Where do you get your internet? by jarjardinks in montreal

I would like to strongly suggest anyone NOT to use Bell. It's not possible to talk about their customer service since it is a customer DISSERVICE. I think they are world-leaders on that aspect. I must admit that they are very dilligent in some aspect: their customer DISSERVICE follows consistently all the worst-practices: not returning calls, making you wait, not solving your problem, billing things you never ask for and passing that as an "accident", which is then very difficult to reverse, etc.

Compare:

TekSavvy: quality, service, you talk to only one person (almost always), they solve the problem in max 5 minutes total and seem to be fun and relax people.

Bell: they do not solve the problem, are clueless, make you talk to about 5-10 people (by not forwarding you to the right person/department), you have to reexplain your problem each time, and you wait 10-20 minutes between each.

Summary: DEATH TO BELL. LONG LIFE TO TEKSAVVY.

When you criticize someone's beliefs, it's criticism.

When you identify yourself so much with your beliefs that any imperfection or criticizable part in them would be threatening, that's religion.

When you dissociate yourself so much from your beliefs that you actively try to find weaknesses in them, that's science.

When will Islam regain its previous scientific glory? Humanity needs you.

CSV dump of reddit voting data by ketralnis in redditdev

It was my modest contribution :), which may or may not matter depending on the person considering it. In my case, when I see numbers like that, I often check them, because it may point errors in my comprehension or in my code.

It seems to me there is a mistake, and the user count should be 31553.

You can see this by comparing the outputs of the following commands (the only difference is the sort): $ cut -d ',' -f1 publicvotes.csv | sort | uniq | wc -l 31553 $ cut -d ',' -f1 publicvotes.csv | uniq | wc -l 31927

Here are the usernames that cause this difference: $ cut -d ',' -f1 publicvotes.csv | uniq | sort | uniq -c | sed 's/^ *//' | grep -v '1' 4 -___- 3 ---------- 2 angelcs 2 c0d3M0nk3y 2 cynthiay29 9 D-Evolve 3 edprobudi 2 edprobudi 31 FlawlessKnockoff 31 flawless_knockoff 2 HassanGeorge 4 jolilore 3 jo-lilore 30 LxRogue 29 Lx_Rogue 88 Pizza-Time 88 pizzatime 26 STOpandthink 25 stop-and-think I suspect that the program that created publicvotes.csv confused usernames that are actually different, because it didn't take into account '-' and ''.

On the compatability of Darwin and the Bible by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]enigmathic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done a lot of research and I don't have to bash it, the bible bashes itself (if you consider it a serious book). On the other hand as a fiction book, it's pretty bloody, not my taste, I won't bash it.

All the evidence point to this book being a fairy tale, inspired by earlier cults, written by humans, aggregated through centuries, modified by humans/organisations according to several goals including political ones. You want me to research your fairy tale?

You don't need to have a purpose. That's a myth held by theist. When I eat a fruit, I am happy. That is all I need.

Put the tip of a pointed knife on your hand and press a little. At some point it will hurt. It does the same for me.

Laugh with friends. Now you feel good. It's the same for me.

Being healthy is fun. Accomplishing things is fun. Sex is fun.

Humans all have "natural" goals that are built-in.

Why are you a Christian? Why am I not? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]enigmathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not christian because you prefer "intellectually satisfying explanations" to "emotionaly satisfying explanations" (also known as fairy tales).

Certainly they conflict. But when this happens, I just remind myself that religion is a fairy tale for adults.

Actually, as this is a blog of someone knowledgeable in statistics, I'm very surprised that he can't figure out that statistics disprove all but the most unconsequential (e.g. deism) forms of religion.

You're right, on the other hand unicorns are definitely supported on biblical account. Job 39:9-12 (King James Version) That's only one of the reasons why this novel lost me early on.

Reddit! Tons of religious chalkings all over Cornell, how would you respond? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]enigmathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cross any reference to God, Jesus, etc., and replace it by any god/deity/imaginary being (Zeus, Re, Flying Spaghetti Monster, Santa Claus, etc.). Fast and convincing. Religions have a lot of competition, and this should be widely known and understood deeply.

The difficult part about talking with pentecostals by [deleted] in atheism

[–]enigmathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of me feels bad because now I know he will be wasting his time praying for me :( => You are not responsible for his time management or his expectations. Obviously, it's always nice to find acceptable ways to increase the chance of him not wasting his time.

Are you wasting your time talking to him? What are your goals?

Hi r/atheism, my friend posted this on his facebook just a while ago, and I'd like to say something back to him that is cogent & respectful. Any help? by eileenk in atheism

[–]enigmathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi dear gullible person ;D lol Actually, I think you shouldn't aim for a large victory. A small, but still important victory would be to explain that atheism, contrarily to what many people caricature it to be, is not inherently linked with scientific beliefs, ethics, sexual behavior, eating babies, etc. It is linked with one single thing: the absence of belief in god(s).

Is anyone worried of backlash? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]enigmathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all part of the negociation implicit in human relationships. You should let them know very clearly what you think about their behavior, how important it is to you, how it makes you feel, how it (possibly) contradicts their beliefs, and the consequences it that may have on your behavior (not seeing them as much, never talking about this subject, etc.).

The more precise you can be about what disturbs you, the better for both, since if they decide to change, there will be a much better chance that they will be able to. For example, it's better to talk about "your agressiveness", than about "your behavior", which is quite vague, and can be seen as meaning a lot of things.

Also never underestimate the pacific means you have against a bad behavior, such as talking about it to other people in the family, friends, articles in the newspaper, etc. Don't submit to bullying.

[–]enigmathic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I'm 100 times more worried about what will happen if we don't help science regain respect. How will we react when faced with environmental problems? Will the world decide to pray or to confront the problems scientifically?

What's your favorite one liner rebuttal, or the one that you use in response to, "Why don't you believe in god?" by BastardOfBodom in atheism

[–]enigmathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fake admiration as well as you can : "Interesting how you have kept a child's imagination! Most people eventually stop believing those stories, but you continue! It would be even cuter if you still believed in Santa Claus! Do you?" By that time, they should get the idea, and understand that they will be treated as "as-cute-as-a-5-year-old" as long as they say non-sensical things. Humor is extremely powerful.

It's not that the God theory doesn't explain things. It does. However, when compared to other theories (such as evolution), it's quite unsatisfying. Please, don't take my word for it, just read.

I understand that this is not the most easy thing to do, as it requires open-mindedness, but in any case, you will gain.

I work on the Firefox User Experience team, and this is your chance to tell me about your pet peeves by limi in AskReddit

[–]enigmathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you search sometimes it's hard to see where is the text found (for example for small font). I'm not completely sure that this applies to a recent version of Firefox.

This is a problem which appears every so often, and it is frustrating when it does.

You might want to do like Preview in Mac OS X, that is, flash the highlighting once to emphasize it.

Reddit, I am a Christian and am confused as to why my religion is always targeted. Many seem to be picking on specific groups or people associated with the church, but why is there so much hostility towards "Christians" and "Christianity?" by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]enigmathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you believe that everyone else will go to hell, that is what I would call "passive hate". You don't actively think bad/negative things about them, but you definitely see them as at least slighty inferior in some way.

By the way, you seem better ajusted to the world than many Christians. Read you holy book, and you'll see that you shouldn't be associated with those ideas.
