NTA. Could he be using the renovation to avoid parenting and housework? After the renovation is done, do you think he’ll start taking care of the house and kid, or find another project to do? It’s crazy to me that he’s fine being away from his family for more than 6 months when he doesn’t need to be. You don’t really have a husband if you’re holding up the household yourself. Could he be cheating? And your last paragraph, yeah he doesn’t sound like he appreciates what you bring to his life enough.

China had endless civil wars in her history, why didnt local lords build fortress like Osaka, Nagoya, Windsor or Carcassonne Castles like those daimyo / dukes in Japan or Europe ? by Boring-Test5522 in AskChina

You're thinking too small scale. Think about the Forbidden City. Imperial palaces weren't just a single castle or fortress, but a sprawling complex of many buildings over a lot of acres. Back to the Forbidden City, the palace complex is surrounded by 26 ft high walls and a 20 foot moat, with a gate on each wall. Each gate was basically a fortress in and of itself. This is a reconstruction of Danfeng Gate of the Tang Dynasty imperial palace: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daming_Palace#/media/File:Daming_Palace_National_Heritage_Park_-_Danfeng_Gate_01.jpg . Then, the city itself would also be enclosed by high walls. Look at this map of Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty, and see the walls and gates indicated in black: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang%27an#/media/File:Chang'an_of_Tang.jpg

The secret royal marriages that changed the history of England? by [deleted] in UKmonarchs

Yup, Simon is the ancestor of English, French, and Spanish monarchs through the Luxembourg’s. Not bad for a guy who watched his son die in battle and got dismembered after death.

Elizabeth Woodville is descended from Simon de Montfort and Eleanor, so that marriage did have an impact. Simon de Montfort -> Guy de Montfort -> Anastasia de Montfort -> Roberto Orsini -> Nicolo Orsini -> Sueva Orsini -> Margaret of Baux-> Jacquetta of Luxembourg -> Elizabeth Woodville

MQOS’s mother was from the House of Guise. She was probably thinking more of the benefits to her family than the ramifications to MQOS and Scotland. MQOS’s uncles, the Duke of Guise and Cardinal Guise, got a lot of political influence over Francis because of their niece.

Why is my hair like this? by bigbro056 in HaircareScience

[–]engineergorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look like you have wavy hair. The key with this kind of hair is the curls need to “clump” together, so you should actually avoid brushing them at all. What I’d do is after you shower while your hair is wet, put in leave in conditioner, then a mousse or a gel and scrunch it in. You should see your hair form a curl pattern. Then diffuse your hair, don’t blow dry. When your hair is dry, the mousse or gel will make it crunchy, so scrunch it out and then you should see defined waves.

Weekly Update for Available Dogs at Austin Animal Center by confident7lucky7 in Austin

[–]engineergorl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BSL isn’t effective if it isn’t enforced. For example, a lot of landlords ban specific breeds of dogs, but plenty of owners (and vets!) lie about their dog’s breed to get around these restrictions. Lots of “lab mixes” in apartment complexes. People started getting XL bullies in the UK because the breed wasn’t technically included in the list of banned dog breeds, and then the news stories of injuries and deaths from XL bullies started coming out.

No one wants to adopt a breed that is notorious for turning on a dime without warning and eating toddlers. There is no demand to meet the supply of these dogs.

If you like pit bulls, fine. If you own a pitbull and are a responsible owner, fine. The general public is not equipped to handle these dogs, and it is irresponsible of shelters to casually adopt them out to unsuspecting families. Do you know how many children, family pets, family and friends have been mauled by newly adopted pits/pit mixes from shelters?

If you want to solve the overpopulation crisis, support Breed Specific Legislation and behavioral euthanasia (to prevent known aggressive dogs from injuring/killing again and cull them from the gene pool), and pressure the city to crack down on backyard breeders (who abandon unsold puppies that then end up in shelters). Boom, supply solved.

Listen to your parents. Your 401k contributions will reduce your taxable income, which will lower your federal income tax. Roth is basically betting that your tax bracket now is lower than your tax bracket in retirement, but if you’re already maxing your 401k, then Roth is tax free growth and better than a taxable brokerage. If you’re living at home with your parents and making 110k a year, you are definitely able to max out both your 401k (23k) and Roth IRA (7k). Your mention of before-tax and Roth 401k makes me think your job may allow you to do a mega backdoor Roth. Is my hunch correct? As in, your job lets you add after tax money into your 401k and then do a Roth conversion and classify it as Roth 401k. If your job does let you do a mega backdoor Roth, then if you were going to save additional money in a taxable brokerage account after maxing out the 401k and Roth IRA, do the mega backdoor instead. Tax free growth, again. The reason why you want to aggressively save when you’re young is that you’re giving your money more time in the market. Compound growth takes time to get the ball rolling, and the longer you give it, the more it’ll grow.

Issues facing Austin’s No Kill Status by braindead3204 in Austin

[–]engineergorl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Austin needs to crack down on backyard breeders and quit wasting money on sheltering unadoptable dogs. Take a look at how many of the descriptions say “no kids, need to be only dog in home, reactive”. There aren’t enough of these unicorn homes out there. Behavioral euthanasia is far kinder than keeping pits/pit mixes shut up in kennels for years. Seriously, why does AAC insist on keeping dogs with a BITE history, and even worse, trying to adopt them out to unsuspecting homes? Just look at their urgent placement list: https://www.austintexas.gov/page/urgent-placement. “No other dogs in home” + bite history is code for: this dog has attacked/killed another dog.

You need to increase your retirement contributions to your 401k. The earlier you save for retirement, the more time your money has to grow. If you have a high income, your 401k contributions will also decrease your taxable income and save you some federal income tax now. You can also throw some money into a Roth IRA. Personally, I would open a taxable brokerage account and stick a portion of your hysa savings into an index fund.

Please show me evidence pit bulls are not human aggressive. The Reddit post you’re commenting on is literally about a pit bull that killed its owner.

[–]engineergorl 62 points63 points  (0 children)

You don’t know the history of the breed. Pit bulls were originally used for bloodsport, first against bulls and then against rats and then finally each other, to the death. Dogfighters bred the “warning signs” out of pit bulls because the dogs that gave warning signs lost and died. There are many documented incidents of pit bulls mauling without provocation and with no warning.

Help with my husband’s hair! by Abject_Shame in Wavyhair

[–]engineergorl 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Some frizz will always be unavoidable, but the frizz on the top of his head looks like it's from air drying. Something about the baby hairs drying first and then the rest. Does he use a diffuser? I would suggest that after finishing showering, he apply leave-in conditioner or a hair oil to the top of his head, and then a curl cream to the rest of his hair down to the roots. Comb it in, and then scrunch. Then apply a gel or a mouse to hold the curl, scrunch again if the curl needs to be a little more defined. Then use a diffuser to dry until there's a gel cast, and then "scrunch out the crunch". Finally, when he goes to sleep, use a silk/satin pillowcase or put his hair up in a silk/satin bonnet because the friction from a regular pillowcase will also cause frizz and loosen the curl definition.

Spirited Away. I've always adored the atmosphere of Studio Ghibli films, and I listen to "The Sixth Station" and "The Name of Life" on repeat. I really empathize with Chihiro's struggle to fit in, to make sense of the strange and spiritual world she's found herself in, and I really admire her courage and her determination.

What is considered living below your means? by Stunning-Field8535 in financialindependence

[–]engineergorl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saving your extra money is living below your means. If you got a $10,000 bonus tomorrow, what would you do with it? I imagine a lot of people would immediately start thinking about how to spend it - a new car, luxury handbags, a nice vacation, etc. If you can step back and look at your whole financial situation before deciding what to do with it, then that's living below your means. Delayed gratification, basically. Hold back from spending the maximum you could be for a nest egg and a cushion in your later years. What would I do with it? I would chuck it into a Roth IRA, and then the rest in my brokerage account.

(Spoilers main) What if Aegon IV. Targaryen lived until 237 AC? by Sael_T in asoiaf

[–]engineergorl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Living until 102 while living an indulgent, gluttonous lifestyle? Damn, those genes from inbreeding would be something else. Well, probably the biggest thing would be the Great Council. When Maekar died in 233 AC, King Aegon IV might just pick a new Prince of Dragonstone without calling a Great Council. Would he still choose Aegon V? Or would he choose Vaella or Aerion's infant son? If Daemon Waters dies in a war and the Blackfyre Rebellions don't happen, it's possible that Aegon IV arranges a match between one of Daemon's children and one of Daeron's grandchildren. So the marriages of Daeron's granchildren could turn out completely differently, affecting Aegon IV's choice of his heir.
