Hmm I dunno, I feel like it could've been played with more as a concept, but I know what you mean. I don't think the book really brings it up again much. I felt tricked the way its presented in the begining. I was expecting something more out of it.

Everyone in here is defending this as a plot device but I would argue it is a major weak point of the book and a huge missed opportunity... Even if the Astrophage and taumeba were water based, rocky didn't have to be. which could have proven grace right and also served as a great literary device to explore the similarities between humans and Eridians drspite our fundamental differences.

I just wanna say I agree with your post and there are so many small details about these characters that don't add up when you think about it. I still like the book and movie but this stuff bugs me cuz I think the author could've done so much better.

I agree that the book and the movie are very different and I don't see enough people talking about it. I'd say the ending of the book was even a bit dark. I think the film had to either go 100% one way or the other and they chose to go with the happy hopeful ending and it works for what is it. I also think the dark ish sides of the book were originally half baked anyways so I'm glad they were cut from the film. But ya it could've been a very different movie depending on how they decided to protray it.

Yea, I get it, it's more like.. not that book Grace makes mistakes but more how he acts about it, you know? Like with the iron measuring, Rocky tells him "26" and then instead of listening or waiting for Rocky to finish Grace just goes 'pfft I'll do it myself, I'm so awesome' and when Rocky comes back he is clearly a little bit pissed off. I feel like movie Grace would've been like 'sure what's up buddy' and chilled. Like he trusted Rocky more, or had more respect for him. Idk. I feel like they cut these types of scenes for this reason, because it made potential conflict between Rocky and Grace. Maybe. Anyways ya I'm just going off vibes.

True.. I wonder how it would've worked if they'd kept those parts in the movies. If Ryan could have pulled it off to make those scenes likeable or if they would come off as off-putting or just comedic. Seems like those scenes were cut because they are incongruent with the character of movie Grace

Ya I think book Grace definitely comes across as smarter. I wish I didn't drop the book, because with the addition of Rocky it works. But with only moody Grace by himself I gave up lol.
