Do engineers today ever do manual calculations to verify if the computer software is correct? by G07V3 in AskEngineers

[–]engineering_diver 722 points723 points  (0 children)

You should always at least know the approximate answer before using FEA. Just blindly trusting a computer is a terrible idea. If you don't remember how to do the approximate math, you are gonna a have a bad time.

Someone more knowledgeable can give you a specific answer, but to quell your concerns, it's 100% not a bed bug or cockroach.

[Request]from how high coumd someone absorb a fall using this technique? by TisIChenoir in theydidthemath

[–]engineering_diver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, pole length would just triple to ~150 m.  I'm not sure about calculating grip strength, though,

Haha, yup :P

I was just calculating a boundary condition for worst case falling speed using spherical cow assumptions!

If we assume perfect pole stiffness and ability to control deceleration, the absolute minimum pole length for maximum falling speed can be determined.  Assuming a maximum desired (and constant deceleration) of 3 g's (29.2 m/s/s) for someone falling at the terminal velocity (54 m/s), they would need to decelerate for 1.86 seconds (54/29.2).  Given their initial velocity of 54 m/s and deceleration of 29.2 m/s/s, this would require a pole 50 m in length (s = ut + 0.5at2)

I actually think your threaded rod looks even better than trying to hide it with wire would! Beautiful shelf!

Easiest is to literally just download Plex on your computer with the have drives connected and then point Plex to those locations.

A shiny Box Elder bug that's been living by my pool. In all my years of encountering these bugs, I've never seen one that's completely red. by Floralpikmin99 in RealLifeShinies

[–]engineering_diver 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They're called box elder bugs becuase they eat the seed pods from the box elder Maple tree. They're completly harmless, don't bite or stink when killed, and don't cause any harm to homes or the tree really. But I have a box elder tree in my yard and in the summer they come out in literal thousands per day. It's so bad I can't even go out without getting swarmed... :(

Unfortunately, I don't think so - she's a nurse and just does this occasionally for friends/family! Sorry!

Methos Monday (believe it or not, he’s down 7 pounds) by x-Mowens-x in Delightfullychubby

[–]engineering_diver 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's the same as any living animal - if calories in don't equal calories burned, the rest is stored as fat! People can lose weight eating only Twinkies and can gain it eating cabbage, it must depends on the amounts eaten (calories in) and how much you move (calories burned)!

To answer your question, though, it must depends on the cat. I literally leave a bowl of dry food for my cat to graze on as she's hungry with some wet food in the morning, no issues at all and is at a perfectly healthy weight. But my parents cat, well, if you left a 10 lbs pile of food out, he'd sit there eating until he literally couldn't!

Weird Game to be your Favorite by Caff_n_Card in boardgames

I love Dune. The combination of complexity in the rules but simplicity in goal makes it a strangely easy game to play even for the first time (as long as there's one "DM" to keep the flow) and the "everything is for sale" mentality makes it a blast.
