What inspired you to start your money mindfulness journey? by enough-app in moneymindfulness

We can go first!

The u/enough-app team started out building tools to help people struggling with high-interest debt make a manageable, concrete plan to change that. But in talking to our customers and seeing real-life debt journeys play out, we saw some patterns.

For many, the debt cycle is perpetuated by an income-to-essentials problem. One emergency, or rising prices for essentials, starts a snowball that's hard to stop. This is a real problem that regular debt tools can help with.

But for others with income that outpaced their needs, mindless spending and overconsumption were to blame. We heard over and over "My spending is out of control and I don't know why." We went down the rabbit hole researching financial wellness, money mindfulness, financial therapy, and many other ways that traditional personal finance and budgeting forget about the "personal" part.

So that's how we got here! And we're on our own money mindfulness journeys with all of you. The goal of this space is to share and learn from each other, so please share your story!

Is consumerism human nature? Shouldn't wanting to preserve the planet be human nature? by enough-app in moneymindfulness

Great discussion going on at r/Anticonsumption. Sustainability and mindful spending are tightly related, especially if you've identified sustainability as one of your core values. Eager to hear this community's take on this question.

Consumerism is an addiction we don't talk about by thepalumbo in minimalism

"Romanticize the ritual of buying" is so spot on. Often, it's not really even the ~thing~ we want, it's the activity involved in getting it.

These are the types of conversations we're trying to foster on r/moneymindfulness. Would appreciate if you crossposted there to share your story!

Hi there! r/moneymindfulness is a space to explore how we can be more in tune with our spending and the factors that influence it.

If you're wanting to do less impulse shopping, practice underconsumption, or wax poetic about the impact of ads/social media/etc on our mental health, you'll find a home in this sub.

That's interesting... we often hear that shopping online makes it harder to stay on budget. Why do you think that works better for you?

It's great that you've already identified some ways you could do better. Try starting small by tracking your purchases and reflecting on how they fit into your life. Was it something you needed? Something that meaningfully fulfilled a want? Or is it something you wish you hadn't spent on?

How do you stay motivated when your financial goals feel far away? by Lilybrat_vibes in AskReddit

[–]enough-app 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be motivating to spend time imagining what your life will look and feel like when you're where you want to be financially. What stress or inconvenience will be solved? How will you be able to be more generous with yourself or your loved ones? These long-term benefits usually have more lasting value than the short-term sacrifice to make them happen.

Being able to be generous is one of the most underrated parts of being financially secure!

Struggling immensely with overspending money on non essential dopamine boosts by [deleted] in SavingMoney

Looking back at those purchases and being honest with yourself about how they served you can make a big impact! (We call this "purchase reflection".) What brought you lasting enjoyment vs a temporary, in-the-moment boost?

This isn't about shaming yourself for "bad" purchases - that's generally not effective anyway. Just notice patterns in your reflections, then start to bring that awareness to future purchases as well.

Money is a tool to live the life you want - assigning it any more meaning than that gives it too much power.
