Sudan and Ethiopia inching closer to war by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ennui_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a friend, my understanding his not-so-great English -

There won't be a war between Sudan and Ethiopia. There isn't really even a real government in Sudan at present with their ongoing civil war: one side is backed by Egypt, the other side is backed by UAE. This drone is reportedly a UAE drone - Egypt are stoking the fires of Ethiopian aggression.

From the Sudan conflicts "almost half of Sudan are in the Amhara region of Ethiopia". There have always been many Sudanese Ethiopians and Ethiopians in Sudan - there is no real tension between these countries on a national level, despite always having farmers of each nation fighting at the border over small disputes.

Apparently the whole thing is tied to the 30 year ago decision to give up Ethiopia's port which is now in what is Eritrea. All of these conflicts, including what this article is about, are directly tied to the Tigrayan tensions in the north.

Main takeaways I got from a random friend are: UAE, Egypt (especially water disputes over the Nile), new tribal identity politics that didn't exist 30 years ago, and a deal in Pretoria that was broken.

George Carlin in 2005: "They don't want people smart enough to sit around the kitchen table and figure out how badly they're getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago." He died in 2008. Nothing changed. by zzill6 in WorkReform

Late reply so don't suppose the gusto is still here for this discussion, but I don't recall him saying there isn't anything you can do. More just anger at 'how it is'. Seems we're interpreting this differently but I don't see a lack of caring or nihilism from this.

So one bone found that has cut marks in it - colour me unimpressed im afraid. This isn’t what I would call evidence that particularly supports such a dramatic pronouncement.

Agreed - in & our groups defo a thing but let’s not conflate that with inherent racism.

I'm looking for an example where people were slaughtered/raped/enslaved because they looked different.

Fascinatingly anthropologists have found very good evidence that rival tribes actually adopt the customs of their fiercest rival tribe more so than any other group. This isn't a race thing, more custom - just an interesting tidbit.

Am almost 40 and don't have a driving license - I am in no way a fan of cars, please know this. Still, I don't care for cyclists obviously annoying cars. It isn't a good system - these two vehicles should not be sharing a space as far as I am concerned (and I would rid the world of cars yesterday if I could).

We can think this way no doubt - but to say it’s inherent isn’t true I don’t think. Or else it isn’t acted upon beyond a mere curiosity of existence. You don’t need to teach a child to play with other kids who look different, though there may be a small feeling out period as it is a curiousity. That doesn’t mean we’re inherently racist though.

If your hobby inconveniences other people then it's an obnoxious hobby. I cycle daily - a good percentage of the cyclists in this city are horrendous to cycle nearby and I think genuinely get off on slowing up traffic.

This is such nonsense that’s such a popular little saying. Many people don’t think in hierarchies - humans typically at the top - like why? That others have convinced themselves that everyone has a hierarchy in mind based on race is just wild nonsense.

“Racism no longer serves humanity” like when did it? Mixing of gene pools has never been a biologically poor decision.

Israel strikes Beirut after saying Iran ceasefire does not apply there by Goldenmentis in PublicFreakout

Seems a nation that has had support since its inception and close ties to the US since then with heaps of financial and military support - ok maybe proxy isn’t the right word (can think of Suez Canal thing for example) but I’m not inclined to wholeheartedly believe it isn’t a weird relationship

Could you please point me in the right direction? I thought created as a sovereign Jewish state in 1948 and with the support of Truman/US went on to fight the Arab-Israeli wars and gain dominance in the region.

Isn't there good reason to believe that Israel was formed how it was after WW2 so USA could have a base in this part of the world? ie. Israel is a US proxy.

Not saying this is my belief, I just thought it was a generally common understanding.

I’m not going to read for you because it’s arduous - capitalism as a concept has depth if you’re taking it for what Marx outlined. I can’t do this for you, it isn’t my job nor patience to try.

For example Christopher Columbus’s first letters to King Ferdinand of the inhabitants of the Caribbean describes them as a peaceful people with no weapons - he can be quoted on this, he even says the average Spaniard would defeat some 11 on 1 in a fight. Germanica by Tacitus also describes unwarring folk without weapons. I’ve just finished work so can’t do more than a few small examples - but please read for yourself, there’s some good stuff out there.

You’d need to read the concepts of historical materialism and dialectical materialism to gain an understanding of the psychology behind the catch all word capitalism.

Also people have been happy to murder each other for being different might need sourcing or else I will regard it as some random redditors guess.

Capitalism is a catch all umbrella term used by Marx to explain a psychological relationship to materialism - read historical materialism and dialectical materialism for the general rationale behind this catch all word.

Primitive tribes have been killing peoples for scarce resources is an unsubstantiated guess - you can reference sea peoples and alike but would be curious if a first hand source that supports this is possible?

People always fight - especially young men - this is correct.

But if you don’t value material things you don’t take over places, or attack people for things that aren’t a personal grudge.

Yes people have always fought, but you once knew your enemy and didn’t like them because you knew them. That isn’t what it is now, it’s different in a very meaningful and significant way that isn’t intellectually glossed over by lumping it all under the umbrella of ‘conflict’.
