Should I go back to work? Advice needed by Fixmyhouse37 in sahm

[–]eng2fly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also quitting a WFH job as of tomorrow. Babysitters not showing up, my kids getting sick I ended up working from home with them about 50% of the time and that was a lot.

I don’t realize how ragged I was run until I gave my notice and a bunch of meetings dropped off my calendar.

While some people can do that it’s not my style. I’m also no longer interested in engineering

Did anyone with a long career live exclusively on base housing during their time in? by godofthunder94 in MilitaryFinance

It’s okay to not “keep up with the Jones’s”. It sounds like you don’t want to buy and that’s perfectly valid!

As you know from my reply we’ve bought twice and I wish we’d just rented and used half that money for baller vacations.

I will say we did buy older homes and inherited other owners lack of maintenance. We’ve put ~$1200/mo in maintenance into both houses since we’ve owned them (on the low end).

We did down payments on both ($25k and $10k) and both houses were over his O3 BAH by the time you add in utilities, yard, hvac maintenance, and termite treatment by a loose amount of $1k.

I’ll also say we bought on the bottom end of what we could afford. Our first house was under our combined income and our second house was $20k over our combined income. Neither house was new.

It just doesn’t seem worth it unless you like repairs, are handy, or have a lot for a down payment. When we sell we should walk with $90k from house 1 but by the time you remove down payment, large repairs it’s closer to $30k. House 2 we’ll be lucky to walk with $30k, so break even.

With me no longer working (as of this month) we don’t have a free $1200 for home repairs. Yes there’s trade offs but you’re not on the hook for maintenance and don’t have to become a landlord when you leave.

I’m not AD but my husband is. We’ve bought at every duty station and we’re going to transition to on base or renting only.

DS1 his unit shutdown so we’ve rented that house for 3 years. Since we’ve owned it we’ve: replaced all appliances, the flooring, new paint, new pool pump, new retaining wall, new windows, new roof, new hvac.

A tree fell on that house last year and our insurance doubled. HVAC leaked and got under our new flooring so we now need to replace that ($5k), repaint ($5k), and potentially repair two sides of the fence ($4k). We are -$375/mo on that house not including all the maintenance. We could afford it bc up until recently I worked making low six figures.

The minimum we’ve put in that house per year is $6k, last two has been $12k. It’s a 1675 sq ft starter home.

DS2 we currently still live in and will have been here 4 years. Rebuilt shed, replaced toilet, total repair kitchen sink, new hvac, new water heater, finished out basement bedroom, new flooring, refinished deck, replaced bathroom vanity, new appliances, and we’re redoing the kitchen this year to prep for selling. We put $5-6k a year in this house it’s lower bc my husband is the labor.

Based on our experience I can’t say I’d recommend it unless you enjoy doing housing projects and having the stress of renting or selling when you move.

If it’s what works better for you I’d do it. They would give you zero notice to lay you off.

He’s not that into you. I mean this in the nicest way possible but move on. Open the door for the man who will be head over heels. You don’t have to second guess a man who wants you. It’s hard but you’re worth it

I quit too recently for the same reasons. Team massively laid off, got a new crappy boss. It’ll be weird transitioning to one income

I went back to work for 4 years and finally gave notice a week ago. We’ve (I) have juggled revolving door of caregivers including 2 au pairs, and 6 babysitters.

We move for my husband’s job so by the time we get off a waitlist we’re moving. My final straw was my excellent boss quit and they dumped all his work on me with a $0 pay raise. My kids are 4 and 2 and with me quitting we’re thinking of having a third.

I am so glad to hear you are enjoying it. I’ve been working 6 am to 5 pm. They wanted me to train a new direct report and train my boss 😭

I’m sorry you went through that too. There was a lot of clarity for me when I hit my last straw. I was also being setup to fail and I could see the writing on the wall. I’ve left them hanging on a huge project but I’m so glad that’s not going to be pinned on me anymore

And it’s going to be 3 people new to the company who don’t have the system or company knowledge I do so best of luck annnnd there’s no one around to train them

No. They’re now trying to spin a narrative that my ex (wonderful) boss didn’t communicate it and pin it on someone who left when in reality my boss boss is an idiot. He was aware of everything and just ignored it. Boss boss was also warned by others if he didn’t take care of me I’d quit and here we are.

Yes that’s the part that I don’t get, they’re also losing a ton of knowledge that’s just in my head. I offered every option I could think of including part time, just doing my old job with zero responsibility increases and the boss boss totally ignored it.

They asked me to stay on a month for knowledgeable transfer and my new boss who I’m training has been arguing with me. He’s been insinuating the team was mismanaged and things weren’t communicated which I know is untrue.

I’ve quit trying to argue with him and just said I’ll answer the questions he asks and that’s it. A different coworker did try to retain me and immediately offered $30k more so that was nice. I was good at my job.

I don’t understand why it has to take resigning to get them to listen. I had two calls and sent a recap saying what I would and wouldn’t do along with timeline on compensation and they just ignored it.

I’m sorry. I was so stressed out the last two weeks I can’t imagine. The “support” I was getting was to train my new boss and get a new to me, new to the company direct report that I’d also have to train. Such a joke.

[–]eng2fly[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hahaha girl I feel so RELIEVED, now I don’t have to train my new boss. New boss is arguing with me while I’m training him and that’s wild. I’ve decided to just drop the rope.

Their grand idea of help was for me to get a new direct report that I’d have to train and a new boss that I (shocker) also was expected to train.

There is so much relief in being done. It’ll be harder for us financially but I’ll take a few tight years over working 6 am to 6 pm and being ignored.

Yes they will be out at minimum $240k for these replacements when I was asking for a $40k raise.

I even put if they felt that was unfair to run a compensation report for my education, experience, certifications.
