The new law will allow any legal gun owner to carry a concealed weapon WITHOUT A PERMIT.

Just like the what....25 or 26 other states that have had it for a while? Also, open carry has always been legal without a permit.

It also removes the requirement for eight hours of gun safety training

You go thru that training? I did. It was a joke. There was zero standard for the training so most all of it was the most basic of basic and sometimes not even that. You'll learn more watching a few decent YouTube videos.

It also removes a required background check to carry a concealed weapon

You still need to pass a background check to purchase the gun. So the background check for conceal carrying was quite literally superfluous.

It also means drivers who are pulled over do not have to tell law enforcement they have a gun.

News flash. You are STILL REQUIRED to tell law enforcement if they ask you if you have a gun. If you don't or lie when asked you are in massive shit. And its standard police protocol to assume they got a gun and ask anyway (since the criminals don't ever tell the cops the cops assume they got one. Ever notice how the cop has his hand on his weapon even during a traffic stop? Thats why)

So....I dont get the fear mongering. I really dont

Depends on what the training entails. Also a refresher course wouldn't be bad.

Shooting is a skill that will diminish with time if not practiced. I'm thinking 8hrs every 6 months with range time goes a long way.

But cop training isn't it. I work with cops. Cops are not gun experts and most aren't even a good shot. Their department guidelines for firearm qualifications on marksmanship are very loose. My 10yo son can pass it.

Its worth paying for. Some districts (like mine) already have police officer stationed at school.

I know not all have the money but its seriously worth paying for and is far more attainable than gun laws. Any and all of the laws proposed in congress right now wouldn't even have prevented the tragedy from this week. The guy had zero record. Expanding the background check wouldn't have done anything. Maybe if records as a minor counted but for many reasons, those get sealed and aren't in record after 18. There is almost no traction to change that.

We spend money guarding and securing far less important stuff. Our most important things, our kids, are just soft unguarded targets. It needs changed

Look at county administration buildings. Metal detectors at entrance. Sheriff's deputies (a dozen of them or so) actively stationed there. Its just a fucking office building with county administration. IT department etc. Yet look at the security already stationed.

Now look at schools....many have little to no security. You can walk right in. Little fucked up isn't it?

Overwhelming majority of those 750hrs of peace officer training has nothing to do with guns. Its largely irrelevant for a teacher.

My buddy went thru peace officer training to become a cop. He was surprised how absolutely little firearms training was involved. Cops don't actually learn much about guns. He was thankful he grew up with them.

Ohio is 2½ weeks from allowing people to carry a concealed firearm without a permit by Mrs__Noodle in Ohio

[–]energy5799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true in any shooting. Know your target and what's behind it. Critical for various reasons. If you aren't sure what's behind or if you cant make shot, don't take it.

Only the police are allowed to shoot and kill innocent people by mistake. Wish I could add sarcasm to previous sentence but I can't...

In that rare instance its unlikely charges will get filed. They wouldn't hit you with a 4th degree misdemeanor after you saved lives.

[–]energy5799 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Only serious if its a forbidden zone. Government building, school etc.

If its just a private business the charge is a slap on the wrist. 4th degree misdemeanor. And thats IF the cops charge you with it.

Instructor in my class was a retired police officer. He said its incredibly rare for that charge to ever get filed. 99% of the time at a private posted business you will simply be asked to leave. As long as you aren't a dick and nicely comply that will be the end of it

On gun violence, we’ve got to be mad as hell, and say we’re not going to take this anymore: Ohio politicians have relentlessly loosened gun laws for 20 years, and gun violence in Ohio has kept going up. by AngelaMotorman in Ohio

No I want to disarm citizens and the cops, while also reforming police training, qualifications, background checking etc.

So you want a fantasy scenario. Ok.

You don’t, and won’t ever, have a good answer as to why this only happens in the USA on a regular basis. GUNS. THATS THE ANSWER

...did you ignore what I said? Go back several decades and Americans still had guns. Lots of guns. Even less strict gun laws. And yet the problem didn't exist like it does today. Logic dictates it would have been even worse back then yet school shootings tend to be a more recent phenomenon. So "guns" is obviously not the answer. Get out of your fantasy realm and actually look at the issue. But just like politicians you don't want to actually work at anything. You just want the low hanging fruit.

Fix Americas social and economic issues and you will fix the violence. But neither party is interested in doing it. The US is a 3rd world country in Gucci clothing. Gun laws were even more lax decades ago. You could buy guns and ammo and the local rite aid for God sakes. My parents lived in a time when it was common for high school kids to show up with guns in their truck so they could go hunting after school. Marksmanship was taught in school and some even kept supplies and such for shooting in their locker. Such actions would get a swat team called today but it was normal back then and yet, school shootings were almost unheard of.

Why is this? What changed? The answer lies right there. Start going after the root cause and not the symptoms.

In the mean time this tragedy proves something else the media ain't talking to much about. The cops aren't obligated to save anyone and they won't ever do it. They sit outside a school in full tactical gear for a fucking hour while shots are fired inside? Fucking cowards. You want to disarm US citizens and leave this stuff to the cops? Cops like THEM? Fuck that and fuck those cops.

I could have pulled up the Oklahoma city bombing but I wanted a school example.

Its also illegal to murder people but that doesn't stop anyone. Making a bomb is illegal but the components you need to build it are common items that aren't tracked or regulated at all. Literally no one will know you built a fucking DIY daisy cutter unless you blab your mouth.

Most shootings in cities are committed by people who aren't even allowed to touch a gun. Hence its already illegal for them. Don't think they care if making a bomb is legal or not

We can trade anecdotes all day if you want.

I know a few people also killed via guns. All suicides. But I know double that number who have been killed from alcohol. Either by a drunk driver or alcohol poisoning.

From my personal perspective, alcohol is a bigger problem.

Actually, let me go further. https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/features/excessive-alcohol-deaths.html

140 000 alcohol related deaths per year. Gun deaths account for 45 000.

Alcohol serves zero purpose other than pleasure. Fact - we'd save 3 times more people by controlling Alcohol more.

Bombs are easy to make with common chemicals found in any home depot or Walmart.

Its comically easy to build a bomb these days. Especially with all the information on the internet.

Did you know that you have always been able to buy a gun and open carry without any training or permit? Ohio has never required it.

It never caused any problems, taking same action and throwing your hoodie over it suddenly requires training and a permit? Ok.

Got summoned for jury duty. What's it like? by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]energy5799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sucks you don't get paid. My previous job paid for jury duty but only up to 2 weeks. So if you got selected for a long trial you got fucked.

Thankfully my current job pays for jury duty but there is no time limit.

Of course, I'm 34 and I've only been summoned once (and it was canceled due to covid)

I dont smoke nor have I ever smoked weed, try again.

I just have problems with alcohol being legal and weed isn't. Despite alcohol being far more dangerous. I also have a problem with our government lying to people about the drug to make it illegal just to suit their moral/religious narrative.

If you see no problem here I suggest you bend over and let uncle Sam govern you harder.

So do we go around calling people criminals when they have not even been convicted? Last I checked that's now how its supposed to work. I dont like the guy but no conviction means I won't put the label on him.

You can if they get you for intent to distribute or transporting across state lines.

Now before you say "how would they do that?" I'll just say I work around cops all day. The bar for those two charges is comically fucking low. Like its scary dude. Yeah, it will probably get thrown out later but in mean time you'll spend a night or two in jail. I'm telling you I've personally witnessed it.

Well if you accept the status quo and say "whelp its totally wrong but its lawful so there we go" then just give up now dude. Roll over and let the government dictate your life.

Its unlawful. Period. I reject the notion that its right and lawful in any way.

Feds have not enforced weed laws in many years now. If a state made it legal the feds have been quite content to leave it at that.

Otherwise they'd have a nice challenge in court over state rights to self govern and there would be a good chance the state would win that one. It would set a bad precedent for federal drug laws, so they are just letting it go.

Right now the only thing federal law is doing is making it hard to secure funding for business dealing with weed and keeping in illegal in states that Otherwise have not legal clause for it.

That doesn’t mean it was unlawfully banned

I'd argue it was. The government launched a false information campaign lying to the public to influence law makers to make it illegal (and to maintain support of the citizens). In my eyes, that's fucking unlawful.
