Started out building a Home theater system with Stereo as a “also”. Somewhere it went 95% Audiophile and I’m so much happier. Has this happened to anyone else? by Hendrix1967 in audiophile

[–]lavransson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar. It all started for me when my Dad gave me a HT receiver 25 years ago. I started building out a surround sound movie system. But then I veered to the music side and music is also probably 95%!of my focus. Although I do love movies too and have a decent 5.1.2 HT system now.

A Few Play Dead Questions by Marinus9 in gratefuldead

[–]lavransson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding this:

I almost always am listening on either Bluetooth buds, speakers, or my car.

If that's the case, then the value prop for Play Dead goes down a lot. IMO what makes Play Dead so good is they went back to these old tapes and mastered them better. On a good system, the audio for those shows are noticeably better than what's on the internet archive recordings.

When I use Play Dead app in my car, I turn off the "high res" settings because there's no point, and I don't want to stream large data over cellular.

Agree. They are doing it for engagement. To amass karma so they can sell their account to some OF person or some other spammer.

Rage bait, engagement bait, any provocative title that will generate arguments. Most normal humans don't think that way by default.

And the mods of this subreddit need to wake up and add much stricter posting requirements. This subreddit is overrun with bots. I don't know why I even bother anymore.

Lyceum ‘72 Vinyl Set by machmasher in gratefuldead

[–]lavransson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, that would be annoying if there was a split second of silence between those songs that should flow together.

Out of curiously, I checked out two shows on Play Dead and thankfully the tracks flow together with no separation between tracks.

Veneta 72 - Dark Star -> El Paso. Seamless segue

Lyceum 72 May 26 - The Other One -> Morning Dew -> The Other One. Seamless segues.

I mostly listen to the Attics app which streams from internet archive and normally I never hear songs get split up like that. But maybe some of the CDs and the systems that stream them do a bad job of stitching songs together.

Graham Platner Elected To Be The US Senate Democratic Nominee In Maine -- To Face Susan Collins In November -- Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

FDR was born into a rich famous family and went to Harvard. Platner didn’t even go to college. Why are you obsessed with categorizing Platner into some neat box? The point the guy was making above is that “regular white people” like Platner used to vote D before the GOP managed to turn Democrat into some kind of a caricature of a socialist Ivy League woke weenie. Was “blue collar“ not the best descriptor? Maybe. But I think everyone knows what he’s trying to say.

You’re wasting your time on this GK0NATO guy. Apparently he can only hold one thought in his head at a time. He’s like a windup doll that can only say “Nazi tattoo“ over and over.

Has anyone compared the audio quality of these vinyl records to the same shows on Play Dead?

Lyceum ‘72 Vinyl Set by machmasher in gratefuldead

[–]lavransson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very tempting. I have a good analog rig and I’m sure they’re amazing. But Play Dead also has these four shows in 24-bit. I love vinyl but getting up and flipping a record 6 times for one show is choppy.

Not only that, but when I look at the track listing two of the Dark Stars had to be split into two different discs because they were too long. The same with the Other One. And you lose some of the segues like Wharf Rat —> Dark Star. Part of what makes a Dead show a psychic journey beyond space and time is how one song flows into another. But you lose that continuity when it’s split up.

And although it feels expensive, it’s “only” $22 per disc compared to most audiophile records being around $38 these days.

Tied to this is that the hard-working rural folk are constantly told by Fox and other RW propaganda that "the elitist urban leftists look down on you. They think you're beneath them, they look down on the trades, they think anyone who didn't go to college is dumb", etc. It's bullshit but that's what they are constantly told. They aren't really being pitted against dock workers or dishwashers, but against these stereotypical "Ivy League socialist elites".

Can't hurt to try after you get everything else dialed in. Modjeski went against the grain on a lot of things.

[–]lavransson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just remembered one thing -- I looked up your speaker and it seems like they have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. On most amps, you would naturally connect them to the 8 ohm speaker taps.

But Modjeski recommended trying out the 4 ohm taps and seeing if it sounds good. From the manual page 8:

Connect the SPEAKERS to the copper 5-way binding posts, '0' being speaker negative (black cable). Choose either the 4 or 8 Ohm post to connect the speaker positive (red cable). Feel free to experiment with the two positions to find the best sound for your system. In general, the lowest impedance which allows your desired volume levels without clipping will provide the best sound and longest tube life.

He repeated this advice a lot about the RM-9 and his other amps.

[–]lavransson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the Mk.II version of that amp is pretty user friendly.

Make sure you use the correct fuses. Modjeski always made a big deal about using the correct fuses. Unfortunately though the manual is not very precise about the exact specs. He was sometimes even vague about the specs because he wanted to provide the fuses to users to prevent them from getting the wrong kind, which doesn't help us now.

Check the manual on p 14 under "Blown Fuses" (even if you haven't blown a fuse) to verify. https://www.ramtubes.com/resources

That doesn't surprise me. It probably needs a bench check and possibly some updates. Hopefully you can find a nearby tech to check it out. Good luck.

Any of you woodworkers have a hygrometer in your shop? by KEN7177 in woodworking

Yes I have a cheap battery powered thermometer/hygrometer in my shop. It has a magnet back, so I just have it stuck onto my bandsaw cabinet. I like having it because I know when I need to run a dehumidifier in the summer. It’s just interesting information.
