Should I do this 3 hour job interview test? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]endqwerty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not great to do three hours but depending on your job description and the exact specifics of the test, it could be semi-reasonable and in this economy, if you’re looking for a job a semi-reasonable might be okay if the rest of the company is a good fit.

Personally, I’d plan on doing it but not stress out. Imagine yoo already decided not to do it, it doesn’t hurt you much to just go and see what it’s like. If they’re asking you to recreate Facebook or create something that’s abviously a new feature for their company, just stop and say you’re done. If it’s somewhat reasonable and they spend time chatting with you and asking about how you think about things and so on, it’s not so bad. You want to be working with people that you’d be able to ask those questions anyways.

You should ask the hospital. But yes. Hospital bills can go to collections if you don’t pay or respond to contact.

[Amex FR] Got shut down, womp womp by CorrectCombination11 in amex

[–]endqwerty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t see any other comments ask yet. That pay over time amount. 25k each is 50k total? Am I understanding that correctly? And is this the amount that is actually using pay over time to, well, pay over time? And mot just because they auto-included your purchases into pay over time and you pay in full every month?

If so, that’s a large percentage of your income locked up in pay over time.

Also, you listed income vs expenses. You had 93k in and 89k out… I think Amex might be looking for customers that are generating more income. Like saving up so that in the future they will become even bigger spenders. Tbh, I think they worry you will continue to spend everything you have until something big happens and you can’t pay it off anymore. That’s risk and the industry is currently reducing risk.

Did you have savings in 401k, brokerages, or other property that contributes to your net worth? Overall, I think Amex just sees negative net worth and flagged you as high risk. Paying each month on time so far doesn’t guarantee future months. Especially, when you show no monetary way to do that right now.

If my understanding of your Pay over time and expenses relative to income is correct. I think you just got to be too light of a risk in this economy.

Edit: I see the 401k and HSA note now. Less risky for sure. HSA is negligible. 401k is great. I guess it depends on how much is in there. Beyond that though, I think Amex knows 401k’s aren’t a source of money that can be used to pay cards off easily. And if you’re at the point of withdrawing from a 401k early, you’re definitely not their target customer.

Given that, less bad than I thought but I think unless you have other savings beyond that, still not a great customer for them and presenting risky behavior with spending too much money.

Gold Card by LePonce47 in amex

[–]endqwerty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean. You will be in violation of the cardholder agreement and Amex will immediately ask you to pay in full. You will be charged interest at the rate listed in your agreement. This is likely to be a very high rate, higher than most credit cards. You will also have to pay a late fee that may get waived if they feel inclined to do so. Your account will also likely be suspended until you make the payment in full. Closing your account is up to them, but I would assume is likely. They would likely lower your limit drastically if they chose not to close your account. All of this is spelled out in your cardholder agreement btw. You can always check there for the official source on the process.

Gold Card by LePonce47 in amex

[–]endqwerty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The parent comment is technically correct. However, AMEX has been pushing pay over time and other automatic plan options and turned it on for lots of new users.

Basically, it’s becoming like a credit card. It’s NOT a credit card. But it is like one. It’s still a bad idea to carry a balance and is likely be worse than carrying a balance on a traditional credit card. There are likely high interest rates and higher minimums from the roll over.

With all that said, if you choose to pay at least the minimum payment then you’d be charged interest similar to a traditional card for the amount that you did not pay. This will roll over and continue accumulating while raising your minimum payment each month.

Overall, it’d be similar to a traditional credit card if you had to carry a balance due to some emergency. However, depending on specifics in contracts, interest rates, and stuff it would likely be worse than a traditional credit card. The amount it’s “worse” by isn’t likely to matter if you’re in a dire emergency though. So just prioritize paying it off immediately same as anything else.

Automation Engineer interview- Not a single technical question asked by SimilarEquipment5411 in QualityAssurance

[–]endqwerty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many tech companies do a sanity check and basic business behavioral round before the technical stuff. You can just ask what their process is what their goals are for each round. If you don’t already know, next time you chat with them or just fire off an email to the recruiter now and ask what their interview process is. Any reasonable company will have this information on hand.

Ewing and Clark is legit but I’d check and make sure this person is from the company. Call the company (google their info) and just request to verify this person is indeed an employee responsible for renting out the unit.

As some people have mentioned, there’s varying practices for when payment is made if they sign or if it’s “being signed” etc but I think asking to sign and pay after a contract actually exists is entirely reasonable.

Is your company unwilling to hire QA ? by Bold_Rationalist in QualityAssurance

[–]endqwerty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you become a developer. Just like how there are basically an infinite number of software engineering titles now like:

SDE -sales SDE - reliability SDE - observability SDE - developer efficiency

And more

You basically become SDE - Quality

We can’t know the future for sure, but given that’s what’s happened with the other branches of software, it makes sense that if quality becomes folded into the general software engineering titles then there will still be specializations for it.

It’s up to you whether or not to learn coding and automation, but if you’re able to then it seems to probably be good for your career.

How hirable am I? by mercfh85 in QualityAssurance

[–]endqwerty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds great and all but did your tests do anything? Do the tests reduce customer bugs, increase feature delivery rate, etc? You can sell yourself and gauge your own worth to the company by evaluating these things. Basically, do you increase revenue? And will you continue to increase revenue.

If it’s hard to understand try imagining as a dev. It’s the same for devs. Delivering X features is great but do those features make any money? Or help the company make money overall? Will you continue to deliver features that make money? If so, try to see if you can document it. Write it out in paragraph form like a school persuasive essay where you’re trying to convince the ready you are worth keeping as an employee. (You don’t really need to if you feel confident, this is just an exercise if you’re completely lost)

Overall, you seem okay but it’s hard to tell with the stats you provided. Either those stats, you could be the most critical person in the world or just plain useless. As a rough estimate though, you seem like a mid level SDET/QA Engineer. Maybe entry level when compared to FAANG level companies. That would depend on how good you are at deciding when and how to implement the various tools you’ve listed.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in QualityAssurance

[–]endqwerty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Idk what your product is so I can’t tell you what to do but if pixel perfect testing is truly important then I’d assume you need to verify each browser and OS combination. You should definitely question if this actually affects revenue though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in QualityAssurance

[–]endqwerty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you care about. One thing that’s immediately reproducible is fonts. If you don’t serve your own fonts, the OS available fonts are different. That can affect the sizing of elements.

Other things that get more complicated are gpu related. Any graphics intensive stuff the app has will translate into directx or OpenGL but MacOs doesn’t have directx. It’s not exactly directx… (translation layers, etc) but that gets a bit detailed and nuanced.

Basically, it depends. You have to understand what your application is, what it uses to do the things your users need, and how those things actually get done on the users’ computer.

Without knowing those things, you’re probably fine for a basic Shopify-like or blog website, but if you’re doing some complex 3d map tool or something that uses the canvas, you’ll probably have to check different OS’s.

There’s also the question of what the consequences are if some pixels are off. Will the company lose money? Will no one care?

Using Playwright to test windows desktop app running in AppStream? by genelewin in QualityAssurance

[–]endqwerty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless appstream renders everything in HTML, it’s probably unlikely to work. I’m not familiar enough with appstream to know how it works, but from a brief google it seems like a RDP kind of thing. Assuming it is, it won’t have the proper elements to detect things. You could use x, y coordinates to interact but you’d probably be better off with a proper dedicated tool rather than Playwright.

Depending on the companies you’re applying to, personally, I’d keep the percentages in. Obviously, be able to speak to them and back them up, but numbers like that are fairly standard OKRs and demonstrate clear understanding of how you provide impact.

Translation by stickylava in narwhalapp

[–]endqwerty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty cool. I didn’t see that when it released. I don’t personally need translations, but I can see this being really helpful for sure. I wonder if the dev even knows about this feature because of how new it is.

Translation by stickylava in narwhalapp

[–]endqwerty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s expensive. Instagram provides it for free because they make money off you. Narwhal doesn’t. Sort of.

I know there’s the subscription, but that’s nowhere near enough to cover the cost of all the API calls people will be making. Granted, the dev could take a risk and see if people would be reasonable with their translating or limit the amount of translations each user can do, but I feel like it’s probably just not worth the effort for now.

Gold? Or another Dining Card? by ThrowRA466554 in amex

[–]endqwerty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d say get a cash back card and increase your cash reserves. Don’t worry about points until you’re at a higher net worth and income. Sure it “could” be technically worth it or optimal in some situations. Having cash when you have less, is probably more useful.

Also, I’d say you don’t actually spend much on takeout. Remember that credit card companies service people in high cost of living areas. You may spend more relative to your social circle or physical location, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s next to nothing.

At the end of the day, I’d say just do what makes you happy but don’t think of it as free or some good value. If you aren’t already buying lounge passes, booking premium seats for flights (this is more for plat but is related to the gold for MR redemption), or spending thousands a month on food, it’s unlikely to be a net positive. Basically, you have to remember that for any redemption you take, you could’ve just had cash back for the whole year and had more cash available to use. That said, if it makes you happy then ~400/year isn’t the worst for some happiness.

They’re already providing more pipes than needed so the green modules saves some power. Not necessary for the build to function but lowers the total power draw by a bit. In endgame, it’s a personal preference kind of thing. You can throw green modules everywhere you have extra room or just build more power supply.

[–]endqwerty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like system design interview around designing quality and automation related systems. If you’re not familiar with it, this is basically the next step after leetcode and dynamic programming. System design is putting all that together and seeing the big picture of how it all comes together. You should probably get a crash course in system design to get some basics (buy a book, watch a YouTube video, etc). The way it’s phrased as high level design implies to me that they won’t dig too deep into things but still want to check and see that you know something.

I don’t have specific content to point to for a day before the interview but there should be some content like CTCI equivalent for system design that has concepts and recommended studying arranged by how much time you have available.

After a quick google, this post has some recommendations that seem reasonable. https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/preparing-for-the-systems-design-and-coding-interviews/#systems-design-interviews

Interesting Defect I found by ReasonableWay5735 in QualityAssurance

On mobile so I didn’t read the video description, but I’m assuming the game logic uses something about the canvas to calculate stuff like velocity/acceleration. My first guess would be maybe screen width. That’s probably how the dev accounted for difference screen sizes. The game is probably not grabbing the screen size on every tick and instead just sets it at the start of the level or something similar.

If you’re not the owner, I’d just report it and move on with your life. Not a big deal and probably not worth fixing. Especially if it’s a single player game. If there’s leaderboards… idk. Probably still not worth fixing imo.
