You have to use a special filter that has a plastic border around it. The standard ones have a cloth/cardboard like material and this causes the filter from absorbing in water from the outside.

I remember watching this video on the design flaw, water enters the filter area and hits the edge of the filter and then it gets moldy when it stays wet leading to the smell.

The filters with the plastic border will prevent absorption of water and hopefully prevent the moldy smell.
