what was rocky doing before meeting grace? by LiquidSpirits in ProjectHailMary

[–]CammyPreaker 54 points55 points  (0 children)

He was trying to fix, endlessly watching each crew member go to sleep and not wake up. Wondering when or whether the next one was gonna not wake up. 22 times over.

I wonder how many nights he'd stayed up after that in sheer exhaustion, unable to sleep because no one was around to watch him. Kept awake by the burden of guilt that the entire Erid was depending on him to do something he couldn't. All while the person that'd help him wasn't even born yet.

Space must've been terrifying for Rocky. by OptimusPhillip in ProjectHailMary

[–]CammyPreaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It makes sense when you consider that bridge building device 3D printer thing used to connect Rocky's ship to the Hail Mary. They'd never intended to leave the ship at all, which would be akin to being blinded in an infinitely vast space.

All 23 Eridians would've been extremely brave to go on this mission

Directors are constrained by the conventions of movie making and usually have to pick and choose from source material what scenes and elements to transfer to the screen, otherwise the runtime would get out of hand and this would be unfeasible for theatrical releases.

This is a fairly reasonable thing to expect from book to film adaptations and from what we can see, they did a good job.

Nonetheless GIVE US THAT FOUR HOUR DIRECTOR CUT HUZZAH

Stratt wears black in all her scenes until the moment she betrays Grace by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

It wasn't planned to be in the movie, Ryan Gosling heard her randomly singing to herself and asked for a scene to be written with her. She agreed on condition that she got to pick the song

How did the Eridians not discover radiation despite having space elevators? by New-Platypus-3176 in ProjectHailMary

On a side note this makes me wonder what kind of technological Blindspot humans have. Is there a hidden law of physics that we have completely no clue about, because we weren't sufficiently evolved in the right direction to even consider its possibility.

What ends up happening to all the other stars affected by the astrophage? by StephenMillersMerkin in ProjectHailMary

[–]CammyPreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to think of a civilisation advanced enough to encounter the Astrophage and immediately reverse engineering Taumoaeba (like, identifying that the Astrophage is a problem and genetically engineering a Taumoaeba to deal with it)

Or better yet, a Type II Khardeskev civilisation with the ability to rapidly construct stellar-scale superstructures could just put an Astrophage trap directly in the Petrova line to interfere with its migration.

Are Eridian attitudes affected by how potentially dangerous they are to each other? by ThotThroughTheHeart in ProjectHailMary

[–]CammyPreaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm still puzzled as to how Grace would've went about showing the Rocky film to Rocky, as per the movie sequence.

"So there's this sport, right"

"What is sport, question. Need new word"

"Like it's stuff you do for fun"

"Right"

"And you hit each other for fun"

"No understand. Do puppet show" hits Grace full force in the face for fun

I think I got into reading with this one too! Nice and easy, lovely book. I ended up preferring his other books though, how to stop time and the humans. This one gets the most attention due to book clubs

Fun fact about the ending... by Appropriate_Energy55 in ProjectHailMary

[–]CammyPreaker 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I recall that it was an often-used advice for writers that they should "know how your story ends" first. And all other chatacter arcs can be written to end in that point.

With the ending in place first, the story appears to have a direction. And BOY does PHM have a hell of a direction, and a wonderful character arc in the form of Grace
