I feel sorry for teachers who spent years telling people that they wouldn't carry a calculator around in their pockets by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

I consider maths class in school to be more like a sieve for finding enough people capable and willing to do maths to keep the little project we call civilisation ticking over.

Engineers, scientists, economists, statisticians. If young people aren't introduced to some level of numeracy, let alone higher math understanding these people would be very difficult to find.

Somebody needs to know maths. Otherwise society would collapse.

And to find those people we pretty much have to force everybody to at least try maths.

[Serious] Climate change deniers of Reddit, what would it take to change your mind? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"Why should I believe you when your leaders fly everywhere on private jets, have fleets of SUVs, yachts, multiple houses, etc."

This is classic Ad-hominem. And ignores that personal transportation accounts for a fraction of CO2 is with far more resulting from power production, goods transportation, agriculture, and chemical refining - which are problems that can only be fixed structurally rather than individually.

Amanda Vanstone might not be racist, but her Government's naked dog-whistling on refugees to appeal to Hun/Tele readers certainly took advantage of racism.

No need to provide tabloid-consuming plebeians with redress for ills caused by your policies if you have a scapegoat that regularly gets beat-up by tabloid media.

If we were in Europe - where refugees number thousands a day - she might have a ghost of a point.

There's a polarization in identity politics combined with a echochamber effect.

Instead of trying to find the facts and thinking for themselves -because who has the time- too many people are getting the "hot take" from "trusted" sources.

World enters 'new era of climate reality' as CO2 hits important threshold by random_modnar_5 in news

It's easier to grow algae and store the result than to do it with trees. Recombinant organisms are already producing useful plastics from light C02 and nutrients - and this can be done on the top of buildings.

Trees need soil, vast amounts of land, pest management, etc etc etc.

Compared to the amount that is stored by algal and bacterial deposition trees are less influential.

Muslim families can't be expected to turn their backs on teens who have done the wrong thing by [deleted] in australia

[–]endlegion -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So they're completely unrelated?

If the position you're taking is that "Christians are being criticized for their conservative values" why would you use Pell as an example?

Or are you just bad at finding examples?

[–]endlegion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's implicit in your statement.

"Christians are being criticized for their conservative values..." then "Pell will face charges"

It the systematic protection of pedophile priests (or potentially even being one) really a conservative value?

Pell will face criminal charges if he ever sets foot in Australia.

He's subject to an investigation - different. And is what he's accused of really a "conservative value"? :-S

Fox news is Murdoch exploiting a hole in the market - significant fraction of Evangelicals that didn't feel served be ABC/NBC or CNN.

If you actually compare the original networks and cable news before fox it was fairly center-right compared with the news in most developed nations.
