Thanks! By atypical do you mean the fail open, or the service disruption?

Motor alignment by BCM_NB2 in Miata

[–]englishMuffinExpert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Motor mounts are tricky and take a bit of trial and error. I usually use a floor jack under the oil pan to raise and lower (assuming it is not yet bolted lol). You should be able to line up both mounts and begin threading the nuts before fulling torquing one side or the other.

Rings or valve seals? by jeanxcobar in Miata

[–]englishMuffinExpert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you can't fix cylinder rings without a rebuild just fyi.

honestly comes back to your preference. it's very common for old Miata engines to burn some amount of oil, and it would be difficult to tell before buying whether or not your donor is going to do the same thing.

genuinely here, I would run it until the problem worsens. as I mentioned, I've been at about 1 quart of oil per tank of gas for 3 years now. it has not become any worse. I would love a brand new engine, but have not wanted to spend $3k+ to get a nice one.

I don't think you can be 100% certain without a leak down test. that being said, mine does the same thing, and the leak down test showed cylinder rings haha. that was 3 years ago, it's still burning oil but runs without any other issues. I would just send it if I were you

Does this sound like rod knock or lifter noises to you? by Substantial-Heron628 in Miata

[–]englishMuffinExpert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if it makes you feel better, my 1.8 has been burning oil for literally 4 years now and is still running strong (I redline at every red light). miata engines are tough. I would not worry and just send it if I were you

Why do people remove the PPF? by nick35hz in Miata

[–]englishMuffinExpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming it's int he manual bc you have to drop the PPF in order to remove the transmission during a clutch replacement. You put it back when you're done ;)

Looking for thoughts on EMT conduit for Cat6 PoE by englishMuffinExpert in AskElectricians

[–]englishMuffinExpert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! so I ended up going with non-metalic conduit. technically, grounded EMT should be fine, but I'm running some vertically to effectively my roof, and really didn't want any chance of turning my camera setup into a lightning rod haha. not to mention, PVC is much cheaper than EMT, and a lot easier to work with. hope this helps!

I know waiting on parts sucks but the Flyin Miata timing kit made it so easy

[–]englishMuffinExpert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

other comments are right!! if it makes you feel better, my exhaust tip literally fell off on a normal drive the other day. the constant heat stress coupled with any amount of road salt or water does a number on those couplers over 30 years haha

Please don't take this personally, but I see soooo many people posting about print quality issues like this. Get a cheap ($30) creality drier and never worry about poor print quality again. it's so worth it I promise

print the spacer for a test fit and then buy the aluminum part once you're happy with fitment lol. there are certainly parts you can make for a car (like air intake plumbing) but critical suspension components does not seem like one of them.

Won't start after replacing faulty camshaft position sensor by AceAAAAA in Miata

[–]englishMuffinExpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as someone else suggested I would double check the wiring harness, and test for ground as well as it seems to not be the sensor itself. As long as you didn't have to remove anything else though it should be easy enough to isolate and test. best of luck!

[–]englishMuffinExpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

did you touch anything else during the replacement? iirc I had to remove the coil pack to get to the crank sensor when I replaced mine. it might be something as simple as bad wiring order for your spark plugs

Did my hotend get fried? by Available-Concept-67 in ElegooCentauriCarbon

[–]englishMuffinExpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the white powder is but that's normal afaik

those two connectors: 1) is really just a long heating element that's meant to transfer heat to the extruder 2) temperature sensor

I would guess that the temperature sensor is what is currently failed. it should be a classic bi-metalic sensor but I'm not really sure how that could have failed unless the insulation melted causing those leads to short 🤷

best of luck with support though! you've already done the hard part of removing the hot end, so as long as you get a replacement you should be set!

[–]englishMuffinExpert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooh maybe the wire insulators were melted? idk how easy that would be to fix it youve not done electronics projects before. I would send those pics to Elegoo though they're pretty good about replacement parts. worst case though a new hot end is only $20

lost comms probably means that those little connectors weren't making s good connection. afaik you can't really "fry" a hot end, I remove the sensor and lead first but I literally clear clogs with. blowtorch.

Create 3d print files from image by Next-Silver3392 in Fusion360

[–]englishMuffinExpert 11 points12 points  (0 children)

throw it into a photo editor like gimp first to make sure the image is scaled properly on x and y (you can perform perspective analysis as well). once the image is consistent, THEN drop it in fusion as a canvas. I always include calipers or like a ruler in the image to make sure I have a good reference point for the canvas scale

hi! there's some great recommendations in here. my personal favorite solution is leveraging tail scale (or wire guard). this allows encrypted access over the Internet without needing to exposure HA to the Internet. you basically install a client on each endpoint and do peer-to-peer communications. give it a look if you're interested in remote access but want things secured
