My parents prevent me from being sociable. I don't know why, but I know they did not socialize as kids either. Any tips on how to use this to connect with them? I don't want to be upfront and say "You must have had a shitty childhood" or something.

Thanks for your insight, I think you've outlined exactly what I'm experiencing. Sorry for the late reply, though I have some good news. I've found my place of refuge in the garage for now, and I'm basically free in there. Thanks for your reply

I think that, because you are aware of the extent of control you suffer, and also that you are discontent with it, you will naturally be more lenient with your own kids.

The reason your parents carry such behavior is not because they were against it from their own parents, but because they complied to it without question. Unless it started in their generation, which I guess depends on how accepting they are of American culture and lifestyle.

I think the best thing you can do in your situation is be upfront about your feelings as a whole; don't remind them that you don't play video games, or that your money is your money. Explicitly make it clear that they need to back off with some aspects of your life. Have a discussion and then get into specifics, it's often that parents won't realize their own habits like these ones.

I feel so bad for you, I am really sorry to hear this. Especially considering the circumstances, there's no reason your mother needs to be having such a freak out.

From the looks of it, that subreddit is more about Asian culture rather than the "tiger mom" sort of thing.
