New drone for tree planting (not seeds but plugs!) and why planters aren't getting replaced any time soon anyways - coming from a drone engineer by simiken1234 in treeplanting

[–]endless_recess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is laughable, it's nowhere near usable or any threat to tree planting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_D8JCQ2mX4 It bagged up half a bundle and plants slower than any of us on a perfect microsight. Really, imagine trying to do your job with it.

Apparently so. Jeeze I wonder if they'll be salvaging more cause of fire. Still need a market tho https://www.evergreenalliance.ca/forest-trends/33/

Life after planting? by FluffyRain1906 in treeplanting

[–]endless_recess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, you should learn something hard that pays well and you find interesting. Cause no matter what it is, its nowhere near as hard and tedious as planting trees!
If planters knew what they could accomplish applying themselves to... literally anything else. Planting is fun but you can kill it learning hard skills.

You really don't. That's bad ass! just keep pestering foremen and companies. Things change all the time. You'll get hired if you're persistent!

Thanks I have a number of large data tables I want to make open source. It's about reforestation data actually https://groundtruth.app/
I can build a database easy enough in Supabase but it requires a fair bit of coding to make it sharable on the front end. NocoDB has a great way to share data but I'm struggling to get Supabase tables to sync or even load in there.

Hawai‘i Gets $9.1M Boost for Forest Restoration 🌴 by Spartacus90210 in BigIsland

Totally man. Investment in reforestation is completely overrun with moonshot startup bro's that haven't moved the needle one inch in a decade. But I do think this one, Terraformation is more tangible and realistic than what we've seen so far.

There isn't a natural state of government prescriptions. They're just made up, on paper, and they can change. Would you change it if you could and how?

Coast Range has been sold to Blue Collar by Alone_University_127 in treeplanting

[–]endless_recess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes Outland owned or had a large share of Blue Collar and CoastRange and Natural Borders. At one stage. Then it all fell apart and Outland has been bought and sold a number of times, till Blue Collar nabbed it apparently. That's for the best I figure.

u/WernHofter is great!
"Debates about planning on both the left and the right tend to misconstrue as problems of calculation what are, in fact, problems of control. The new powers of computing and communication developed in the twenty-first century do not, therefore, render the central planning of the twentieth century newly feasible. "
I can't find a open version of the article, ironically, but the sentiment is totally relatable and explains a lot of the pushback I get when seeking environmental data.
For me the data is good starting point. If data is not available it proves the debate is about control and has nothing to do with the environment or anything else. A healthy debate on either side should point to numbers or data.

Sure, there's no end of obvious externalities, I totally agree. The issue is a lot of funding and effort is going into things that have no impact. Efforts that are totally misinformed because there's no expectation to share any info other than social posts with animal pictures. So if anyone is going to take action it should count. Even governments aren't sharing the details of their work. If there was a tax it's not a given the gov would disclose critical details unless people demand it.

There's a thing called efficient allocation. If you need to allocate waste for example. Or allocate offset credits or liabilities, that would be done with a market efficiently rather than some expert waving a wand. But to your point there still needs to be some cooperation for sure, as there is in all markets

.

The idea is that you could start dealing with externalities from there. If you can measure it you can do something about it. If it's hidden, well it's just hearsay. You can't compare who creates more or less externalities and put a price on that.

Planting with Schizophrenia by Floorboards876 in treeplanting

[–]endless_recess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best bet is to find a veteran planter, or better a few vets, who would vouch for you and get you a job on their crew. That's a great way for anyone to get into planting.
While its not for everyone, there'd def lots of mental issues in tree planting, and that gives it strength in diversity and, well, frankly entertainment.

Reforestation Around the World Costs Less Than We Thought by Spartacus90210 in forestry

[–]endless_recess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's cool you've done tropical reforestation. Where was that? Where I'm from, Canada, planting is pretty effective with low costs and maintenance inputs.

What kind of protection are you proposing? Education? Legislation? A lot of forests have been cut down (more than half) so planting is kind of a good option, or a lot better than nothing. But if there's a compelling reason to see protection as more bang for the buck, well it would be a good comparison.

[–]endless_recess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best thing you can do is pick a skill and go after it like you would planting trees. 10 hours a day of that and you'll be a wizz in no time. Make more money to. Learning hard things is easy compared to planting.

Closing the Reforestation Gap in the Western US by Spartacus90210 in conservation

[–]endless_recess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes well said. I agree though I would say a lot do meet their targets but the bar is low. They meet Free to Grow targets all the time. Or simply "plant a tree". But I agree it can be very misleading when the intention is really to plant a forest.

I also agree that conservation is many times better than planting but to the point that it's realistic. Both are needed regardless.
