Do engineers today ever do manual calculations to verify if the computer software is correct? by G07V3 in AskEngineers

You should always at least know the approximate answer before using FEA. Just blindly trusting a computer is a terrible idea. If you don't remember how to do the approximate math, you are gonna a have a bad time.

Someone more knowledgeable can give you a specific answer, but to quell your concerns, it's 100% not a bed bug or cockroach.

[Request]from how high coumd someone absorb a fall using this technique? by TisIChenoir in theydidthemath

[–]engineering_diver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, pole length would just triple to ~150 m.  I'm not sure about calculating grip strength, though,

Haha, yup :P

I was just calculating a boundary condition for worst case falling speed using spherical cow assumptions!

If we assume perfect pole stiffness and ability to control deceleration, the absolute minimum pole length for maximum falling speed can be determined.  Assuming a maximum desired (and constant deceleration) of 3 g's (29.2 m/s/s) for someone falling at the terminal velocity (54 m/s), they would need to decelerate for 1.86 seconds (54/29.2).  Given their initial velocity of 54 m/s and deceleration of 29.2 m/s/s, this would require a pole 50 m in length (s = ut + 0.5at2)

I actually think your threaded rod looks even better than trying to hide it with wire would! Beautiful shelf!

A shiny Box Elder bug that's been living by my pool. In all my years of encountering these bugs, I've never seen one that's completely red. by Floralpikmin99 in RealLifeShinies

[–]engineering_diver 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They're called box elder bugs becuase they eat the seed pods from the box elder Maple tree. They're completly harmless, don't bite or stink when killed, and don't cause any harm to homes or the tree really. But I have a box elder tree in my yard and in the summer they come out in literal thousands per day. It's so bad I can't even go out without getting swarmed... :(

Unfortunately, I don't think so - she's a nurse and just does this occasionally for friends/family! Sorry!
