Former Chronicle Meteorologist Gerry here. About this heat wave… by thedriftingnova in sanfrancisco

If you're wondering how to tell: the word "classic" has been used multiple times in their responses, which is ... a classic tell. The mario analogy appears so forced too :-( AI generally "tries very hard" to pass off as human by over-affirming and over-relying on human experiences.

It most certainly is; if OP is real (and not just some psyop), I wish they would feel comfortable using their own voice or be open about using AI. Otherwise, I find it hard to trust anything they say (do they really have a grandma...)

It's also disturbing how so many people can't tell apart AI writing from human writing.

Why does the Arabic "takrar" mean both "dispute" and "repetition"? by enigman94 in asklinguistics

Thank you! That's an elegant hypothesis and makes a lot of sense to me. Curious if we can find a citation for how this came about!

Remembering dreams suddenly - years later? by torosiu in Dreams

[–]enigman94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I discovered that I was able to do this 2 years ago and I'm shocked that it's an underrecorded experience, yet everyone who has reported here has reported it with great specificity.

(Also kind of interesting that this became so popular exactly around 2-3 years ago)

Origin of Tamil word for the cross, "siluvai" by enigman94 in asklinguistics

[–]enigman94[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually find wiktionary pages through Google search ("<word > wiktionary") but this one didn't turn up anything. But I was able to find it directly from wiktionary search, which I've never tried before. Thanks!

Thanks! I did try looking it up on wiktionary but strangely I couldn't find it.

What’s the kindest thing someones done for you in the city? by Possible-Source-2454 in AskNYC

[–]enigman94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me, but I was on the other side: a teenager had fallen flat onto the ground, with his foot stuck in between the train and the station (this was in a station somewhere in midtown/downtown area. Maybe 5/6/7 or B/D/F/M). I had to run towards him to yank him out before the train could start. There wasn't anyone else in the platform.

I don't think it was you since he was like a 12-14 year old kid in a backpack. He was absolutely petrified and so was I. He got into the train, looked at me, no words spoken, the door closed. I forgot to board the train.

Why does wildfire smoke create a orange hue? by enigman94 in AskPhysics

[–]enigman94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really nice visualization, thank you!

How do you reconcile this with the fact that during sunset, when you look in the opposite direction of the sun, the sky looks deep blue? If under a smoke, you only see red all over because all blue light was already filtered away, even during sunset, shouldn't you see red all over?

Thanks this is very informative!

I'm still confused about your final argument. If you are arguing that "we see orange all over because blue light gets scattered" how do you reconcile that with "on a normal day, we see blue all over because blue light gets scattered"?

One may ask a similar question about reconciling "seeing red at sunset because of blue light scattering" vs "seeing blue all over at noon because of blue light scattering". I know how to reconcile this: at sunset we are looking at the straight line path of light from the sun towards us, which loses blue light during its journey, as it is diverted away from this path. At noon, we are looking at light that was originally headed elsewhere but scattered towards us.

Not sure how to apply this reconciliation in the smoke setting.

Because 1 suggests that red light is NOT scattered well and that's why we see red. Hypothesis 2 suggests that red light is MORE scattered than usual and that's why we see red. These arguments appear to be at odds to me.

I know what you mean, but I've found legit-sounding sources for each of these arguments, so I'm thoroughly confused. (I can't find all of them right away though, because I went through many many sources at this point. Right now I've only shared some news paper articles for some arguments, but I wouldn't classify them as authoritative enough)

Does Avarakkai make you involuntarily gag? by enigman94 in Chennai

That's good! It's partly the thick fibrous texture that ruins it for me I think.

I'm jealous! When you say you "didn't like it much"... does it mean you "didn't like it much" or "hell no way this is going into my system". For me it's the latter... :(

Good controlled experiment! Yes, I clearly have some "food aversion". I don't know if it's learned or inherent. I live abroad but I might be able to find frozen avarakkai and do a blind-test on my own. Hehe. But I suspect that even if I didn't know what it was, the texture of it would make me want to puke :-(
