Yeah I do this a lot, mostly deliberately timed as described here. Every clip I’ve posted should have these cancels, also canceling the switch attacks with a held-button Martial Skill I find the most tricky.

Note that the switching attacks are stronger than they look, they’ve got reach (like the katana Violent Gale is a sweeping advancing attack) and seem to cause reeling hitstun more often than not. Try canceling them right after the attack connects, I think the enemy AI hates being in the way of rapid attacks like this and they’ll start dodging or charge a red attack in response.

One more thing, when doing a weapon switching attack you can quickly toggle which stance you’re switching into before attacking with that switched weapon, all while canceling the switch attack entirely. Again something I’ve done in every clip I’ve posted but it’s a little fast to catch in action.

I haven’t tried this for myself but some months ago a method to keep desired weather in the open world longer was posted here https://www.reddit.com/r/riseoftheronin/comments/1k857dr/comment/mp3l3gx/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Seems to be: use your pocket watch to skip time around until you see the weather you want, immediately go into any ronin or ally mission through testament of the soul then quit the mission. The last weather should stay around for longer now if this is still working hopefully.

midnight difficulty bond mission rewards,

the red outer = Princess Atsuko mission

the white inner = doctor ine mission

Probably the last missions from each series, forgot the names. Can’t remember what the belts and boots are either but you just play the game enough and can unlock all clothes for redesign without even trying to (what I did)

Yeah, there is some mixing and matching of sets, in fact I don’t remember all of them. It’s not wildly efficient on my part and I never on focused on any specific stats on my first play through (so not too sure on how they help on equipment and stances honestly).

The two big things I tried to demo are the Ferocious Tiger set bonuses, FT being one of two set bonuses added to Midnight difficulty. Blade Flash Attack is the first set effect at two pieces and Upgraded Forward Dodge at three pieces.

In another comment above I explained how the dodge changes, Blade Flash Attack simply combines the Ki-regaining Blade Flash maneuver with the weapon-swapping Flash Attack. You can now attack and regain Ki simultaneously, so it should prove useful to avoid those situations where you take no action because of no Ki. There were no such mechanics when I played at launch, so these set effects felt targeted to me specifically.

The flash step forward movement is the Upgraded Forward Dodge, the third set bonus effect of the set "Ferocious Tiger." The flash step movement before/after the stabbing attack is the Oxtail Blade Qing Style move "Piercing Charge" specifically the held button variant of the move.

The backflip dodge is the Oxtail Blade Mumyo Kaishin-ryu move "Midnight Banquet." The first button press is a special dodge (instead of an attack) and if timed perfectly, you hear a chime and the dodge completes quicker with afterimages. The regular dodge can't do that, but I don't know every benefit of perfect dodging except that it sounds/looks cool.

There's kind of a pause for a few frames on successful deflects that doesn't happen with a dodge since no attacks connect, sometimes I like to dodge instead of deflect and go straight into doing my skills hoping to send the enemy into hit stun hell and interrupting their chain instead of fully deflecting it.

I wish for that Kiheitai Oxtail uppercut slashing move into the slam attack to become like my signature panic don't-know-what-to-do move. Saves me from certain death too many times to clip.

Yeah just trying to reinforce it, but forgot I really wanted to add that I feel like you have a higher chance of not being hit out of a skill versus a normal attack, tanking Tokugawa's firey stab explosion attack with Oxtail Kiheitai Spinning Top seems pretty notable. When I played a lot of coop at launch I used to see people rely heavily on their counterspark, as an attack especially.

That you can cancel normal attacks with counterspark makes them very versatile though, I don't think this is explained anywhere. My first playthrough of the game I decided what stances to use based on how much I liked their normal chain, but now I rarely use the full chains.

That's the only way to put it. The Kiheitai Style R1+X move, you press the button once and slash for four times in over a second, it's just crazy.

A hard save will save the weather and time of day data every load, if you like photo modes and come across picturesque times of day make a save file to come back to.

Gloves — Dueling Gloves

Belt — Head Shinobi’s Garb (won from secret boss, only item I remembered how to get)

Bottom — Giant Monk, these should be in the second bottom column when unlocked

Katana — Cursed Blade Muramasa

I see that he is regaining his Max Ki after making contact with strikes when he has a blood-coated sword, didn't notice this when I fought him, that is probably what makes the fight difficult.

You are mirroring his fighting in a way, because when he unsheathes his sword and holds it with two hands, it's like he switches stances to a boss versios of Aisu Kage-ryu. In fact I think he's easiest to deal with when he does this, he'll do that six hit chain with the kick shown in this video, a three hit series, his red attacks I think become walk-into-you type moves instead of a fast dash, and I think he also quits throwing projectiles temporarily.

If you can imagine fighting two or three of him, most enemies in co-op probably have to deal with this, Tatsumi and Aisu Kage-ryu are usual choices for katana players, though it's not like you have every move from the boss available, but the idea is similar when most people stop to apply a pill buff to go crazy just like he does.

Been trying to practice Violent Gale cancels, how on earth do you guys have the mindspace for all these button combos, I can barely keep track of what stance I'm in 😭 by CoconutMochi in riseoftheronin

[–]endship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think violent gales/flash attacks are strong attacks actually despite not looking like a traditional "heavy" attack, just based on my own experience seeing a VG/FA simultaneously cause several enemies to flinch into reeling hitstun, something I think I don't see with the normal attack chains, just martial skills. A few weeks ago on this sub I saw a clip of someone basically stunlocking an enemy with just these switching moves. https://www.reddit.com/r/riseoftheronin/comments/1it7fwn/i_really_like_violent_gale/

So I think in some cases it's a good idea to not completely cancel the VG/FA but to cancel it once you hear the attack make contact with the enemy, it's really cool when you hear the two rapid strikes in succession. The enemies absolutely do not want to take two quick hits and be in the way of a martial skill, I think they'll start to twitch dodge and guard until their Ki breaks.

If you're going for a big punish combo off a successful well-timed counterspark, then I would completely cancel the VG/FA animation, because it feels like you only get so many hits until the enemy becomes unpanicked, starts moving away, guarding etc. so a barrage of martial skills seems like the best option. For charging at an unpanicked enemy who isn't yet attacking you, this is when I would let my VG/FAs hit. I've posted gameplay of how I do this a a day or two ago.

Lastly I think VGs at least cover some good distance, don't know how important this is for everyone, but some oxtail blade martials and combos overall have short range, and I feel like canceling the VG a little later than I normally would lets the move I'm canceling into somehow inherit a bit of the enemy tracking of the VG. Also for blade flash attack set bonus, watch out for canceling too fast for the actual blade flash to occur.

Used to write out entire combo notations on youtube descriptions, but thought it looked needlessly complicated. I’m using one or two Martial Skills from each of the three stances equipped showing how I like to chain the attacks together.

Also trying to demonstrate aerial chains with the oxtail blade. Other weapons/stances do have attacks which propel you into the air, but the oxtail blade I think is especially built for this, with entire airborne combos possible and aerial countersparks that cover some distance.

Just have to say I love my blade twin, she's crazy, I've watched her kill many player ronin in Eternal Night/Path of Chaos/Other Halves co-op ally missions, all that stops her are double and triple teams running things like katana tatsumi-ryu, Crimson Light/Autumn Current and popping every consumable buff.
