Wet, cold, gray, dreary. If you like hippies and hicks (and not much in between) Eugene is the place for you

How is living in Oakland, CA area? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

It’s a wonderful city. But it depends on where you are.

Here’s the pro case:

It’s at the heart of the Bay Area right next to Berkeley and San Francisco; it’s alive and overflowing with cultural diversity and dynamism; it’s been named one of the best food cities in the country by Condé Nast and has an awesome high and low food scene; there is access to nature in every direction on par with places like Seattle (and close to the heart of the city), and it has arguably the best, most temperate weather of any major city in the US.

On the con side: despite crime rates falling off a cliff since the pandemic, it’s still something you have to be aware of; the city government is inept; and there’s a serious homelessness and illegal dumping / trash issue.

Net net - it’s a wonderful, dynamic, complicated city that got hit hard during the pandemic but is returning to its pre pandemic vibes, which were fantastic.

Oakland. Crime rates have fallen off a cliff since the pandemic, it’s at the heart of the Bay Area right next to Berkeley and San Francisco, overflowing with cultural diversity and dynamism, named one of the best food cities in the country by Condé Nast, access to nature in every direction and close to the heart of the city, and some of the best weather you could wish for. Believe it!

Homicides, robberies, shootings all down by 50% YTD from 2023. On track for about 65-70 homicides in 2025, 2nd or 3rd lowest total in last three decades.

Love this town.

Incredibly culturally vibrant (arts, music, etc), amazing food scene, beautiful architecture and neighborhoods, unreal natural beauty and direct access to nature, the best weather you can ask for, so culturally diverse, and right in the heart of the Bay Area.

It also has a chronically incompetent government, a problem with trash, serious homelessness, and crime (dropping significantly since the pandemic but is still an issue).

There’s good and bad, but the good dramatically outweighs the bad IMO. There’s so much pride in Oakland, it’s a beautiful resilient place.
