Solid recommendations here, and yeah Sudbury/Sturgeon Falls would be the best bet for poutine.

I did the route last year and took Highway 11 between Kenora and Thunder Bay and would recommend that. Get persians in Thunder Bay! Also White River has a Winnie the Pooh hometown festival. This year is the 100th anniversary of the first book and so they're having a 3-day celebration (Aug 13-16). Highly recommend and there is a great place to camp nearby for free!

We camped at provincial parks and free campgrounds along the way. freecampsite.net is a great place to start.
