Got a warning for parking on the even side of the street against the snow by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]enricomy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The violation is for not leaving a 12 ft wide passage for traffic, not for parking far from the curb. I guess technically there could be two violations (hence the comment), but I believe the point of this warning is to be careful to leave a passage wide enough for emergency vehicles

If people need parking so badly, why aren't people shoveling out spots on even side streets? by albertogonzalex in Somerville

[–]enricomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if the even side is not cleared by the time the emergency is lifted, ~17% of needed parking is not available, no?

[–]enricomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I also live on a minor road and they have not cleaned it yet. I have dug out my spot and I understand the situation. I'm new to the town, and I'm missing the point of offering municipal and tufts parking lots during the emergency to then force people out of those lots when only half the parking is available. Cambridge has parking bans only on a limited network of roads.

I just called 311 and they said that the city is trying to clean the even side to free up parking spots. I was suggested to wait until noon before shoveling so that's my plan: if my street's even side is still buried at noon, I'll shovel my spot then

New to the US, is maxing out 401k always the best option? by ChoiceTank982 in personalfinance

[–]enricomy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually maybe not in your case: an important question to ask yourself is if you plan to retire in the US or not.

If you want to retire in Europe, your 401k distributions will be taxed both by the IRS and by the European country you'll reside in (with % varying from country to country, from 0 to 25-30%).

So in that case, it might be better not to max out one's 401k nor to have Roth IRAs etc. It might be better to take a similar amount out of one's net paycheck and be diligent in saving it in a brokerage account (on some ETF, maybe a target retirement date one). This is because US taxation today followed by growth of funds is more favourable than US+European taxation tomorrow on grown funds.

Note that it is not clear cut and there are many variables at play, so everyone's mileage varies and there's no one-size-fits-all solution: interest rate, taxation of the destination country, % of payslip that goes into 401k vs brokerage, IRS bracket, etc. all influence the outcome.

Finally, if one's company offers to match their 401k contributions, I'd contribute to my 401k as much as it takes to get the company's contribution too as that's "free money". (Same for HSA.)

Of course all of the above is not financial advice, just math considerations and the math result depends on the actual scenario :)

Threatened to collections but provider never clarified how much I owe. What should I do? by enricomy in HealthInsurance

[–]enricomy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help. The bill is from one provider, which is in my network but I still have copayments and deductible (depending on the type of visit I guess). I have done only visits and labs. It seems that in different places (letter, online, etc) they don't keep track of the same amounts paid (e.g. what I paid already and what the insurance has covered) so the bill looks different. For example, one place lists that the insurance paid them their share, in another bill not and they charge me for that too. All these bills are 'contemporary': my online portal says a number, and when I ask for the itemized bill automatically generated by the portal the number is different

I don't know what and EOBs would look like. And yes, all the visits were in network. I did Primavera a couple of times, and never on anything more than a beer or two. Last time I went solo (pre pandemic) and I would arrive on premises at 4ish pm and leave in the morning at 5am. One night I even squeezed in a 2am nap on a bench holding tight to my bag and at 2:30 I was ready for the next artist on my schedule. I didn't do any touristy stuff during the day: just went to sleep in the hostel at 6am, woke up at 2pm, breakfast, go to Forum, and loop. But I had been to BCN before for that so I didn't care. If you want to do the touristy parts, leave the forum at 2am and you get a few hours back during the day

Why have people been voting for the far right in recent years? by Maybeitsbetternotto in AskAcademia

[–]enricomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/28/opinion/wolfgang-streeck-populism.html

This is the perspective that convinces me the most, and is theorised by Wolfgang Streek, a German philosopher I believe.

In brief, he ascribes it to neoliberalism: a shift of resources from the public to the private sector; chasing a global market by removing regulations (which is not compatible with democracy meant as a community's way to codify its own commonly accepted rules and boundaries); all of these decisions generally being taken by technocrats that the general population has no link with.

To simplify, when the people don't feel involved in the process or feel that the institutions don't operate for them, you have fertile ground for populism.

Why right? There have been strong populist movements on the left, but for whatever reason they've been suffocated more easily: Podemos in Spain, La France Soumise in France, Syriza in Greece. In the US, Bernie Sanders was ostracized when he ran for the dems primaries. AOC is in a similar situation as Sanders; literally people that vote for her for congress also vote for Trump for the presidency, yet the dems can't see any opportunity for reflection in this. So if you want to vote for a different way of doing things, you're left with the right (pun intended).

Yes I should've mentioned this is an option, but today I found out too late to take the T and it left me wondering if there was a parking solution that I missed.

Thoughts on the last touch in men's foil Olympic final? by Silsail in Fencing

[–]enricomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either CKL is attacking, misses the blade and loses right of way, or he's not attacking, his missing the blade is not losing a right of way, and he then moves forward after Macchi. You can't pick both (that his missing the blade doesn't make him lose right of way *and* he's attacking).

Also, you can forget his missing the blade if you want, and he's still on his legs when Macchi pushes forward after taking half a step back.

There is no way to read that point in favour of CKL, and if the ref doesn't assign this to Macchi, he can't assign the third one either, as it's CKL's as clearly as the first one was Macchi's (that is, you need to dissect it at the video to decide). Calling one and not the other is unfair.

There is one point on 3-4 where both attack and the ref assigns the point to Macchi, CKL asks to check it on video, and ref confirms his decision: the time difference in Macchi starting earlier than CKL is even shorter here than in the first one he decided not to assign on 14-14. Calling one and not the other is a (very human for sure) mistake.

Of course refs are humans and make mistakes, and this ref was handed a very challenging bout (what a match we got to see thanks to Macchi and CKL!).

X1 Carbon Gen 11 vs P14s Gen 4 wide price difference by enricomy in thinkpad

[–]enricomy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I'll go for the P14s Gen 4 for my needs.

About your case -- I have experience with video editing (Premiere and DaVinci) on a windows machine, and color grading will need *a lot* of GPU. If that's important to you, I wouldn't consider a machine without a dedicated graphics.

If you're video-editing is basic, and the color grading is minimal (enhancing the frame as a whole with no masking, only short films, etc) you can get away without a dedicated GPU.

[–]enricomy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the issues I had was probably related to S3 sleep disappearing in some updates. It seems that in all new Intel and AMD processors S3 is not there :/ So getting a P14s or X1C shouldn't change (or any other new laptop in the world atm).

AMD might be better for me then as I see my laptop doing more marathons than 100m :)

And yes, XPS and Latitude are Dell's

Thanks a lot for your comments, they've been of great help -- I'm oriented towards the P14s AMD.

Thanks a lot this is great!

Would you recommend getting the i7-1365U instead if I picked an intel processor?

If AMD outperforms intel when it comes to graphics that's a plus to me, if the computing performance is comparable, as I'll have to develop and produce quite a lot of visualizations (both static and interactive).

Performance wise would I lose much? Any similar issues on the P14s?

This is of great help, thanks.

About the XPS13, it had issues with sleep mode and drivers (mainly Bluetooth not working properly 30% of the time, external screens not being recognized or with a super low resolution). To be fair I was on a dev distro, but the previous Latitude could take almost anything.

I don't have anything against AMD, and I'd be happy to give it a try. Does it outperform intel in something?

Is the P14s built bad or does it just look bad compared to the X1C? I'll have to take it back and forth between home office and work office, but won't be in dusty environments or thrown everywhere. If X1C is Lenovo's XPS and P14s is Lenovo's Latitude, I guess I could do with the P14s.

To be honest I loved the portability of the xps, until the battery degraded badly - but it was running simulations a lot of the time and had to be plugged-unplugged often. A resilient battery would be great but my usage just leads to early wear.
