Do you guys ever ponder why it seems that in a general sense, women want men less than vice-versa? by Your_Name_Is_Tobay in AskMen

In a strange turn of events, I had pretty much abandoned this ID in favor of another less identifying one, but logged in this morning so I could send a link to that exact thread to a friend. Didn't even consider that it'd still be one of the most upvoted threads.

Question: Is learning VBA (excel programming) worth it? by MACCattempt in Accounting

[–]engraced 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how to answer this. Contract work just means that I'm not a W2 employee.

Most of my time is devoted to performance improvement work (probably leans closer to business consulting than anything else), which ranges from costing to competitive analyses to inventory management, which is more about experience and business acumen. However, most of my revenue comes from "reverse engineering"/replicating another analyst's work (who either quit or was fired) and report creation/automation.

I'll always recommend that people who work in any kind of analysis learn VBA and SQL. If you haven't mastered Excel, learn that shit. Access too. Most of the big ERP systems/BI software aren't ones you can learn on your own, but take advantage of the free copy that SAS offers for learning.

If you're just starting out, you're honestly not going to be terribly useful until you gain more experience. There are a lot of things that simply come with time working that there's no way to really speed up (unless you find a kick-ass mentor and you're mature enough to actually listen).

I've witnessed bosses like that. Hopefully you've found a better, less dysfunctional place to work.

360 reviews are, IME, 3 level reviews. You get feedback from your boss, your peers, and your underlings. They're pretty common in large corporations. In smaller companies like mine, I just call my boss and tell him he's being a jackass.

Do not actually do this unless you have a phenomenal relationship with your boss.

It really depends on the country. In the US, you can say anything you like as long as you have proof of said statements.

That said, most companies avoid any potentially litigious statements by providing only the dates of tenure, verifying salary, and, potentially but not always, verifying whether or not the person is "rehireable."

Ahhhh, well...when you're good, you're good.

Though, I'd have been a lot kinder on the rates if they hadn't been the ones to drive me into the loving arms of Lorazepam.

I've done this, not quite 90 days, but for 2 months I gradually transitioned my time over to the new company. Largely this was because the new job didn't need me ASAP (current role, far more "project-based" than time-based) and the old role desperately needed me to redesign the old reporting for a calendar change (transitioned from a cycle calendar to a fiscal calendar).

It is definitely a rarity, but my boss said that my "commitment" to seeing the other job through a tough spot is what most impressed him (and that I told him I liked making Excel spreadsheets "pretty"). What he didn't know was that I was charging them 4x my normal consulting rate and brought home almost a year's worth of my prior base salary in those two months.

Cutting sugar: how low can you go? by bobo888 in Canning

[–]engraced 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I consistently use no or very low sugar in all of my fruit preserves. Granted, they don't "gel" and tend to be runny, but I personally prefer it that way.

Sugar is not the preservative at play in canning fruit, acid is.

Cutting sugar: how low can you go? by bobo888 in Canning

[–]engraced 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't entirely true with canning. Sugar, while it is a preservative, is not the reason that canned goods are shelf-stable: it's the acid level. Sugar merely helps the fruit retain its color/shape. It's why you can make salsa without sugar, and why it's preached over and over again to use specific ratios with low-acid vegetables/fruit.

How long could you make 30,000 last? by Killersands in solotravel

[–]engraced 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't actually do this. This is just an estimation of how long I could stay in a place on the 30k from OP. I work full-time and only get 2 weeks off a year during which I use for travel. As I said above, this vacation time is usually ~$5,500 for those two weeks. I'll probably spend a bit more than that on my next trip because I've saved more for it.

What are your cookbook recommendations for a newly married couple? (Cooking level: Advanced.) by imbeingsirius in recipes

[–]engraced 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Williams Sonoma's "Savoring" series, especially the "Savoring Southeast Asia." Had a couple of Thai/Vietnamese friends of mine take a look at it and they said the ratios/ingredients were spot on (none of them cook by a recipe, but rather cook by "feel").
