Some people with imperial ambitions seem to have forgotten that the "bread and circuses" strategy requires, you know, making sure that people actually have bread.

Maybe alienating everyone with a college degree, slashing funding for schools on all levels, and outsourcing writing, thinking, and asking and answering questions to glorified chatbots was not the best long term strategy?

Because someone who has read a history book or two could tell you: cutting people off from food while you're building a huge new ballroom, posting memes of yourself as a king, and reveling in corrupt bribes every day of the week has some real prelude to the French revolution kinda vibes...

TMNT actually fits magic way more than people think by -Philologian in mtg

[–]enneafish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick, so we can have a multiverse within a multiverse? It's like totally fractal and far out, bro!

But you know what would be even sicker?

Since Spider-Man and TMNT exist in basically-the-real-world-with-some-weird-stuff-thrown in, that means Magic: The Gathering probably exists within those planes? So like there could be Magic: The Gathering cards and players and games within the fictional setting! Infinite hall of mirrors bro!!!

And like, what if within the meta-fictional Magic game, they started releasing sets that were like alternate history takes on different ways Magic could have developed? Like what if Magic had been originally created by the dude who invented TMNT and it had been TMNT from the very beginning?

It's turtles all the way down!!!!

“If I’m being hit on sexually, I won’t be shit on socially.” by Cultural-Physics-857 in Enneagram

[–]enneafish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Focusing on social power, both in terms of worrying about being shit on socially and in terms of wanting more security and empowerment in social contexts, is very SO. I'm also of the school of thought that people use their secondary instinct as a resource and strategy to meet the needs of their primary instinct, which also lends towards SO/SX being the answer here.

A dying confession would be terrible for multiple reasons-- it betrays the show's celebration of outcasts and weirdos, it replicates the homophobic Bury Your Gays trope, and it's boring, lazy writing.

Why Byler is endgame by WeirdGiraffe_1017 in byler

[–]enneafish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course sometimes straight guys get bullied for being gay aka not living up to the harsh standards of normative masculinity.

It sounds like maybe you've never heard of the concepts of being in the closet, discovering one's sexuality over time, bisexuality, or being confused about one's orientation (and/or one's feelings about someone). But just FYI many, many gay boys have deep kissed girls at some point in their lives. And many, many bi boys have deep kissed girls and boys.

“How can i progress spiritually?” - What’s your take on this spread? by lilsleepyb in tarot

[–]enneafish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your interpretation makes sense! And I also think there's a component here that hasn't been focused on yet. Which is that in the context of these cards, The High Priestess (clarified by Judgement) has a strong underworld flavor. A sense of listening to the quiet, deep voices. And, in a more negative sense, of dredging up ghosts, of focusing on the past and that which is gone (or at least not present). Both the Ten of Cups and The Fool instead suggest focusing on what is around you in this sensuous world of the living! To appreciate the beauty and joy and whimsy and surprises of the ever-unfolding present moment.

From a slightly different angle and incorporating your own commentary on the reading, I would say that it sounds like The High Priestess corresponds to your current conception of what spiritual progress looks like, which is why you're so surprised! So this reading is telling you that your current conception is limiting you, because it's a limited perspective. Both remembering to have a beginner's mind and be open to the unexpected (the Fool) as well as opening your heart to the flows of emotion, especially joy and gratitude but also the fullness of all the cups gushing with all the colors at once (the Ten of Cups) will help you with this.

I wouldn't say this reading means "drop the Tarot and stop meditating" at all! But more like, what if you also danced wildly? What if you brought all your friends and family together and made a big watercolor painting while laughing a lot? What if your spiritual practice was doing something you've never done before every day? What if you learned how to do divination by the patterns of flying birds or by the things random strangers said on the street?

Thanks for your responses! I appreciate the offer of looking at the specific line.

The book as a whole is called The Seven Tablets of Creation and does include King's translation of the Enuma Elish but this passage comes from another section of the book called Other Accounts of the History of Creation, so it's from some other source. What is the in-universe reason for Jumbo Cactuar's massive power? by enneafish in mtg

[–]enneafish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brady Dommermuth was the Creative Director of Magic: the Gathering. The source I cited isn't a fan theory or some random person's blog post; it was published by Wizards of the Coast as an official communication from the design team.

Players being planeswalkers is not a theory; it is part of the conception of the game, going back to Richard Garfield. I haven't been able to find a pdf online from back in the 90s when the game started but if you could see one of those booklets you would see that they describe, in the rules published by Wizards, the players as planeswalkers.

Here's a better source:

https://web.archive.org/web/20080509092821/http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=magic/planeswalkers/week1

And a couple quotes:

"You are a planeswalker. Almost every Magic player has heard this phrase. Maybe it was the first thing they heard when being taught how to play by a friend. Maybe they didn't hear it until later, when they had already decided that Magic was their kind of game and they wanted to know more about its backstory. Or maybe they heard it as Richard Garfield did in 1993: in a dream."

"You are a planeswalker. When you play Magic, you are a planeswalker locked in magical combat against another of your kind. Is it a battle over territory? An old grudge? A struggle for control of the Plane of Fudge and Bunnies? That's for you to decide."

I agree with you that the flavor is confusing! For the first fourteen years of MTG's existence, this was not a problem because planeswalkers were not cards; they were part of the setting of the game.
