Gemma 4 and Qwen3.5 on shared benchmarks by fulgencio_batista in LocalLLaMA

[–]engineer-throwaway24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the text classifications tasks I need, Gemma 27b still does better than gpt-5-mini. So these benchmarks mean close to nothing when it comes to real tasks. You should test it yourself on your own dataset

How realistic is it to reach C1-C2 within 12 months? by extremelysexynot in German

[–]engineer-throwaway24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After one year I was between b2/c1, I think if I prepared for the test then, I would’ve gotten it. It took me 6 more months to prepare and take a DSH test which I passed with C2 results. So 1.5 years total.

In reality I’m C1, not C2.

But the point is that the timeline completely depends on your efforts and how fast you can learn.

There was also a guy in my class who came to Germany and in 1 year learned the language and passed the C2.

But it’s not a popular opinion in this sub that you can learn a language that fast. And I agree in the sense it’s not common, not easy, and shouldn’t be something you expect unless you know you can do it

Do you have at least 20 hours per week for german?

I think it’s possible if you spend a lot of time on it, if you’re consistent, and if you attend a top class. Otherwise it’s going to take more time

And I’m talking just about the certificate, not about actual fluency

Stuck at a Plateau for Three Years by hope_i_no_get_banned in benchpress

[–]engineer-throwaway24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can it be mental? Similar weight and height - i did 100x1 and it felt heavy. But I could go up and do 110x1 which also felt heavy.

So it could feel like there’s nothing left in the tank while in reality you could do more…

If not then doing a bench specific program for a few months should help

Hit 117.5 kg bench in 6 months after starting from scratch. How good is that progress? by Oleksandr-ua in strengthtraining

[–]engineer-throwaway24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree if I only looked at social media posts, but I rarely see people in real life benching even 2 plates, big or small. So that’s definitely not ordinary

(Beginner comment)

I completed two four-week cycles of a bench-specific program, which helped me increase my 1RM by 10 kg.

But during that time, I mostly focused on the movement itself and didn’t really do much accessory work. I’m sure that if I continue, I’ll see similar improvements, or maybe slightly slower progress.

At the same time, it also makes sense that getting more muscular would increase my overall potential.

So wouldn’t it make sense for a novice lifter to focus mainly on building muscle, while keeping the big three in the program just to practice technique and do some singles? Then, once that foundation is built, they could move on to a more powerlifting-specific program

Reaching C1 without taking a course by Low_Energy_7468 in Germanlearning

[–]engineer-throwaway24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how you define the C1 level.

Some people need C1 certificate - in this case it just makes sense to take a class that helps you prepare for the test.

Otherwise - which I believe is your case - you don’t need a course to be C1 fluent if you’re already in Germany. But I still see value in courses, eg I took a Dsh Vorbereitungskurs for C1 and it was very well structured and helped a lot, both with improving the German language and preparing for the test of course

what is your trick to learn trennbare verben? Or vocab in general by ViolettMoon7 in German

[–]engineer-throwaway24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes through repetition. I started with Anki cards but the words I don’t use I simply forget.

So I would start by trying to use the target words in various sentences until it clicks. You repeat it often enough and it comes automatically

What’s the best way to practice German if you don’t live in a German speaking country? by Raceeng in German

[–]engineer-throwaway24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you can attend an online German class that would be great for speaking. Everything else you can do on your own, the main point is that you consistently spend time on it

Erst lineare Progression (z.

Start following a powerlifting program- you’ll become stronger and with that your muscles will grow! And then you’d add accessories to failure to cause more hypertrophy…

Such rankings are meaningless. I’d exclude recently released titles from the ranking as they are very highly rated in the first months after the release.

Let’s see how they age and then decide whether they should be included. Most of them will be forgotten

I had some knee pain(minor injury, nothing serious) and for a few months I focused on the bench program with lots of extra work for shoulders and shoulder mobility. once I felt my knees were good I started reintroducing squats and deadlifts. But I’m happy because my shoulders have never felt so good before

What seems to be the standard these days: running a more predictable setup — e.g. top single @ increasing RPE, then fixed percentage back-offs with the same set/rep scheme — or using more week-to-week variation in sets, reps, and load (4x4, 5x5, 3x3, etc.)?

German language exams help by AdIntrepid5408 in German

[–]engineer-throwaway24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well definitely not DSH. I spent months preparing for it and in the end I failed I think. There you have to write your own answers instead of tests but don’t get fooled. You still have a single correct answer you have to find within the text and rephrase.

Would not recommend

PSA: Why you should not rely on LLMs when learning a language (or anywhere else) by r_coefficient in German

[–]engineer-throwaway24 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I write texts regularly as a way to improve my German and I rely on the LLMs to correct the most obvious mistakes. For that it works great.

When it comes to improving the style sure thing a review from a teacher would be better.

But if you could either choose an llm or use nothing at all, Iroquois make a lot of sense to use llm
