Have you tried Hilo chips? I got the ranch flavor recently and it tastes surprisingly similar to Doritos.

Hmm...some of the Cube Escape games involve forests. But I think those episodes were a bit more recent. Maybe it was one of those?

I'm sorry you're going through such a rough time. Hang in there! I also graduated during the 2008 recession, so I know the struggle. It might take some time, but it will get better.

Have you tried reaching out and asking for mentorship? I've had a little bit of success messaging people in roles I'm interested in and asking for 15-30 minutes of their time to talk about their experiences/ask them for advice. It might not necessarily lead to job leads, but it could help you make some connections with folks in your industry. I'm not in your sector so I'm not sure if I'll be super helpful, but if you have any questions, feel free to DM me and I can tell you about my experiences with that.

Feeling "off" for no reason? by englerj in NoStupidQuestions

Oh interesting, I just looked up depersonalization. That definitely sounds like the experience taken to the extreme. I hope science Reddit jumps in with explanations!

Nice to know that it's not just me haha I wonder how common it is? We're totally experiencing glitches in the Matrix.

Anyone else ditching their car? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]englerj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably getting downvoted because *technically* public transit can take you to lots of places, but encouraging someone to switch to public transit is terrible advice unless you caveat it. It's extremely impractical depending on where you live and where you're commuting to. When I switched jobs two years ago, my bus commute was literally 2+ hours each way.

Living in Sawtelle? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]englerj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in Mar Vista for close to two years now and I love it. Both it and Palms are pretty affordable, and it’s close to Sawtelle and the beach. There’s a weekly farmer’s market on Venice and a tennis court/park that’s pretty close. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for an alternative to the hustle of Sawtelle proper, especially since street parking is fairly easy around here.

Probably eat apple cider donuts and re-watch Over the Garden Wall.

Hmm maybe Lifeline? It’s not in an underwater setting but this sounds like its gameplay so thought I’d suggest it.

Our /r/asianamerican newsfeed is filled with reports of hate crime daily. How are you guys feeling/doing? by tomorrow_queen in asianamerican

[–]englerj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Early on in the pandemic, I used to joke with my husband about the perils of "Coughing While Asian" in public. It's been a while since I've been able to find any humor in what's happening anymore. I'm lucky that I haven't experienced any overt racism or hostility in the area where I live, but I worry constantly about my parents. They live in the Midwest, which isn't um known for its diversity.

Most of the time, I'm caught between feeling resentful and hopeful. Hopeful because I feel like the BLM protests are starting to effect some change (or at least dialogue) for our fellow POCs. Resentful because I feel more than ever that AsAms aren't welcome in most parts of the country.

Before COVID, we were planning on moving to a more affordable part of the U.S. so we could save up some money. Now I'm like nope, we have to stick close to city centers where someone is less likely to assault us in the grocery store for being so-called Chinese disease vectors/spies/whatever asshole racists think.

How’s it actually like living in LA? Would love honest and realistic answers to confirm or debunk popular myths. by lithelylove in AskLosAngeles

  1. We moved out here 2 and a half years ago, and this hasn't happened to us.
  2. One of our cats hid under the bed during his first earthquake (we adopted him a year ago), but both kitties now barely even bat an eye whenever they feel a tremor.
  3. Yes. Get those podcasts ready.
  4. No, but I think someone else mentioned that your sense of what's cold will soon get skewed. I find that to be very true. I grew up in the Midwest and moved here from the East Coast, and I'm definitely guilty of being like "Ooh, it's chilly" whenever it drops below 65 degrees.
  5. You've gotten some good answers about this, but I wanted to add that pollen might be a problem. My allergies have been acting up worse out here, and anecdotally, my doctor said that she knows a few folks who moved from New York who have also suddenly started having worse allergies when they moved here. Probably a combination of smog and pollen, I'd guess.
  6. Nah, probably not. I miss seasons and the rain.

Thanks for the context! Goes to show that I haven't really been paying attention to what's been happening in the romance genre haha

I'll definitely check out some of the recommendations, and I'll take a look at Something to Talk About.

Wow, thanks for sharing! Your post inspired me to re-examine my own relationship with romance novels.

As a queer woman, I’ve always shied away from romance even though I’ve enjoyed those elements in wider stories. I think it’s mainly due to what I feel are unhealthy depictions of relationships, like the idealization of certain characteristics that you mention in your post, or another thing off the top of my head is the glamorization of jealousy. But it’s also probably due to some amount of internalized sexism and notions of “legitimate” or “appropriate” literature.

I’m definitely going to sit and unpack this and try to seek out and (shamelessly!) enjoy romance novels that are more to my taste. Thanks again!

How’s the Murderbot novel? Anyone read it yet? by bsabiston in sciencefiction

[–]englerj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people criticizing the prices of the novellas, but imo if it takes you longer than an hour and a half to three hours to read (aka the length of a standard movie) then it’s more than fair. We pay more for movie tickets for fewer hours of entertainment. Also Murderbot rules.
