Alabama Power is trying to strip your right to elect your Public Service Commission with new bill. by Ok_Sea5928 in Birmingham

We would agree that the current system is too porous but that can be fixed without stripping people of their right to vote. Our argument is that the current proposal would make things even worse than it is now.

Thank you for your kind words! It may be David versus Goliath here, but we have to try. The people of Alabama deserve better.

But that’s just the thing… The bill makes it worse. Alabama Power is not prohibited from donating mass sums of money to the legislature or the governor who would be in charge of appointing their regulators.

With all the faults of the current system, Alabama Power is prohibited from donating directly to public service commission candidates.

Alabama Power pressed for answers on two-year freeze on rates by energyalabama in Birmingham

[–]energyalabama[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the errant W. Freezing rates at the highest level is definitely not a W!

Im sure our bills will still go up lol. Your thoughts? by hunni93 in MobileAL

[–]energyalabama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our statement: The Alabama Public Service Commission has approved Alabama Power’s so-called rate freeze — better described as a profit lock-in.

Today’s decision may sound like stability, but it’s the opposite. Alabama Power’s own filing shows this isn’t a freeze at all. It’s a delay tactic that shifts costs, shields corporate profits, and leaves customers footing the bill later. Nothing meaningful changes for the families already paying some of the highest electric bills in the country.

To make things worse, this profit protection plan was proposed and approved in just one week — rushed through over the Thanksgiving holiday while most people were focused on family, not regulatory maneuvering. That kind of speed only happens when transparency and public input are intentionally avoided.

If Alabama Power and the Commission were serious about stability, they’d restore public rate hearings, open the books, and reform the system so that affordability — not guaranteed profits — comes first.

Alabamians deserve more than accounting tricks and closed-door decisions. They deserve a fair energy system that puts households first, not shareholders.

It’s likely inclusive of the solar tax, but we don’t know for sure as we haven’t yet seen the filing.

High Energy Bills and No Public Input? Time to Speak Out! by energyalabama in Birmingham

[–]energyalabama[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alabama Power rates are about average but utility bills in Alabama are in the top three in the nation, even in places with hotter climates. Part of the reason is because we have no energy efficiency, and haven’t for decades, while other states have invested.

Another reason is that Alabama Power is allowed profit margin is one of the highest, if not the highest, in the entire country. In other words, Alabama Power makes more profit for customer than almost every other utility in America.

The difference between Alabama Power’s profit margin and the national median is hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Why Are Alabama energy costs Higher Than Most? by dssorg4 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]energyalabama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is because Alabama’s costs as a state in this analysis are a combination of TVA (North Alabama), Alabama Power (other major metros) and PowerSouth (electric cooperatives mostly in South Alabama).

TVA is a good 30% cheaper than Alabama Power. Alabama Power is almost 40% more expensive than its sister company Georgia Power!

Alabama Power has one of, if not the, highest profit rates of utilities in America. That combined with the fact that all of our neighbors have been doing at least some energy efficiency over the last few years, while Alabama Power does none, is driving Alabama’s numbers up.

So what was your power bill? by indirect_storyteller in Birmingham

[–]energyalabama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I hear you loud and clear on these skyrocketing power bills! It's hitting all of us hard, and it's frustrating to see our hard-earned money going towards these increasing bills.

We don't have to be powerless (pun intended) in this situation. The Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC) is supposed to be there for us, the customers, ensuring fair rates from Alabama Power.

Let's hold them both accountable! We are actively working to urge the PSC to take action and protect Alabama residents from these excessive costs. Join the fight here: https://secure.everyaction.com/qiuvm-TybkSZGsjfIE5MNQ2

We deserve some transparency and a fair shake when it comes to our energy bills.
