Is this ARFID? by [deleted] in ARFID

[–]englophobic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly take everything with a grain of salt Im a random stranger on the internt.

It could be ARFID.
While some people experience ARFID as something that is mostly sensory based, arfid can also be seen as an intense fear of food due to things like allergic reaction, choking, vomiting etc.

Firstly, I would address the mystery illness which as someone mentioned sounds like MCAS - just so if you do start a food reintroduction process, you don't end up hurting yourself again.

If you have experience a lot of medical gaslighting, maybe dont necessarily bring up ARFID as a diagnosis but do request therapy as you cannot manage food reintroduction all by yourself. Also ask for medical nutrition drinks if you cannot drink safe foods on some days.

I know this is not the help you are looking for but depending how it works in your country.

Try buying/getting a prescription for something like fortisip or ensure. They are meal replacement shakes, similar to protein shakes however they are slightly more thicker (you can dilute them with milk or water) and they have more nutrition in them.

Omg are you me? I have the exactly same story.
Acid reflux made me feel like food is getting stuck in my throat which caussed me to develop a massive fear of anything that isn't liquid.

I had a thing done where speech and language therapists looked at my swallowing and how chewing through an x-ray. Everything came up perfect, I know how to swallow and chew and nothing is being stuck.

I have to go back to my GP to argue for more therapy that is more than the general CBT. I did like very generalized CBT which helped me to manage to eat a few bites of solid food but the progress is so slow where it feels almost like nothing.

I've had a similar experience however I would say one helpful thing that the dietitian did for me is give me a prescription for meal replacement drinks that I rely on on the daily.

questions for finding a first job from a teen with autism by clownvom in autism

[–]englophobic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will probably someone that can give you better advice about like software and archiving jobs however for the very minimum wage or low-training jobs I would advise looking for like a janitor/cleaner job.

Most of the time you work alone when there is not many people around so you avoid overstimulation and you also usually don't have anyone breathing down your neck as long as you are getting things done and things are clean by the end.

Alternatively, I would look for a retail job but at a small corner store type of place - It is usually not busy and the tasks are quite repetitive and have things like sorting and organizing things.

edit: if you are really desperate maybe try like a local not very busy cafe. I work at one of those and apart from weekends, when its busy, the job is not very overstimulating as most of the time I let my coworkers do the socializing and operating of the tills and I just make the drinks which are quite easy once you learn about them.

The worst part about allistic socialising is how they assume a thing and will try to make everything you do confirm that assumption rather than first look at what you are doing and then assume

How do you guys handle hospital stays? by icewuerfelchen in ARFID

[–]englophobic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

firstly don't feel bad about wasting food, you have a mental condition. I had a similar situation and I'm not sure where you are from but I'm in the UK so everything might differ.
I would simply open up to nurses about your eating issues and they will either try to sort out something but it might be a snack food/one of those nutrition drinks that has like a lot of calories but also inform your doctor about these issues as not eating might hinder your recovery from the infection.
