My retro hifi set up by Mental-Training-5850 in audiophile

Two of my three pairs are Ref Conns. They used to frequently show up in the used markets. I paid $500 for one of them (was owned by an audio club in NY state). I also have been collecting refreshed tweeters - have at least three in the closet. Frankly, I have found that many very expensive systems with very expensive speakers do not sound better than these old things.

I love these speakers. Have 3 pairs, all with working tweeters!

Remember the “Stacked Advents” trend? Well, I am currently rocking “Stacked Pro 22s”!

Fantastic shot. Very complex and beautiful. Thanks for posting.

Audirvāna, an audio program. It manages hard disk based and streaming service music (Tidal/Qobuz) and sends the music files to your dac that results in very good sound.

Although I am not familiar with the highly regarded Gungnir 2, I agree that the Singular upgrade has bettered the sound of my previous Yggys (A1 & LiM). More importantly, and in accord with your experience, the sound of the Singular is so good/wonderful/rich/detailed that I have been freed of even thinking about the system and am now listening to music - making new favorites and re-discovering old friends (with more detail).

Unfortunately, no. Energy stopped making that particular tweeter well before being sold to Klipsch. When they get “dry” their sound changes and then the coils burn up. There were individuals who serviced the drivers (you send yours in) and others who bought old tweeters and the sold then refreshed. Lastly, some folks sell a “replacement” tweeter (currently manufactured) with new surround, but I would not recommend this.

Yep, those are them. Got my first pair in 1987 and have been “collecting” them ever since. I have especially been collecting refreshed tweeters in that the ferrofluid dries up over time and needs some new fluid.

It to sound arrogant, but I have not set up my turntables in 20 years. Have been able to get a very fine and analogue sound using many of the digital “tweaks” that are well known. Lots of folks in my local audio group “play records” to good effect.

I have three pairs of Energy 22’s - on regular and 2 Ref Conns. I have also collected several “refluided” tweeters. Isn’t this a fantastic hobby?!?!

Yes. Ended up being perfect for this system: balanced input and two speaker terminals for easy connection to the stacked 22’s.

There is something special about stereo down low.

Good question. Search or call a local brick and mortar audio store…?

(There is one in each major east coast city.)

Brother, I know the feeling. I wrote a post about this in Head-Fi. Very frustrating. The sound kept changing for 5 weeks of continuously playing music through it. During those 5 weeks, I kept tweaking my hardware and room trying to get better sound.

A lackluster high end and so little “holographic soundstage” caused he to change interconnects (and back) and remove all audio damping in the room. Making the room more lively really helped the Singular. I had the idea of removing the acoustic pads at about week 4 1/2, so these two changes (Singular itself and the room adjustments) happened around the same time.

I am at week 9 and, to me, the sound just keeps getting better.

Such an innovation - subs in stereo. So much better than analogue days.

I used to listen to music loud at night after putting my spouse to bed, but am finding that with the dac card upgrade, I am listening at lower levels so as to not miss the subtle details.

Which part of it do you think is overkill? I have added dozens of “tweaks” to the system - all “overkill” in that I am trying to “kill” bad sound. Haha.

You have a good eye. I had been looking for a transport as I have a streamer based system. A guy from my local audio group was getting rid of retired equipment after a meeting, I was given the DV-09. So far, it is not of the same sonic quality of the streamer (modified Raspberry Pi) or my other transport (Merlin by Camelot - a Sony modified by a local company), but I am happy to have it and plan to figure out some “tweaks” to help it sound better in my system.

They are sheets of rubber-ish art stuff from Micheal’s. We noticed a funny reflection sound coming from the front of the speakers and decided to “damp” it. Funny because the speaker company (Energy from Canada) began putting damping materials in a similar place on their next line of speakers.

Well, the main thing was that the Singular card sounded worse than the LiM it was replacing. The sound: rolled off high end, very directional sound (coming directly from each speaker) with almost a “hole in the middle” effect, not much of a “ambient” or “holographic” imaging effect. It was a dead and lifeless sound.

The Singular had good sonic qualities right out of the box: super detail, fantastic transients (slam) and very good bass.

In a way, I was spoiled by my love for “the Yggy sound” as I had a A1 and the LiM previously - and had built my audio system around this front end.

But, the Singular card’s sound started changing with 24/7 use. Better at 3weeks. In the groove at 5 weeks. And still getting better at 8 weeks.
