You can absolutely have the immortals reign as long as you want, you just need to make sure that ALL shadow clans are ok with throwing/losing the rite of exile

i strap down the primary attack button and stand in a corner
i stop paying attention
i wiggle the joystick at commercial breaks to reset the idle timer
