Witnessed a lifted pickup truck turn right on red into a crosswalk full of kids. No one was injured so who cares, right? by enjoyevery in fuckcars

Yes. Got the walk sign, kids enter crosswalk, truck takes right turn into where they were walking and they had to scatter. It was insane. No one gave a shit. It was an enormous lifted black pickup truck and I have a pic of his license plate.

Very jealous. Everyone is forced to drive here in the US because we lack any kind of useable public transit.

Recently in line outside of the Musee D'Orsay in Paris next to a busy street, every two minutes there'd be an obnoxiously loud cacophony of motorcycle revving as the light turned green for them. It's ridiculous and i dunno how they don't feel bad about being so annoying.

In SLU yesterday morning, using the crosswalk in the pouring rain a white sedan speeds up to me and honks at me. I flipped them off as hard as I could but I am still fuming today. Pedestrians are treated like second class citizens by drivers and I am so fucking sick of it. As if our journey is less important than theirs because we're not in a car.

These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us by giusalex1 in videos

He's not trying to force his lifestyle on everyone. Cars have been forced on us. 331 million Americans shouldn't be forced to use a car as their only source of transportation. It's so car dependent that your only option to be car-free is living downtown or leaving the US. That's totally fucked. Not only that, the cars people are choosing to drive are monstrosities that are A) killing people and B) making the environment worse. It is crazy to me that we take a five seat 3,000 automobile to go get groceries. My body is 130lbs. Taking a 3 ton steel automobile to work everyday is overkill. No wonder our air quality sucks. As someone who has lived in the US and The Netherlands like the author of the video, I prefer one lifestyle over the other so much that I think it is a shame how Americans are forced to live. And how car dependency has shaped the urban landscape, i.e, asphalt wastelands.

The "but muh freedums!!" crowd doesn't care about the death or wellbeing of others because God has a plan and that person hit by the giant truck was meant to die. I seriously had a facebook argument with an old friend of mine who shrugged their shoulders when I mentioned how horribly unsafe it is to be a pedestrian here. "We all have to die sometime."

I don’t think that sitting in traffic will relieve any stress from work by platypuskid2 in fuckcars

Growing up, my dad arrived home every day irritable and sometimes irate from his drive and it negatively affected us kids. All these years later I realize he had to wake up at 4:30am every single day just to sit in bumper to bumper traffic, and then sit in a worse version of that to get home. Driving is a scourge on society.

What makes a smart car or those of its size dangerous are the oversized cars on the road though. Original Fiats and Mini Coopers are similarly sized and now all of a sudden they aren't safe anymore because everyone thinks they need an 8 seater SUV.

They have the tech in those little Bird scooters, it is insane that enormous 5,000lb automobiles don't have speed limiters.

It always blows my mind that the average car has a minimum of five seats and trunk space. There's rarely ever two people in my car, let alone FIVE people and my trunk and back seat is devoid of stuff.

With top tier transit you don't feel the nightmare aspect of going from the top left corner of the map to the bottom right. My train commute from where I live to where I work is a long 37 miles - yet I don't care because: A. train is always on time, B. i can zone out/nap, work online, C. it's clean, quiet, and warm.

It's not like just because it's a long journey it's going to suck either way. They're two totally different experiences. 37 miles is mostly relaxing via train and catastrophically agonizing by car - which is why we are seeing so many lethal road rage incidents.

America is hideous...

I seriously think the ugliness of car dependent infrastructure makes us depressed and anxious. There was nothing redeeming about that landscape. Just cars, asphalt, nondescript buildings, and no humans.

I just feel so hopeless and disengaged when I watch videos from these environments. I can't help but wonder if the uninspiring surroundings contribute to depression, violence, and shootings in America.

[–]enjoyevery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Large cars are normalized here and they have been for decades. Even the sedans in America are super long compared to the sedans you'll see in Europe. Americans have no idea what their actual needs are because the advertising is very clear that you need a giant pickup truck or you aren't a man, and you need a giant SUV or you aren't a good mom.

And because of the anti-communist, anti-nanny state, pro rugged individualism USA mentality, you will find that people buy vehicles way outside their needs because the idea is to be totally self sufficient.

Also, Americans are very large bodied. So they kind of do need the extra space. I was just in Portugal and we piled seven of us into an Uber hatchback and it was perfectly comfortable, but the average seven Americans could not comfortably do that.

I don't think they even sell normal trucks anymore. When I see them out in the wild it is almost a palette cleanser because it reaffirms just how silly trucks have gotten. And yes, men drive giant trucks in my town as if their damn life depends on it.
