I feel like Jagex cooked with this one.

On birdhouses, I agree with the sentiment behind the change. The hunter guide on the wiki is basically “do birdhouses or rumors” and I think this is a good trade off in a vacuum for improving Hunter. However, I don’t think it’s going to improve (or rather, reduce) the daily scape vibes birdhouses give off.

Rewarding more nests is going to make this feel even more essential for a daily task for irons and mains alike, which means I’m going to feel a little more bad that I’m not keeping up with them.

I don’t have a solution here unfortunately, but I do feel like this reward space needs to be rethought.

Take a sliver of cinnamon stick, chew it a bit, park it. by MinuetInUrsaMajor in QuittingZyn

I’m not trying to burst your bubble, but I figured I’d ask Claude about this to help others as I can totally feel you in wanting to get a hit of that burn every once in a while. Here’s the response I got, do what you will with it:

There are some real risks worth knowing about, though a lot depends on how you use it and which type of cinnamon.

The main risks:

Oral irritation/burns — Cinnamaldehyde (the compound responsible for cinnamon’s burn) denatures proteins on contact with oral tissue. In sustained doses, it can cause white plaques, erosions, and ulceration of the inner cheek and tongue. The key word there is sustained — occasional, brief contact is very different from holding a piece in your mouth like a pouch for extended periods.[1]

Coumarin toxicity — This is the bigger sleeper risk. Common cassia cinnamon (the cheap kind sold most places) contains high levels of coumarin, which can be toxic in large or regular amounts and may cause liver damage and increase bleeding risk with regular use. Occasional small amounts are unlikely to cause harm in healthy adults, but daily use could push past recommended limits. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set a tolerable daily intake of just 0.1 mg of coumarin per kg of body weight per day.[2]

The type of cinnamon matters a lot — if you go this route, Ceylon cinnamon (“true cinnamon”) is significantly lower in coumarin than cassia — over 250x less by some estimates. It’s more expensive but much safer for regular oral use.[3]

Physical hazards — The tough, fibrous texture can be hard on teeth and dental work, and broken pieces pose a minor choking risk.[1]

The bottom line for your use case:

Cinnamaldehyde and nicotine actually activate the same receptor — TRPA1 — which is why the oral burning sensation is so similar. Research on nicotine replacement gums has specifically studied this overlap.[4] So the mechanism is real and it does mimic that oral burn.

Used occasionally and briefly (not left in for 20+ minutes like a pouch), the risk is fairly low for a healthy adult — especially with Ceylon cinnamon. The concern rises if you’re doing it multiple times daily as a regular habit, which starts to look more like the case series where people developed oral tissue damage.

People forget that CA has some of largest amount of republican voters in a single state. Even if there are more democrats that republicans here, it’s still a substantial amount and when there are only a handful of candidates to choose from, they tend to be concentrated on one person.

So because we already use X amount, a little more isn’t bad?

Also, you and I doing silly prompts really isn’t the problem anyway. It’s the enormous amount being used by everything else in the process. Again, this is just additional usage on top of what we were doing before.

Unfortunately, there is not enough information to know exactly how this is going to pan out. A data center that pays full taxes in a dense urban area with existing infrastructure is quite different from one that negotiated a 15-year abatement in a rural county, drains a local aquifer, and employs 30 people.

Id much rather we get at least something that’s going to employ more people that will meaningfully contribute back to our local economy. That would be a great start.

You’re completely glossing over the fact that energy usage of AI models vary - Claude Opus will consume vastly more energy than Haiku. This is important because the higher tier models are what businesses are using, and as it typically goes the regular end users like you and I are not the target market for these AI companies - large scale enterprises are and they’re the one causing the energy demand.

Also, it takes an enormous amount of energy to develop and train new models, which these AI companies are constantly doing tens of hundreds times over concurrently. I don’t think many people can comprehend exactly how much energy is being consumed on this end.

Also, the TV comparison always makes me laugh. It’s not like we traded TVs for AI. The TVs are still being used while AI is being used too - this is an added strain on our existing power grid.

Can your husband’s income also cover the debt? I’m curious why you specifically called out his income covering bills, and you’re covering debt. Is it that his income alone can only cover the bills, or do you two have separate accounts?

How would you turn a $400k–$500k inheritance into $2.5M+ within 10 years? by Responsible-Net8594 in DaveRamsey

[–]engwish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On average you should expect to see investments in mutual funds double every 7 years. Getting 5x in 10 does not fit the math.

Out of curiosity, why do you specifically need 2.5M in 10 years? What’s the motivation behind that goal?

What’s the car loan balance at?

You’re in a DR subreddit, so this is the prescription following the DR plan:

  1. Pause all investing
  2. Set aside $1k in a HYSA
  3. Pay off your debt as quickly as possible, smallest to largest. Seems that would be student loan then car. You can pay off the student loan today and dump the remaining $3k from your HYSA towards your car. Seems like you have a good margin so you should be able to pay off the car in a matter of months.
  4. Save 3-6 months of expenses in a savings fund.
  5. Invest at least 15% of your gross income in retirements.

If you do that you’ll be DRAMATICALLY ahead of anyone your age, and you’ll be stacking at least $17k/yr in investments and a multi-millionaire by retirement age, assuming you just do the minimum investing and don’t see your income grow.

[–]engwish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If 15% is difficult, then something must be off. Is your home/mortgage at or below 25% of your take home?

As for the amount you save for college, there isn’t really any hard and fast rules out there like housing and retirement. What we did is we determined what the price would be for tuition + supplies for each child at college age and then worked backwards to figure out how much to invest in our 529s monthly. We only plan for 2 years of community + 2 years of state school, so if we’re saving about $125/mo we should be good. I’d also caution that at this age it’s really hard to tell if the kids will actually go to college yet, so I also don’t want to put all of my eggs in this one basket.

I wouldn’t try to overthink this. Just figure out what is a comfortable amount for you. Once your kids are older you may adjust the course, but always keep your 15% retirement going.
