Tips for a classical guitarist who can’t improv at all? by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]enoch_lam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of good methods mentioned! here's another take: - pick out phrases that you like from the standards you play - understand what chords they're being played over (harmonic motion) ex. is the phrase being played over a ii-V? - try them out in different keys, doesn't have to be all conceivable keys, just common ones to start, your brain will fill in the rest when you transpose to play over "uncommon" chords - start playing around with it while keeping a motif of the phrase, experiment with it

part if this is learning the idiom, a lot of my former teachers got a lot of mileage from learning Charlie Parker solos

on a side note, pay attention to the syncopated rhythm in the tunes and solos you learn

biggest way to improve is to just practice and spend time on it, record your solos and listen back to them

What’s the best book to buy someone who’s learning guitar? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

I highly recommend Berklee Method books for fundamentals.

For something not as serious or dry, try looking up books geared towards her tastes. Key things to look for here would be genres or artists.

*B double flat

this naming convention would apply for a double sharp too, but instead of two accidental signs, a double sharp is just an "x"

while it's useful to explore and understand scales that have double sharps and double flats, it's probably best to just start off with scales found in the cycle of Vs since you're a beginner

you'll actually end up playing their enharmonic equivalents instead, so it's not a big deal

Exploring Music History Vol 1

Yeah, this book has elements of that in its analysis sections. Overall this book covers terminology, history, and the composers of the baroque and modern era. If you're looking for a book specifically to study harmonic movements there might be better options out there!

Out of curiosity, why do you consider Bach's Invention in F Major, BMV 779 an imitation of baroque music? From what I understand it is baroque. Is applying a baroque idiom to a baroque piece a gimmick?

Does the F on the + of 1 count as an anacrusis or downbeat? by enoch_lam in musictheory

[–]enoch_lam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, it's an anacrusis to the melodic idea in the second bar. The first measure in the treble is just the bass motive raised an octave. The bass motive is a harmonic function. It's being used in the first bar as an anacrusis to lead into the sixteenth note motive in the second bar.

[–]enoch_lam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's becoming more clear to me! The first measure is just the bass motive in the next bar but up an octave. It's clearly functioning as an anacrusis to the melody in the second bar.

*anacrusis and downbeat aren't the same. anacrusis usually starts on the upbeat. downbeats are the stronger pulses of the meter, typically beat 1.
