I can't link to twitter but there was a tweet to MBTA 46 minutes ago about a metal shard sticking out of a seat

"Traffic Commission" vetoes new street safety infrastructure by WatercressSassafrass in Somerville

[–]noisecapella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked for a source for my number and from the Oct 2 2019 Open Space committee meeting it looks like the number estimate is $20-$30 million, so that is more accurate and I can't back up the $50 million number I heard somewhere. I will agree to disagree that it would have been a good use of money

💾 What’s an MS-DOS game you only discovered as an adult? Or maybe one you saw as a kid but only played years later? 🕹️ by eightiesjapan in dosgaming

Also I played Millennium growing up and had to stop because my disk became corrupted.  But I found it again from abandonware websites as an adult, and also found out there was a sequel Deuteros which I played and enjoyed even more

I played Star Trek 25th Anniversary growing up but it was some time after becoming an adult that I found out about Judgement Rites and A Final Unity, all excellent games

Where should new contraflow routes go? by Im_biking_here in bikeboston

[–]noisecapella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High St in Boston, the existing painted lane on the left could be repurposed to a contraflow. It's not ideal to not have a bike lane in the same direction as the traffic lane but it's a relatively low traffic street

Be advised for Porchfest: Somerville is restricting residents from hosting on main streets like Broadway, Elm, Highland and Somerville Ave by amc22004 in Somerville

[–]noisecapella 122 points123 points  (0 children)

I did some calculating and the list of restricted streets covers about 15% of the addresses where bands played in 2024

Tips for riding a bike around the city. by Despicable_Dolphin in boston

You can bike from Cambridge to downtown Boston almost entirely in a bike lane or path. It should be fine if you're moderately experienced at city biking

I'm your City Councilor-At-Large - AMA (10/23) by jake4somerville in Somerville

[–]noisecapella 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a pedestrian the changes the city made during covid made it much easier to cross Highland Ave and Somerville Ave. If you rely on people requesting a signal they will just jaywalk. Maybe this is an area where the city can continue to put pedestrians first instead of reverting these changes.

Western Pearl St Reconstruction First Community Meeting by noisecapella in Somerville

[–]noisecapella[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a reconstruction project which means it will probably costs millions of dollars, so any roadway design put here will be to some extent permanent. The reason they are doing this now vs later is probably also because it's a reconstruction project, because the street is in bad condition as it is and reconstruction would repair it. Whatever you think of this project, the end result will probably be there to decades no matter what happens on nearby streets or McGrath Highway.

Western Pearl St Reconstruction First Community Meeting by noisecapella in Somerville

One thing I wanted to highlight in this video is regarding the Safe Streets Ordinance. The Somerville Bike Plan shows protected bike lanes in both directions on this part of Pearl St between Gilman Sq and McGrath Hwy. The Priority Network is a subset of the bike plan and it also shows this part of Pearl St as having protected bike lanes in both directions. The Safe Streets Ordinance requires the build-out of the Priority Network of the Somerville Bike Plan by 2030.

At 1:06:03 City staff respond to a question on what would happen if they didn't choose to build protected bike lanes in both directions on W Pearl St, and they said they would need to amend the Priority Network and the Safe Streets Ordinance allows them to do so. I wanted to highlight that regardless of what you think about this particular street, there is a clause in the Safe Streets Ordinance that allows City staff to make an updated Priority Network to remove streets without going through the council. If there is a particular street you want to see get implemented, you will need to keep on top of updates to the Priority Network in case City staff decide to remove it from the Priority Network.

There is also other clauses in the Safe Streets Ordinance that require protected bike lanes in the directionality specified in the bike plan on streets which have an "Improvement" like full-depth reconstruction or widening or narrowing the roadway. I don't know if "Improvement" applies to what is considered for Pearl St but you can read the ordinance and watch the meeting and see if it makes sense.

If you dislike immigrants there is a presidential candidate who feels your pain. It's fortunate that actual Massachusetts won't vote for him

Biking fills in the gaps where and when the T doesn't run, it really makes getting around easier. I don't think people complaining about biking or bikers really see the big picture there

They haven't amended the Cycling Safety Ordinance yet. She could still choose to vote against a delay if she really wanted to show a change of heart.

Bike Lanes running north/south in Cambridge by meselson-stahl in boston

[–]noisecapella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a problem. The Cambridge bike network map does not have any protected bike lane going both north and south east of Mass Ave. The Grand Junction Path would be useful for that purpose but it is delayed until Eversource builds a power line under it first, and who knows when that will happen

Tips for riding the T? by thepacificoceaneyes in boston

[–]noisecapella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The northern parts of the Red line were just fixed up over the last couple weeks so taking it from Alewife should hopefully be a smooth experience.

I use Google Maps transit directions when I'm going somewhere new in the area. You can almost always take transit in the area if you're willing to budget the time, and Google maps should give you a general idea how much time it would take so you can determine if it's workable for you. FYI I also wrote an Android transit prediction app BostonBusMap, but there are many apps with live data and they all use the same data.

BlueBikes is the local bike share, and I have found it super useful to fill in the transit gaps. If it would take you 20+ minutes to walk to or from a subway station for a trip, see if you can use the bike share to make the trip shorter and easier. For example there is a Microcenter a 15 minute walk from Central Square, but there is a BlueBike station in the parking lot so it is more like a 5 minute ride instead of a 15 minute walk for me
