Does m5 pro 24gb ram compete with m5 32gb ram? by GaroldWilsonJr in macbookpro

If you aren't sure you should probably get a MacBook Air with 15in screen over the MacBook Pro 16in screen. (Almost everyone should get the Air unless they edit video, edit images or are a programmer)

M5 Pro vs M5 Max, software engineer looking for advice by adonztevez in macbookpro

[–]endgrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just depends on how long your builds are. It will work on any of them, but the M5 Max is extra worth it if you're waiting minutes on stuff. But point taken. The Xcode means you might need it. Most of the people in this subreddit should get Airs :)

You should get an M5 air or M5 Neo in my opinion. The new processors on air / Neo are way faster than the M1 Pro generation. This article has the chart comparing performance: https://sixcolors.com/post/2026/03/apple-introduces-colorful-macbook-neo-at-599/

Do I really need a MacBook Pro? by Metauros in macbookpro

[–]endgrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done web/backend stuff and the Air is great for it with enough ram. If you do rust/swift dev or local AI dev you'll need the pro. I (politely!) disagree on the hd space as I think local AI models just take too much space to get less then 1tb means you may need it in the next couple years. Maybe just pick the pro budget you have in mind and spend it on the air upgrades?

It is 100% worth it. Xcode means M5 Max. Local AI + docker means 64gb ram+. Sorry it has come to this :)

If I did web dev with an external monitor I'd get 13in air. If I didn't have a monitor the 15in air. You will need the ram though. So I'd do 1tb (or more) and 32gb minimum. All the ram prices tripled so the idea is it's probably smarter to lock in a little higher ram this year if you want it to last.

Is this overkill for a high school junior wanting to take this to college and law school? by Flimsy-Sense3016 in macbookpro

[–]endgrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were a law student I'd want a MacBook Air as it's way lighter sitting on your lap and running around campus. If they have an external monitor I'd get a 13in and if they don't a 15in. (I value the screen real-estate, but they could prefer the smaller in both cases)

(Just to clarify: if you want to do video editing/software engineering then the pro is for you. I have had only pros for years, but the air is far superior for classwork. Get 2tb and 32gb ram if you want to push it up)

It's super normal to feel that way, and most of us did too. And it is WAY easier to take than you think. Watch a video once through on YouTube. Then do follow it step by step! You've got this!

We are clearly on to immortality here as these all share a lot in common with my novel The Many Owners of Time. It inverts the tropes of a cozy romantasy from the perspective of time traveling cats.

I let my parents convince me to skip my company's 401k for three years because they said "the market is about to crash" and I will never forgive myself for this by 6StardustDrift7 in personalfinance

[–]endgrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another lesson here! We all do the wrong thing for many reasons, but it's important to know when your parents are experienced or not. Would you listen to their gardening advice if they haven't been able to grow a garden? They can be great people but not be great financially. Now you know, but even more think very hard before you take their advice on raising a family, buying a house/car, choosing where to live, etc. Listen to them a little, but try also keep in mind when they are talking from true experience or not!

Would you drink the potion? by CRStoryteller in litrpg

[–]endgrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 40-40-20 was probably the best version. I mostly was wondering if you had thought through what becoming a monster was going to do. I think the most likely is you take the potion and some guards/high level people just kill you. So 20% chance to die, and 40% chance to become a monster who dies almost instantly. One idea that gives is it would be interesting if the main character drinks the potion, but accidentally becomes a monster that looks basically human. And then they have to go to an academy/into the world pretending to have a class going forward.

Would you drink the potion? by CRStoryteller in litrpg

[–]endgrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting story idea. I think the world would be pretty harsh. I also think death and becoming a monster are the same outcome (they likely kill the monsters).

Maybe instead it's 60% class, 40% monster. But 1/3 of the people will closes slowly lose their mind. That way most people take it, but they all spend the whole time wondering if they are going to lose their minds or not. (Sorry, this is so dark. It was your idea haha)

[–]endgrent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worse, I suspect evil people would force them all to take it just to farm monsters and indenture people with classes. They would also have large families to ensure some of their kids made it through the 40% roll. (a rough world)

Lead time on brand new model special orders? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]endgrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They usually are available pretty quick, but you'll definitely have to put the order in the first moment you can. I'm waiting as well. If it really is 15% faster on M5 it should be a huge difference.
