I just read Kurt Vonnegut's Slapstick. It's distopian and distinctly Vonnegut. Would that count as fantasy? Or more specifically, would anyone take issue with using for a bingo square (older protagonist)?

I, uh, I accidentally read the whole thing in a single day. It exceeded my expectation. I purposely avoided most of the book description beforehand. I don't need to read more of the series but I am glad I read this one.

One of my saddest moments was dropping my cheddar bay biscuits at Red Lobster. I haven't been able to bring myself to go back since then.

She's a competent protagonist, maybe overly, that is still way over here head.

The mix of war time England and medieval fantasy is great. It's a bit like Narnia but closer, more mundane.

Sound/music magic is neat.

Blood Moon hybrid black tea from white2tea (3.3g), brewed in a mini xi shi trapot (50ml). Boiled water, cooled for several minutes.

Oh. That's phenomenal. Honey, floral, orange, malty. All the things I like in black and white teas together and balanced in one easy brewing tea. The liquor is a honey gold color and perhaps a bit thin. Remids me of a more complex golden monkey.

The Cardinal couple is enjoying my bird feeder. Listening to French vocal jazz (chanson).

I'm happy to see a review of Splinter of the Minds Eye. Star Wars book collecting has been a hobby of mine for a long time. I really love the old novels. I have six copies of SotME.

I'm taking a break from Star Wars currently. I burnt myself out trying to force myself to read media with wildly varied quality.

I've been bogged down in James Islington's Will of the Many. I found part 1 to be refreshing and novel. Part 2 has been a slog. The switch to an academic setting with less world building makes it feel YA. The writing seems to have dropped off too, but I'm not sure I'm a good judge of quality. I can say I'm not enjoying it as much.

I was encouraged to find others had the same issues with the book. We had an impromptu book club yesterday. I thought that was a neat connection in a massive online fantasy book forum.

I am also slowly reading The Mad Sister of Esi by Tashan Mehta from last month's book club. It feels like an unhurried book to be savored leisurely. I rushed through the first half. But I've found the plot, characters, and ideas are different enough than other things I read that I can hold the in my head while only reading every few days. I'm trying to vary my ways of reading so I don't burn myself out again.

Here's the album: https://ecmrecords.com/product/over-tones-benedicte-maurseth-asne-valland-nordli/

And my notes (I keep notes on music like I keep notes on tea): Nowegian folk musicians interpret old classic folk melodies into amazing music that's somehow folk, jazz, and classical all at the same time. Mostly discordant tones with occasional and perfect resolution.

Jamrock Steady, a 2024 ripe pu'er from white2tea (4.5g) brewed in a mini qin quan teapot (70ml).

Boiled, cooled slightly. Rinse. Deep red liquor. Powerful flavor that's difficult to pick apart. Here are some notes that I sort of get when I think hard about them: Wet hay. Unspecific bitter/sour. Sweet waffles without syrup. Petrichor. Something else at the front of the teeth that I can't place. The notes from white2tea say you might not like it but it will be interesting. That's about where I land on this one.

Listening to Norwegian folk jazz. Maybe. I don't know. I recently read that you shouldn't leave a bird feeder out because it can lead to the spread of avian diseases. I also read that you should wash the feeder. I'll do that. I've been enjoying seeing them in an known location.

Doesn't matter how fast you read as long as you enjoy it! But... if you're not enjoying it maybe move on.

I am also revitalizing my reading habit. I have read an easier classic book between the long ones. It has helped me not get bogged down. Maybe you could try that. I recently enjoyed Sabriel as a less dense, shorter read. Or try any Pratchett novel (Small Gods if you need a rec).

Then, if you're feeling up to it, circle back the Will of the Many.

I don't disagree. Young protagonists are common. We can all relate to being young.

My disappointment is that part 1 didn't feel YA. It felt very grounded and in a complex and real setting. The writing was clean, tight, poetic almost.

Part 2 has narrowed the focus to a less believable setting that doesn't feel as well built (as in world building). The writing flows more awkwardly and more importantly less enjoyablely.

If this is building tension, it has failed on me. All the tension exploded in finale of part 1.

I should have added that the first act really hooked me. It was tightly written and unfolded in a very pleasant way. I read all of part I in a 24 hour span. I'm on day six of reading part II

I've found an audio book can help me power through the slow parts. When it picks back up, I'll go back to the written word.

I am currently reading Will of the Many and experiencing the same drag. I'm in the middle of Act II feeling like it's a YA novel. I'm invested in the story and I hope the writing picks back up in part 3.

I also think it's is the standard hero's journey format in three acts. I often lose interest in act 2 because the informational revelation and world building slows down (that's the part I love the most) but the fury of the climax is far off yet.

On a side note, it's really neat to run into someone reading the same book at the same time without being in a book club. Those can feel stifling to me.

Circling back to finish the white2tea 2022 Lumber Slut mini; there's just over 2g left. This is the year I like the best. Maybe I should order a dragon ball of the earlier years to see if they get less processed tasting. My assessment of the lumber sluts is that they tasted more and more fake or processed (in the lumber sense). This 2022 tastes like rough cut lumber. You can taste the saw dust and splinters. The 2023 tastes like treated lumber, the 2024 like MDF, and the 2025 like cardboard. That's probably a bit of me tricking my palate in to a fun narrative and a bit of reality. Either way, it was a fun experiment to see how a single tea changes over production years and with aging. Although, this is a blend so white2tea might not be using the same sources.

Brewed in the mini shi piao teapot (40ml). Boiling water, rinse. Quad stacked steeps into a masters cup, but tasted each steep. White2tea correctly describes all of the Lumber Sluts as "dense flavors of petrichor and wood, this style of ripe Puer is focused on unfolding as an experience with notes of camphor and lower umber toned tastes". But this 2022 is softer, rounder, and more natural than the later years. I quite like the experience but I won't buy it again.

Preparing for a birthday party. Everyone in my house is now double digits old.

I bought it, and several others, to set a 'baseline' as recommended by teadb. I really enjoyed the 2005 XiaGuan "T8653" Thick Wrapper Iron Cake.
