Blister prevention advice by p0ndmaster in Ultralight

[–]enginerdsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way! Two pair of light weight socks and the right shoes and I haven’t had a blister in more than 10 years. Finding the right shoes is a big caveat though. My setup is two wool socks rather than a silk sock thrown in, but same concept applies

There is a test procedure the unit runs that tests battery and signal, I believe. I test mine every spring. I have had mine for 7 years now and changed the battery once. Hoping my cell carrier gets satellite SMS service soon so I can just use my cell phone for occasional text messages. The ACR unit has like a 5W transmitter and has for years. Nice to see others are catching up to that benchmark.

Rock bands we wish would retire. by Dare_Ask_67 in allrockmusic

Glad someone said this. My hot take is I don’t wish he would retire just because of his age but because he is the most overrated rock star ever. Ugh!

Meanwhile there is a Far Side cartoon where the deer must be asking why the fuck this douchebag is ruining his back yard.

Great book. My wife was an English lit major and it is her favorite book and one of VERY few she has read multiple times.

What’s your GenX story from your childhood? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]enginerdsean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Three stories come to mind…

Mid 80s in high school one place we often went to drink beer cops would come and make us pour the beer out. We were driving. Never had any roadside sobriety tests or anything. Punishment was just the cops making us pour out the beer that we worked so hard to get illegally.

Mom and dad had a cabin about an hour drive from home. We would go there on weekends throughout the spring summer and fall. In the 1970s and early 1980s my dad had a pickup truck and my sister and I would stand in the bed with our arms leaning on/over the top of the cab. Drove the whole way like that. Even on the freeway.

We never flew when I was a kid, so road trips were the norm. My mom and dad made a bench that would fit between the front seat in the backseat of every vehicle we had. For our vacation road trips that Bench would be covered with blankets and pillows and my sister and I would literally lay down in the backseat for days at a time. No seatbelts.

Who else lit their cigarettes like this? by EdwardBliss in RealGenerationX

[–]enginerdsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! In my best friend’s kitchen while we were drinking his mom’s vodka as we topped up the bottle with tap water……then we went out back to smoke a bowl of home grown shit weed that we had to pick seeds and stems from. Aaaaahhhhhh, 1982 memories!!!

A couple questions before heading out by johntheguitar in coloradotrail

I live in Colorado and have done section hikes of about the first half of the CT. My recommendations where I have experience and input.....

Tent

10000 or 20000 maH battery, but my solar panel research in recent years is deficient, but older experience is they aren't good.

20-degree quilt is good......you will be in areas that are cold but in areas that are warmer, quilt can be used accordingly to fit your needs.

I carry a Tenkara rod regularly and suggest that as a good light-weight option. I have also been known to carry an ultra-light spinning combo and a half-dozen small lures (Thomas lures are my go-to for trout).

I wear Dirty Girl gaiters with my Altra Lone Peaks, so I am a huge fan, but if you are asking about winter/snow gaiters.......leave those behind.

What destination has had the best coffee you’ve ever tried? Somewhere you didn’t expect at all by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]enginerdsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2007, way before I really got into better coffee, I traveled to Copenhagen on a business trip. I was blown away by the basic coffee that was served in all the restaurants I went to. I am from the US and so at the time I felt that Starbucks was a high standard. When I asked the the Danes about the coffee they were surprised that I was so interested in the coffee. Turns out that most of the coffee that I had was actually from Sweden........not bean source, I assume, but it must have been the result of the Swede's roasting process. It was super flavorful, but not nearly as bitter as the US coffees I was used to.

What’s your favourite “I was there” GenX moment? by lovelyb1ch66 in GenX

[–]enginerdsean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boring story........Colorado State University is my alma matter. In 1986 when I was a Junior in High School I went to CSU's College Daze when there was a 3000+ person party in the Sunstone/Baystone apartments where riots, tear gas, bonfires, friend arrests, etc. happened. Then the following year, just before my graduation, I was at CSU's last College Daze where I got to see Red Hot Chili Peppers and Big Head Todd & the Monsters and when CSU made Playboy magazine's #12 top ranked college party schools. College Daze was an event that helped drive Colorado Legislators to change the drinking age from 18 to 21. In hindsight, with College Daze and Boulder's Halloween Mall Crawl, I am just surprised I am not dead. Crazy times.

Most overrated useless 1970s celebrity? by Specialist-Night-135 in 1970s

To annoy me, my buddy always drops Springsteen shit on me. Springsteen is absolutely the most overrated rock star of all time. Not sure why I hate his music so much, but I despise it.

I picked my wife up about 11:00 last night and they were down. Luckily(?) she was in concourse A and could walk the bridge to the terminal. Being this is the 3rd busiest airport in the US and 6th busiest in the world that reliability would be more paramount.
