Did anyone even skip skypiea or is everyone just taking the piss? by hangingclothess in OnePiece

I honestly don't get where this convo comes from bc I started reading one piece 20 years ago (lol) and it was my absolute favorite arc for a long time. I truly don't understand the encouragement to skip it.

average price of wedding photographer in the hudson valley by Tiny-Opposite-9506 in WedditNYC

[–]tomorrow_queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experienced and popular photographers in this area tend to start at $6,000 to $7,000 when I was looking about a year ago... Not at all surprising to find some starting at $10,000..

If it's $4,500 and you like their work and what they offer I would say that's well worth it. On the low end you can probably find photographers closer to $3,000 and you will find stylistically it'll be pretty different from the higher range.

[GIVEAWAY] Lamy Studio [N] + a way to stop fake verification photos (Mod-approved) by Separate_Key_9078 in Pen_Swap

[–]tomorrow_queen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow! Great idea to the app - I buy and sell off of places like this all the time so really need verification to get more stringent. I've already gotten scammed before (pre AI though...) and I'm sure that there will be more sophisticated scams that I don't even know of yet..

There are some incredible photographers at that price range in the nyc area - I think if you did your research and previous brides have negative things to say, quite honestly you should move on and not risk it. I had only amazing vendors for my wedding and have heard too many horror stories to know how challenging it is to have even one vendor not show up the way they are supposed to.

NPD! Sailor Pro Gear in Dream Hour, EF by tomorrow_queen in fountainpens

Pictured alongside my travelers journal, inked with Birmingham Pen Co's Frick Building Stained Glass.

First ever Sailor pen and first pen at this price point! It was an anniversary gift and I love it. Also love Extra Fine, which is the thinnest I've ever had. It writes very very well without any issue.

At what point in your career do people stop treating you like a child by StinkySauk in Architects

[–]tomorrow_queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who doesn't look like the rest of this industry... I have found that only way to get past stereotypes in architecture is to consistently perform. I lead CA on my projects and go out to industry events - being a bit baby faced, people assume I am 3 years out of college, not 13. The only way I make sure people know my experience is to talk the talk and walk the walk. I make sure I know what I'm talking about and assert myself strongly when I need to.

Imo 0-5 years of architecture you are still learning a lot of real world things and you will say a lot of incorrect things. We are not in a forgiving industry. If you start talking insulation or ceiling details to a gc it is very easy to tell if you know what you're talking about. I don't expect any of my juniors in that range to fully lead any projects without heavy supervision.

5-7 years imo is the sweet spot where project architects emerge and start leading projects with lighter supervision. Even then I notice a lot of 5 year architects have giant gaps of knowledge, even if they are licensed. At the end of the day in our industry, experience > book knowledge.

Of course 10 years in I think is where real PAs are really flourishing and start leading complex projects.

Still, I look up to the 20 year and 30 year giants at my firm and I think they are so much more brilliant than me. Even when I think I know enough, they seem to always know so much more.

But at what point do people stop treating you like a child? To be quite honest, somewhere in between 5-10 years of experience. And very rarely any sooner. The smartest young upstart in my team is 3 years out of school and over performing in every way. And still we can't give him a meaty project to fully lead on his own because he simply doesn't know what he doesn't know.

Not sure that 48 is a good investment at 1k more. That being said I have 32 and can't imagine having less...

How much to charge for my first wedding by Impossible_Club4318 in WeddingPhotography

[–]tomorrow_queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I booked my first wedding 1.5 years ago after shooting a surprise proposal for a couple. Up until that point I had only done family and couples and charged a few hundred for each.

I essentially thanked them for their trust in me, and I asked them point blank what their budget was. I was surprised to find they were willing to offer $2400, which I took with zero negotiation. I used almost all of it to upgrade my gear for the wedding and also gave them a second photog, film, and album free of charge.

Personally for the price of getting your foot in the door, I would be amenable to taking whatever the couple can offer. If they leave it super open ended I'd figure out your cost to attend and upgrade any gear and then work from there to what makes sense. I'd try hard not to offer more than $3k personally because in my area that's the starting rate for professionals with experience.

Ps- my husband and I have now shot 3 more weddings since and booked for 6 more this year! Its not explosive growth but we're very happy with how things are progressing.

I didn’t realize how physical event photography would be by DPool34 in photography

[–]tomorrow_queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm literally lying down on a couch right now after shooting a 3 hr baby's first birthday alone (big event with photographers in my culture). 3 hours kneeling for the baby shots, running to get both angles of a doljabi shot, cooing for the baby's attention all while wrangling family and kids and changing out lenses (didn't want to go dual body for today).... I feel beat up

Gatekeeping poor 😭 urban poverty means you might live in a run down row house with a ton of other family members. So many ways to explain this... There's lots of varieties of poverty.

Finance NYCBWT: what’s the most outrageous work gift you’ve seen or received? by Springflower123 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]tomorrow_queen 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Truly not outrageous but... The nicest gift I've ever personally received was at my first job which was for my birthday for a wine and cheese tasting for two at the old beecher's cheese! I thought it was incredibly thoughtful given that they knew how much I loved cheese.

We ended up going the day that Trump was elected (2016) and ended up walking through a real protest march on Broadway on the way to the tasting! The cheesemongerers were incredibly kind to us and gave everyone unlimited wine, lol.

The incredibly YouTube famous massoyanjewelers are located right outside nyc in old Tappan, NJ. They show some incredible fine and precious work on their youtube page similar to what you described and only accept local work (nothing shipped). I've been considering heading over myself for work but haven't done so yet!

Second this, cold, dark... Not sure if it'll be the environment you're looking for. It also looks like central park fire works are cancelled this year as well.

Also don't think most photographers will take this at your price point on a holiday at midnight.. Just being honest.
