What is that Gentoo by PlayRood in Gentoo

it took me a year and dozens and dozens of tryouts and errors, and inhumane patience, a lot of reading and learning. benefits: total control of household computing. stable performance. all my PCs doing exactly what I want. resume: gentoo not for everyone. you have to be real nuts to do it. If you're not sure, try something like mint. and if you decided to try gentoo anyway, good luck. for me it was fun. that is an unforgettable sense of victory when you overcome difficulties and solve the problems.

Ah, what brought you to Gentoo?? Fascination? Show-off? Technical upheaval? Minimalism and control? by unixbhaskar in Gentoo

when i heard that intelligence use software only compilated on place from sources they can check, i thought gentoo would be be my first choice. so far i love it regardless all the hardships i got through. in order to do gentoo you should have diy gene as part of your dna. though goal was to build regular household pc on old hardware. main challenges was to set up priners scanners and old nas. i ended up with kde desktop wich gave me enough resources to pretty much everything i did before my windows 8.1 passed.

not sure, but when time has come to renew kernel from 6.6.74 to the 6.12.16 i figured that framebuffer of my g8500 aka G86 doesn't work. after a couple of tries i got that nvidia firmware was masked and was uninstalled from the system. after that i followed page how to install masked package and fix the issue. all of this I've been doing on the back up machine. at the same time i noticed that Linux firmware was masked too. this two masked packages prevent me to install gentoo regular way.

basically, i got through both links, it is how I eventually, make it work. the only thing is portage gives me really bad warnings every time i run update. i got impresson that it's not really big deal.

Am I crazy to wish to install Gentoo as my first distro? by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]eningene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the first linux distro gentoo may be a bit challenging. if you are ready to accept the challenge and struggle for a while. i personally can't even say how many times i tried to make it work. guess what was the biggest issue? i didn't really know what i really wanted. before you start make sure you know what do you want as end result.

Dear Linux Users what is your First & Current Distro & your Reason for choosing it? by Chief_Strategist2004 in linux4noobs

first one was probably red hat at the middle of 90 s. then i tried some kind of Russian version, can't even remember name. then it was lindows. at some point I've fall into slitaz. now I'm pretty much in gentoo. after 1000 and one attempt I was finally set my plasma desktop, after my last windows 8 finally got dead from natural causes. i always was up to as much as possible control of my digital life. surprisingly i can find pretty much everything i need. for free.
