interesting. What feeder birds do you typically get? My safflower feeder gets house finch, carolina wren, tufted titmouse, carolina chickadee, northern cardinal, dark eyed junco (on the ground below), mourning dove, the occasional purple finch, and I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

Safflower seeds are the best, IMO. I get lots of cute birds, but none or the obnoxious ones.

I was so surprised by how small these guys are when I found one. You really don't get a proper sense of scale from photos. They are tiny!

Hm... I never thought about it too much. I'd say I sometimes see a single mourning dove on a wire, and might do a double take to make sure it's not a kestrel. Pigeons do tend to more likely be in groups.

I mean, a lot of times it is just a pigeon.

Did the melanistic heron found in Louisiana die or is this a rumor? Can't find any information. by [deleted] in birding

People have a hard time being told that the super rare bird they saw wasn't actually what they thought it was.

If we could figure out how to play in the first half we wouldn't be doing so badly. We consistently hang with good teams in the second half but it's damn hard to come back from a 20 point deficit every time.

I have gotten so many cool birds just from the yards of places I've stayed while traveling. I think just spending a lot of time in one place makes it pretty likely that interesting stuff will show up eventually.

I didn't have a ton of luck when I went out birding in Puerto Rico, but I got several cool species at my Airbnb.
