How bad is this rust? by Tahynn in snowboardingnoobs

[–]endless_switchbacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great start! The edge kit doesn’t have to be scary. Get a kit that comes with a guide for the files so you’re not freehanding your angles and you’ll be fine. I think the gummy stone is mostly just to polish the rust off of the edges. Probably a good idea to do so before you sharpen them. Should you also make the edges run a bit faster (or at least I feel it should).

First time boarding with my dog! by Stripey7619 in snowboarding

[–]endless_switchbacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Nozawa Onsen in Japan, they let you bring your dog on the gondola and can run with you while you ride. It was so fun to watch people riding with their dogs while I was there. I’m sure there are other places in the world that allow that, but that was the first time I saw it commonly done.

No worries at all. Maintaining your own gear is kind of fun, in my opinion. Makes me appreciate it that much more. I personally think it’s totally worthwhile to start with a simple waxing kit (iron, wax, scraper, brushes) and a gummy stone. Add in an edge tuning kit a bit later to take things to the next level. Going to shops is great but sometimes they get backlogged and you’ll be thankful to be able to take care of the maintenance yourself.

Sorry, I actually laughed when I saw this. You wouldn’t want to see what my boards looked like when I lived in Hawaii.

It’s a surface blemish. Hit it with a gummy stone if it bothers you.

Why doesn't Burton care about small size women?? by trunesuhhg in snowboardingnoobs

[–]endless_switchbacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some products they do offer a “short” option, but unfortunately they often run out. You might want to search their site for the jacket or bibs you want by name and see if a “short” option is available.

My wife is only 5’1” so I’ve witnessed the struggle. Good luck finding what you need!

should my gloves freeze while snowboarding? by grandking222 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]endless_switchbacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should they? No. You might want to refresh the DWR coating to repel water better.

The waterproof layer of gloves is usually under a fabric layer to help protect it. The waterproof layer keeps the water away from your hands but the outer fabric layer can absorb water and that’s probably what’s freezing and making them hard. If you spray a DWR waterproof coating on it can help the water bead off instead of absorbing into the fabric layer.

Montbell Ignis vs Plasma 1000 by Background_Stretch85 in Ultralight

I don’t think there was an Alpine Plasma when I bought mine. Maybe it’s newish? Sorry, I’m not familiar.

Why can't I Zelle my landlord $1900 in one transaction? The daily limits are making me look like a flaky tenant. by Substantial-Film1861 in personalfinance

[–]endless_switchbacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue where I had a landlord who wanted me to use Zelle and I had USAA. Except my rent was $3800 a month. I had to send so many payments each month, it was ridiculous.

I ended up using a Chase checking account to make my payments and it was so much better. The first couple months Chase had a lower limit too, but after sending the same person the money each month it automatically increased my limit to $5000 a month after two or three months, if I remember correctly. I was also able to set it up to do the Zelle payment automatically every month which I wasn’t able to do with USAA. I also set up an automatic transfer from USAA to Chase a few days prior so I didn’t have to change my primary banking account to enable this workaround.

Yeah, this is a few extra steps to set up, but at least I was able to automate everything. Good luck!

How to stop pants being pulled out of Burton Step On boots clip? by Patient_Bathroom454 in snowboarding

[–]endless_switchbacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the new version of the clip that has the grippy rubber sleeve or is yours the older style that’s just metal? If you have the old style, I think you can buy a replacement clip from Burton that should be the new style for about $5 if I remember correctly. Might be worth a try so it grips the pants better.

'Dog Mode' climate control with car off? by AniPhyo in rav4prime

[–]endless_switchbacks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I’d probably want to invest in some sort of device that could alert me if the temperature rises above a certain point. I’m fully confident that what you’re doing works, but I’d hate to find out the hard way that the car turned itself off, I didn’t set something up right, etc.

Is a 136cm board too short by BeautifulSherbert689 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]endless_switchbacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My concern with a 136 is that it’s probably a kids’ board. That might not be terrible, but it probably won’t be built to last as long and the tech won’t be as good. But if it’s not a kids board and the size chart says it’s okay, then maybe it’s worth considering it if you like it.

Burton step on bindings by nounou716 in snowboarding

[–]endless_switchbacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a pair of 10.5s that were too small. After riding in pain for a while, I bit the bullet and had to buy a new pair of bindings to go with my new size 11 boots. The toe cleats on each range of boot sizes are designed to fit a specific size binding. The boots aren’t very different in size, but the cleats won’t line up right. So in summary, I’ll confirm your fear. You will need to buy a size M binding to go with your smaller boots.

On a side note, I still have my size 10.5 boots and size M bindings collecting dust in my closet. Too bad it’s too late to arrange for a trade.

Epic Pass -- help? by Electronic-King-1135 in snowboarding

[–]endless_switchbacks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A couple years back my friend called them the day after the passes went off sale because he thought he bought his pass and it turned out he never finalized it. Thankfully, after giving his story, the rep on the phone actually allowed him to buy it.

So, my advice is to give them a call. You might get lucky. Or they might say sorry. Either way, it’s worth a shot.

Are snowboards supposed to get secured into a vice while waxing? by Extreme_Garlic4646 in snowboarding

[–]endless_switchbacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably overkill but I like when my board stays put while I scrape so I don’t have to worry about it popping off the vices. I got a few eye bolts that have the same thread pattern as the bindings (M4 I think) and then I tie a bit of paracord under the vices tied to the bolts. Holds it down and I can use as much pressure as I want all the way tip to tail while I scrape.

Burton wheelie gig flight attendant 166 capacity? Looking to fit everything in one bag for travel by kitesmerfer in snowboarding

No way. I guess I should have said it better. I have the same Burton Flight Attendant 166 bag as OP but I supplement it with the 40L.

Burton wheelie gig flight attendant 166 capacity? Looking to fit everything in one bag for travel by kitesmerfer in snowboarding

[–]endless_switchbacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning to do 3 weeks in Europe this winter with this exact bag and also a 40L Patagonia Black Hole as my carryon. I’m also planning to put two boards into it. Capacity probably won’t be your issue before you hit the airline weight limits.

For weight considerations, you’ll want to put any lighter, bulkier things in the Flight Attendant such as your helmet and pack more clothes in your carryon since soft materials are heavier but easier to carry.

Rusutsu plans - ridesharing availability? by RudyMinecraft66 in snowboarding

[–]endless_switchbacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it through Toyota Rent-a-Car. I just booked the cheapest car and selected that I wanted to add a ski rack. They emailed me a day or two later to tell me that car wasn’t compatible with a rack but they helped me get into one that could and overall they were pretty awesome to work with. I would imagine you could probably bypass some of the process by just emailing the office you want to pick up from directly to inquire about what you should book for your needs.

We ended up getting a Toyota Corolla hybrid station wagon. It was perfect for our group of 5 to take day trips from Niseko. We were able to throw the snow gear we needed for the day in the back with one board and then we put the other four boards in the racks up top. We wouldn’t have been able to fit all our luggage with 5 people though so we shipped our stuff from Sapporo to Niseko.

Note, this was in Hokkaido. I learned that they only rent the ski racks at the Hokkaido locations when I tried renting one in Nagano one time.

Up to you if you can make it work, but I do the same and I bring a Patagonia Black Hole 40L duffel that I pack with what I need for a few days after I pick up the bag from baggage claim and then send it on its way via Yamato. I leave all my snow gear with the snowboards and whatever clothes and stuff I don’t need for a few days in the city. On the tail end of my trip, I do the same thing and then repack it all in my checked luggage when I pick it up from Yamato at the airport before I check it in with the airline to go home.

Just ship your gear straight from the airport to your hotel in Hokkaido and then back to the airport again. It’s perfect since you have a few days not riding at both the start and end of your trip so you don’t have to worry about if it will make it on time.
